Multiples....Why or Why Not?
The "VALIANT Values" thread made me wonder....who here buys multiples of the same issue?
Why do you do it? Investment? Market manipulation
? Upgrading, but never parted with the lower grade issue? You're a retailer and that's what you have to do?
For those that don't, why don't you? No interest? No space? You only need a reader?
I generally only have one of most books, I occassionally pick up an extra copy of a book here and there in hopes of flipping. I do have 3 copies of My Greatest Adventure #80, but I've been upgrading and just never moved out the older copies. Sometimes I buy an extra for my brother or a friend that I think they would enjoy and just never remember to give the extra to them when I see them. I've also bought multiples by mistake...I didn't take a book off my want list for whatever reason and just keep picking it up.
I'm not knocking anyone for buying multiples. Hey-if it makes you happy and you're not hurting anyone, go for it! I am just curious about the reasoning behind it. Why keep 10 copies of the same book? Or 20? Or 50? Or 100? Space limitaions would eventually be an issue (pardon the pun), right?

Same here. Can't pass up a deal...Brother J wrote:simple, especially with VALIANT books. How many times do you see very underpriced VALIANTs? Pretty often as there are still a lot of people out there who think they are worthless. I'm more than happy to relieve someone of their VALIANT burden if they want to dump them for next to nothing.

I don't buy multiples of any comic because I prefer to spend my comic budget on issues I don't have. However, if I happened upon a bunch of pre-unity issues gathering dust in a bargain bin, I would probably purchase them simply to rescue them from oblivion. This temptation would only be contradicted by the possibilty that someone who had never read a VALIANT comic would give them a shot and become hooked.

"Multiples?" Don't you mean "hoarding?"
Guilty as charged, but I have pared down to 10 each (or so) of my beloved pre-Unity Rai's... and most other multiples I have have come because they were a good deal, if not downright cheap.

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

Why do I have a CGC 9.8 Superman #423? I'm not a huge Superman fan. I love Alan Moore's writing, but I can't read that particular copy of the book. I don't think that fandom will suddenly say, "HOLY COW! This book is AMAZING! It's second only to Action #1 in importance in comic history!" It won't suddenly shoot up in value. But I didn't want to be that guy that didn't have one.
There are some other great reasons here too, buff's desire to get new material struck a chord with me. Why have 25 copies of Cap #25, if I can have 1 copy of that and one copy each of Shazam, Batman, Detective, Hulk, Conan, Goon, Planetary....etc. That idea was in my head when I started this thread, butI failed to express it.
I have a hard time passing up a deal too, I have some duplicates that I bought simply because I couldn't pass up a deal. The flip side (pardon the pun again) is that I try to pass that deal on to another collector either selling it for little or no profit or just giving it away to someone that will enjoy it.
Ditto on that. I think it has something to do with the fact certain Valiant comics were once worth a lot of money. If I can grab them for a few bucks, I feel like I've increased the overall value of my collection. At one time my intent was to trade my extras for books I need, but that never worked out. I end up wanting to keep them.chainnball wrote:I'm a hoarder, it's an addiction

Greg,
The answer to your question is that stocks are designed / meant to be sold by the company, and resold by the person that bought it, and maybe even repurchased by the company that issued it (usually at a different price).
Comics are meant to be sold by a comapny to someone and read. The company then doesnt deal with having to repurchase them back. If they underestimate the demand, they could do a reprint, but thats it.
I just get them to read. I try to keep them looking as good as I can so they will last longer.

Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.

Right, so comics are more limited that stocks, they're generally cheaper, putz wrote:Greg,

they include content that "means something to me" (entertainment, nostalgia, investment)
and on top of all that, other people might feel the same way I do.
Sounds like having a stack of some particular comic that you enjoy is a better option
than having a stack of stock certificates that don't have any sentimental value.

sometimes it's unavoidable...especially when e-baying...you are looking for one or two particular issues and they happen to be buried in a run of commons, etc...
plus if you happen across something that you know is WAYYY underpriced at a shop...you snag it!

Why waste time learning, when ignorance is instantaneous?

I buy multiples to flip every now and then, like the Black Panther #25 variant cover, Aspen was selling them at Wondercon for $10, average eBay price at the time was $30, so I bought a stack, put some on eBay, got my investment back, and still have more to sell for pure profit.
I buy multiples of Valiant books too, cuz it is cool to go through a box and see a ton of cool comics you like. Irrationally fun.
