An interview with Jim Shooter about Valiant - from 1991!
You may have seen the partial interview that Vinnie Bartilucci had
with Jim Shooter in January 1992 that is posted on the website:
http://www.valiantcomics.com/valiant/vinnie1.asp
...but that's not the whole story. Tim Stroup from Cold Cut Distributions
only had that partial text of the Bartilucci interview, so we haven't been
able to read the whole thing...
...until now...
The FULL interview of Jim Shooter is available for download.
(The file is 12MB, PDF format.)
Vinnie Bartilucci was kind enough to scan the interview in its entirety,
and to provide a copy for ValiantFans.com. In addition to having the full interview,
we also know that the actual date of the interview was December 12, 1991.
(Thanks to a Don Perlin sketch which was drawn the same day...)
THANKS VINNIE!
ENJOY!

Just got through reading it. It was a really good interview! It gave a lot of insight into the development of the early VALIANT characters and stories.
I liked how he took the ideas from the original Gold Key characters and really thought them through to make them what they were in the VALIANT books. The comparison between Magnus and Rai was really cool (and something I had never thought of before).
Excellent!

Thanks Greg and Vinnie. Been waiting many years for that.
The interview was always one of the best ones Shooter gave. Not only was it one of the few given during his time at Valiant (and not after) it's one of the most complete covering every single book and character. You really get to see why each book was approached the way it was and what made each concept work. It's really "How to do comic right 101" especially Valiant Comics (and shockingly in a year, almost every bit of it was thrown out the window at Valiant). It was also nice to see more how Shadowman was created and to finally get the other side to the "No gays in the Marvel Universe" story.

- I would buy anything about these characters, sadly.

Great read, thanks Greg. I always love reading about the early days, even though it's a bit bittersweet. I think it's interesting that there were going to be possibly more Gold Key revivals and reprints. I think Turok would have been a much different (and better) book if Shooter had still been around.

Yeah, I'm sure Turok would have been better. You're right, bittersweet is the word.Ryan wrote:Great read, thanks Greg. I always love reading about the early days, even though it's a bit bittersweet.
