Decent Ultraverse Find?
As I stated before, I've been slowly compiling an Ultraverse Universe. I came across these today. They were what I consider to be a decent deal. Any thoughts from the other Ultraverse collectors?
The two comic sized books with Hardcase have a serial number at the top and appear to be some kind of Ultravese Handbook. They have wraparound covers.
Then there is a Rune Ashcan #1 and a Wrath Ashcan #1.
Finally I landed a Hardcase Ashcan that has "motor city comic con special edition" printed at the top and under the Malibu logo it is noted that this ashcan was limited to 5,000 copies.

Ultraverse
Do you have a want list posted , because I have a ton of Ultravese duplicates that I would trade you if you have anything you are looking to trade that I either need or don't have
I would do book for book trade wise.

Re: Ultraverse
I'll do that when I have time to get to it, sounds like a plan. Regardless of that though, what can you tell me about those books I nabbed above?tictuck wrote:Do you have a want list posted , because I have a ton of Ultravese duplicates that I would trade you if you have anything you are looking to trade that I either need or don't haveI would do book for book trade wise.

Probably the toughest one to find in that group would be the Hardcase ashcan. The two other books with Hardcase on the cover is the "Countdown to Ultraverse" book, which isn't always easy to find, but easier than the Motor City ashcan. The Rune/Wrath ashcans you have there are very common, unless the one that has the Wrath side up has the Rune logo in gold on the other side.

Where do you guys manage to find this stuff? Amazing. I don't know whether it is being from the UK but I never seem to come across anything like this. Great looking books guys!depluto wrote:There are two versions of the Countdown book:

I got my 'non-numbered' Ultraverse 'catch' book from Tom Mason, talked with him about it once and it is a true prototype. The ones with the numbering on it were just a gimmick, ya know 'hey it has got a seriel number on it so people will think it is limited' when there is not actual proof that the numbers cooincide with ANY numerical print run.leonmallett wrote:Where do you guys manage to find this stuff? The Hardcase ashan is indeed to hard to find but not as hard as this baby (which I picked up for a buck):

I'd like to see a scan of that.IMJ wrote:Finally I landed a Hardcase Ashcan that has "motor city comic con special edition" printed at the top and under the Malibu logo it is noted that this ashcan was limited to 5,000 copies.

I use this site for my 'Ultraverse and Malibu variant covers reference'
http://217.196.238.182/big-tel/variants ... ulist1.htm
But this does not deal with some of the ashcans that are in question.

I had emailed Big Tel with scan the above book and another variant (Ultraverse) that I had discovered. He didnt update the site or even reply back to me.Chiclo wrote:This is the only Malibu comics I have that I haven't seen too many of:
Big Tel didn't even mention it on that website.
I was suprised as hell when that Bravura Platinum showed up at my door. Very pleased indeed. Or heck, any of the variants that we still turn up to this day. Ultraverse was notorious for printing variant covers for NO reason but I have seen the trend being, that direct edition book may have a newsstand cover variant. (Especially Mailbu's The Protectors)
The site I included above is one I have been using for what seems like forever, I just wish he would update the site with our new finds.

Yeah, I was surprised to get that.
A couple of weeks ago, I was bidding on a bunch of stuff from comicsbymail on eBay and saw he had a Bravura 1/2 for something like 35 or 50 cents. I already had one, but why not? I won the comic, and the scan listed in the auction was the regular variant, but when the box came in, it was the Platinum variant.
That wasn't the only comic in that batch that I bought that was scanned to show a regular variant and when it showed up was a premium variant of some kind. I was really surprised.

Speaking with a few of the Malibu guys from back in the day... they were doing variants with abandon TRYING to make things 'collectible'. So yes, there were many variants made but when the company was bought out, all of the variant books (Ultraverse gold books, platinum Bravuras etc) were given to whomever wanted them (not many took them) and then they were 'burned'... yes burned. So actual 'print runs' mean nothing. Yes 'x amount' were printed but MANY were destroyed. So yeah, people scoff at the Dead Universe collectors at time, especially Malibu/Ultraverse but the existing copies of some of these books are amazingly smaller than you think.
