Back When I Was A Kid...

Post by Dr. Solar »

I loved comic books. I was a huge X-Men and Wolverine fan.

Then I heard about this "Unity" thing that was coming out one summer. It sounded cool, so I picked up a couple issues, and a couple issues of some of the comics that came right before it...

and I was hooked. I mowed the lawn and trimmed the bushes about a dozen times in the next couple weeks to earn enough money to buy all of the Unity chapters. I spent a lot of money buying back issues of Solar, and a few others that I could afford. I heard about these fandangoled "gold books", and I WANTED ONE. I didn't know what to do, so I did what any 12 year old would do. Get *SQUEE*.

I wanted to show that I was a big enough fan to get one of the gold books, so I conned a friend into dressing up like Archer, and I dressed up as Armstrong, and I set up all my Valiant comics on display and took some pictures. Check it out:

The note on the left is what I got in the mail back. Along with an Archer & Armstrong 0 GOLD. It was the pride of my collection, and still is one of the books with the most sentimental value to me.

Back then, I couldn't complete all my pre-Unity runs. I was 12, and couldn't afford $80 for Harbinger 1.

I dropped out of comics in high school, and didn't get back into it till later in college. I started buying a lot of the Valiant back issues, and have a decent collection now. Of the pre-unity books, I am only really missing some of the Harbinger and X-O Manowars.

Anyhow, I registered for this site a long time ago, but just checked it out again recently. I met one of you at Wondercon, you were a vendor and I got a couple of the Magnus issues I needed, and a nice Unity 1 Gold. Thanks.

I am looking to eventually complete my Valiant collection, and start getting a lot more high grade early Valiants in my collection.

Cheers!

Sean

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

Nah, he was an Image fan. All in to Spawn and Youngblood and all that crap.

Actually, it would have been really cool if they did send him one. I remember I was over at his house after school one day, and my mom called his house to tell me there was a big envelope from Valiant comics or Voyager communications or something. We hopped on our bikes and raced over to my house. He was hoping there would be two of them in there.

At least we didn't try to share it like Bart and Milhouse (and Martin) with Radioactive Man #1.

That's a terrible thing to say!

I keed, I keed. There's a strong, well-rooted underground of Image fans here. They are like the seedy underbelly of the boards. Cobra Commander is one of them.

Nice story, and welcome aboard.

I got an A&A Gold when I wrote Valiant a letter saying I thought the gold books were a bad idea.
