Stupid LCS Owner
I found this out-of-the-way comic book shop yesterday.
The owner had 20 log boxes of un-sorted stuff that I proceeded to go through...Here's our conversation.....
Owner, "Please don't go through them. I've yet to sort them."
Me, "If there's anything I find that I need out of these boxes, I'll gladly pay Overstreet value."
Owner, "No."
Me, "Please. I may not be back to your store for a few months."
Owner, "No. There maybe books in there that I need or some of my long-time customers might need."
Me, "Oh. OK. That's cool. But how about this, I go through, pull what I need, give them to you to go through.
You take what you need for you and your customers, and whatevers left I'll still buy. Here's my #."
Owner, "No."
Why? WTF?
I was willing to pay top $ right then and there. Who knows...I may have walked out of that store with a long box of comics..
Instead..I go home with nothing but my money
And the owner..Well...No money and 20 boxes he still has to go through.
What does he think? He'll get more for whatever DU *SQUEE* I might find, on ebay or selling to his 'Customers'??
You know what I think? When I go back to his store in 2 months or so, I bet those same 20 boxes will still be sitting there. Just as I left them.

This has happened to me several times, usually these guys will only pay 10cents per book for collections and never even check out what they are buying, especially if they do shows.jedimarley wrote:I found this out-of-the-way comic book shop yesterday.

If the guy is stupid enough not to let you sort out the books for yourself and then give you high prices if he doesn't want to sell what you pull then he's not a very smart businessman.
I am selling "nothing" on ebay-yet.

Re: Stupid LCS Owner
I bet the guy isn't in it for business, he's a collector who thought it would be cool to own a shop. There is a big difference in the two.wrunow wrote: If the guy is stupid enough not to let you sort out the books for yourself and then give you high prices if he doesn't want to sell what you pull then he's not a very smart businessman.
He's probably waiting to see if there are any books in there that HE wants. he could care less what you want.
I've had that same thing happen to me. A shop I went to had a person sorting out about 50 longboxes. I offered to help, free of charge. They said no.

This is a good possibility. Have run into this myself a couple of times. One shop I regularly did business with in the 90's was like this. He had no concern for making a profit with his store as he was doing it strictly for the fun of collecting.tssgery wrote:I bet the guy isn't in it for business, he's a collector who thought it would be cool to own a shop. Of course, the guy Jedi dealt with may well just be an a$$. Time will tell if that is the case.

Was it in Arkansas? If so, who was it and where?Second_Death wrote:This is a good possibility. Have run into this myself a couple of times. Re: Stupid LCS Owner
If this is actually the case there really is nothing wrong with that, there are many shops of different types that are owned by collectors or hobbyists of different things that have no right to be in business except they have personal interest in the items and don't care about making money as their bread gets buttered by someone else, maybe their husband/wife is a doctor, or they inherited money. I guess it only really sucks if you are a competitor and have to make a living competing against him when he's not worrying about paying the bills and is just having fun.tssgery wrote:I bet the guy isn't in it for business, he's a collector who thought it would be cool to own a shop. Why waste time learning, when ignorance is instantaneous?
why is it when I read this story I envision a real unorganized and dirty store? (which I dont know, but you can just picture it) with some guy who looks like he still lives at home with Mom?
Ive seen stores have boxes out that they havent went through yet and they would say "please dont go through those boxes, we havent priced them yet"....but that is usually at shops that actually MOVE books.
Im picturing just all the bad experiences Ive ever had buying comics (28 years now) rolled up into this one bunghole of a dealer. I think I would have said something like "way to treat a potential customer" and just left.

Sounds like he did not want your business.
There was a comic shop owner 1/2 hour from my house like that and he went under right after the big implosion. I do not miss his shop at all.

You should find out what comics he's interested in buying. If you got 'em take 'em to his shop and tell him your're interested in selling.
Have a nice long chat with him about it. And then tell him "You know what, I need to check with my other buyers if they want this or not" and casually stroll out of the shop.
