Re-Reading: Magnus Robot Fighter #12 (1st Turok)
I thought we could do a book a day (that way people can read one every day or catch up on weekends), talk about it on its own, in the context of whats next, in regards to what expectations it creates and vote on how good it is. I don't have to be the one that posts everyday. If I miss a day or if someone wants to take over please do
For voting think of your single favourite comic book (not just VALIANT) as the benchmark - thats a 10 - and grade according to that.
Make sure to mention what you like'd about the book, what you didn't, what you wish they would have done, your favourite panels, lines of dialogue, little bits of trivia etc.

What a great issue. Magnus is put into a similar situation to Steel Nation except this time he can't stop the slaughter of war (though he does try). A great use of Noel and Toruk...and Magnus fights dinosaurs!!! How cool is that?
I loved the way the languages were dealt with. No magic translators. Not even your typical brackets to "translate". It seemed more natural this way.
I love the irony of the ending. Noel trapped in a mechanical dinosaur. Classic.
The insert was great too. The rebellion on Phobos could've been a storyline in itself but here they masterfully deal with it in just a few pages.
Wonderful stuff. This was the first Valiant comic I had to pay above cover price for (my LCS had sold out and I found it a few weeks later at their evil competitors). It was well worth it. A 10.
Continuity Note: In Magnus 25, 1-A will make the claim that he never experimented on humans, it would've been against his programing. He claimed it was a Malev trick, claiming they possessed Grand One shortly after Magnus 8.
Open up the insert in 12. The first fragging thing you see is 1-A in a panel from a Russ Manning comic telling Magnus he experimented on humans! Storywise, this is a whole year before Grand One's supposed possession! How could they not remember that? It'd just been a year since they printed those panels

An important issue in the VALIANT tapestry. Using the Lost Valley, or Lost Land, as a way to tie together different titles is the kind of genius that seems natural when you see the result. Here it was used in every way possible, including classic Magnus characters. A very well worked through comic. And it also has an interesting insert. Both the insert and the main story does however take us slightly too far away from the old Manning ideal world for my taste. Not really anything I complain about, but just barely enough to bring down the grade to 9.
