My VALIANT (all capitals, all the time and all that) story
My story has a couple of beginnings - the initial aborted beginning was through Deathmate (I read way too much Image at the time!), but I didn't jump on the train. I later tried an issue 1 of an Acclaim Shadowman series, but didn't continue. I was reading a few Marvels and more DC's during this latter time. During the former it was DC and Milestone, some Image and Marvel. It never really started for me though.
Forward to 2006 and I was in a LCS that isn't my LCS because I was on the hunt for the missing issue of Power Company to complete my run. I get the feeling that back issue stocks in the UK are not as great as the USA when I read posts on these or other forums, but that is by-the-by. I found the missing issue, bundled with 4 other random comics. For 1 pound. Bargain thought I! Picked up a couple of other bundles at the same price. In one of the bundles was this comic with a really shiny cover, very early 90's style I felt. It was X-O Manowar #0. I thought it was okay, better than expected. Now I had been previously resistant to Valiant for two reasons: 1. the art wasn't like that in the other comics I read at the time (now I get it); 2. Jim Shooter was involved. That last one is important because I held him personally responsible for Secret Wars and it's sequel - and I compared them to Crisis and felt there was no comparison. For all I know he didn't even write SW II, but prejudice is prejudice. I have changed my mind on Shooter BTW, and even though I suspect that I would not like him perosnally (not that I will ever know him personally), I do like that he has been vocal and stood by his principles. But I am digressing.
So I had X-O #0 (costing about 20 pence - 30-40 cents). I bought it about 4 months ago or so and it was okay. I was intrigued. I've been on a dead universe kick in the last couple of years. I've almost completed my Milestone. I'm one issue short of Malibu Genesis (and watching said issue on ebay). I'd started my Ultraverse collection. My Impact line is complete (except for Who's Who). Here was another universe to get my teeth into. I started watching ebay, buying up bundles of Valiants based on economic expediancy - are the prices cheaper than I would pay individually from mail order dealers? So I have picked up bits and pieces, issues from Archer and Armstrong, Eternal Warrior, Second Life of Dr Mirage, Harbinger, HARD Corps, Geomancer, Secret Weapons, some Solar, Ninjak, Shadowman and other sundries. The only complete run I have purchased is Dr Mirage. The rest I'm building up. Strangely I haven't bought any more X-O Manowar, but give me time. And yes I consider myself warned about the last issues of X-O and Magnus.
My collection is posted on the inventories section, and I will continue to update it on a periodic basis. We'll see how the collection is going in the next few years, and who knows, there may even be a resurrection of VALIANT (all capitals, all the time, as Shooter said). Even though I joined the party late, I hope so.

I am kicking myself. I had all three Impact Who's Who issues. I've been trying to downsize my collection, sectioning off what to keep, what to sell, etc. I came across the three Who's Whos and thought "No one will ever want these" and I tossed them on the trash pile...
Sorry dude. But welcome to the boards anyway!

19) VALIANT WILL RETURN.
It'll be a celebration of complete chaos and destruction.
It'll be a glorious time of weeping. The earth will shift on its axis.

Yeah, no "Image" type art for the early Valiant. Glad to see you came around.leonmallett wrote: the art wasn't like that in the other comics I read at the time (now I get it).

Take your time building your collection. Half the fun is the anticipation of the comics in the mail. I went overboard in the past couple of months and purchased a significant amount of back issues too quickly.
The SHOOTER Pre-Unity books are EXCEPTIONALLY good. They are just as good or better than I remember reading 12 years ago.
The problem is that I don't know if I want to read the Valiant "V" Acclaim issues in a couple of months time when I get to the dreaded birthquake.
X-O Manowar is a cool title (until Birthquake) and worth tracking down.

Just received my Valiant Vision Starter Kit in factory sealed bag. My purchases are not really following a set pattern...
I am looking forward to reading my run of Shadowman from about issue 10 through to 40. With all the Valiant I have bought lately I have about 70 more unread issues to go!
Thanks for the welcomes guys.

My first pink!
My first pink variant has arrived - X-O 15! It arrived with Bloodshot 6 and 7 and Solar 23 (my second of those!). I feel a bargain at £3.49 (approximately $6-7 USD I guesstimate) for the 4 books, including postage. I am quietly pleased.
