So has anyone read the C2E2 Solar/Magnus book yet?

Have faith ray... these guys (including me at time) are starved of Valiant and I can't speak for everyone but I would bet a paycheck that there were more than a couple 'magic moments' as they books were read through.

It's all good.

As much as it pains me to say this, I am really not a fan of the art in either of these stories. Calero's art seems stilted and inconsistent. I know it would be hard to out do Barry Windsor-Smith, but I just don't really like his take on it. I have seen some of his other work and liked it. I'm not sure why it puts me off so much here. Reinhold's take on Magnus is better, he does take the initiative to really fill in the backgrounds and really illustrate each panel. His take just seems almost cartoonish, I thought Leeja was supposed to be a little sexy and Magnus was supposed to be tough. I keep expecting a bad punchline, like I'm reading Mad Magazine. I know its probably not fair to compare these stories to the first Valiant books but it hard not to. The cover is fantastic on a positive artistic note. I hope Dark Horse reconsiders or the artists step up their game before the monthlies are released. The stories are ok, when viewed in the context that they are only ten pages each. The Magnus story is the better of the two for me.
I wanted to love this book, I loved the Valiants, I loved Defiant and Broadway so I have a lot of respect for Shooters ability to make a great universe. I'm going to continue to get them, I just hope Shooter has it in him to make another one.

So for me,
Cover - Fantastic
Interior Art - Poor
Story - Fair

Future - Still Hopeful

Finally got to read this last night. I was pleased with both stories. I know that both of these stories are just setups for what Shooter has planned for both characters, and both stories left me with a sense of anticipation of what's to come.

Of the two stories, I was more intrigued by the Solar story, and liked it's art better; though the Magnus art is growing on me. At first it came off as being a little too sketchy and, like orbitalshift said, a little too cartoonish, but the more I look at it, the more accustomed I get to it.

I am looking very forward to each of these books and I can't wait to see how they grow and evolve over the first year and see what kind of developments and stories Shooter gives us. I'm also anxious to see Turok and see what Shooter does with him this time. He was not used very well (and very much) in Shooter's time with Valiant and I would've liked to have seen him tied in much more with that early era, so it'll be cool to see Shooter concentrate on Turok and see where he takes him.

I agree. The Solar story, similar to the VH1 (... damn auto correct crap...) and Ack-Lame origin, but different enough. I am super duper happy he didn't reuse the 'I took this from my favorite comic book character as a kid' routine. That would have been the 3rd time, someone done that. As for the art, I am a fan of the Valiant coloring and the water colors of Solar are some of the best ever. Though this new rainbow pattern does make it more real. If you like Solar, yoooou miiiight be a Valiant fan.

Magnus.. It seemed not well thought out. The time hacks between the thefts and Magnus showing up were way off. "They're stealin the goods!" @ 11:49pm Then he wakes up Leeja 2hrs later. ... 2.5 hours after that, he's on site... :| It took him 8 hours, after a 2nd heist to find and neutralize the robots and call 1A back? Oh Come On! New editor please.

I totally dug Leeja's outfit from her opening pannels. Cover of Magnus 1 for the win! :thumb:

Hopefully, Turok will come back with the same Son Of Stone feel that Magnus 12 has. Absolutely enjoy that story. It's a great Dell/Gold Key tribute.

I knew it was a good idea to re-read Solar and Magnus before free comic book day!

It was Monday afternoon by the time I got around to reading my copy. It was very good. Not Earth shattering or anything (yet) but very good. It's hard to live up to the expectations that have built up over the past 15 years!

Instead of boring you by retelling the story, I'll bore you with something else.

There are several "similarities" and/or nods to the previous histories of these characters that I just thought I'd point out.

Shoot.

I guess that does it.

I am officially a comic book nerd. There can be no hiding it now.

Solar.

Updated comic book technology has allowed the artists to play even more with light in this book. I remember the coloring in Valiant's books being one of the initial draws for me. I loved the way that JayJay made things look real.

Light in this book has a similar feel.

I was surprised to see Atom Valley referenced. It seemed that it was dismissed in the Valiant books as too "comic booky".

While Solar is sorta levitating he's got a floating Einstein bust which was also present in early origin issues back in the 90's.

This time he figured out how to follow a news feed instead of it just happening almost by mistake.

This time it was the first super powered being he encounters that mentions the clothes being destroyed.

Jim uses a really cool technique in his writing. I'm sure there is a name for it, but I don't know what it is. Anyway, it's when one person says something and another person repeats it later. It's very effective for character development.

The story set up the series nicely in that we can expect to see some more "beings" with the power cores like the bad guy in this one had. Apparently there won't be "harbingers" per se, simply "anomalies" created by the fusor meltdown.

In Magnus I like the fact that his little apartment had an enormous fish tank in it. It gives it a familiar feel to the previous renditions where he lived in an underwater "secret base".

They emphasized the need to keep his little chip secret-again...of course in Valiant, he just took it out of his own head, it never really became a "threat"...perhaps Jim remembered something he had wanted to do with it?

All in all, I am just excited too see some more and feel like a dream has come true!

I didn't dislike the art at all, but I see what people are saying with the backgrounds and the inking/coloring not sure which. The black over the color is a little bothersome...

I don't have the variant, but I read the free book yesterday and it was great to see Solar and Magnus back again.

The Solar story was pretty good and I liked the explanation Jim gave for the suit. I thought that was a nice touch. The rest of the story was nothing outstanding, but I did enjoy it. I like how Solar is still figuring out how to manipulate his powers and the approach Jim is taking with this. The "you might be" dialogue that Solar used seemed a bit out of place. Maybe Jim is huge Jeff Foxworthy fan....

I liked the Magnus story and thought it stayed true to what we would expect of the character. Overall I think they are off to a good start with Magnus. The art was a bit off in some of the panels, but it wasn't terrible by any means. Also, I'm not a huge fan of the slick paper and don't think it's really necessary. Oh, one more thing.... the black boots have to go.

Just for the record:

My daughter hated the Magnus story. She said it was stupid, and really hated the art.

There you have it.

Im just the same as sanman but I kiled solar and magnus was OK but the art was too nit picky any way I posted at a site about the lanch date so I will copy and past so you can read.

hello again I got the new free comice with magnus and solar, WOW looks soo cool. I think solar is great the way they have protrayed him and his way of doing things very neet. As for magnus it’s OK. but I think solar will be the hit I dont really like the type of art in magnus BUT I will still be getting 1-5 of each comic and I bet in number one of each comic you will find a date for the release for Turok.
I do hope they do a a good job with Turok and make him more a native indian and not a hollywood replica of a termanator. I did not like what Acclame did with turok.
I think they should have lots of jungle shots and have him thanking the sperit of the animals he kills.(some times)
also I do hope they dont do a duplicut of the old son of stone comics I hope they start with the begining of the story. by haveing andar there and start the series like the old stuff but kinda go there own way with the carature. I wish also they had white pages and did the comic kinda old looking like a lost story from ages ago. I dont like what people are doing with comics now a days all digital and supper clean cut and video game like. I like the earlyer Valiant art of Turok also I hope they call it Just Turok. not turok son of stone, or turok dino hunter I want somthing new but old in the same well thanks guy Js

do you remember the comic shadow hawk there was one called images of shadow hawk I hated that art work. I get a light sense of that art work from the new magnus. also I did like solar because he has Way more potential as a carature. there is only so much magnus can do as a person.
in the valiant universe solar was a big part in the universe story line and he created mother god,and distroyed her. and with out Solar (mother god) there would be no unity. do you remember when Xo’s suit got destroyed who was there to get eric a new one, it was solar.
solar, magnus and turok may have there fates interlocked with this new series and I bet solar will be a huge part of it. if dark horse choses to put them together to fight somthing big. or save the world
I found solar neeter with the page were he is punching the guy and you can see like 5 punches like the matrix and I loved the mention of the matrix and Neo.
magnus was just that.. magnus nothing relly new BUT I did like the relation ship with his girl. I do like the old magnus and the beginning of the valiant series but not when he gets the bird and all that stuff. I vote for solar as a cooler careture and with more veriant of story lines he can be in. magnus will just be fighting another big robot. I have dedicated my self to the first 1-5 of each comic because I do like magnus I want to give dark horse a chance to WOW me. I will only pick one in the long run and that would be TUROK but I will still follow one of the others magnus or solar
please if you hear of anything about Turok let me know asap
well that was it a little long but you get my points.

FINALLY got my copy of FCBD issue! I was VERY pleasently surprised too. The art in the Solar story really isn't too my taste but it didn't spoil the story for me and there appears to be a huge scope for stories in this world. Shooter has given Solar multiple challenges by making someone responsible for the reactor explosion whilst also creating spacial anomalies that affect the world around him.
I thought Magnus was an ace introduction too more self contained but giving a quick overview of the character and reestablishing most of the main players from the Gold Key and Valiant era. I really liked the art on the Magnus section too, the robots look really cool and theres plenty of detail and things to look out for in the backgrounds.

Can't wait for Solar 1 now!

I got mine while I was on the road but finally got to read them. I really liked the Solar tale and found the MRF one to be only "okay." I think most likely because Solar was all-new and MRF was another "retread." Only time will tell, but I think I'll be picking up both of them.

It seems to me like Shooter is taking a similar approach to these characters almost the same way as he did with Valiant. Meaning he basically has to re-conceptualize Solar, since the original version was kind of hokey, while he must feel the original Magnus stories hold up pretty well, because it seems like he always ties his versions in with the Gold Key stuff, not really doing a "reboot" but just a continuation of what went before.

I guess he basically had to start from scratch once again with Solar since he can't use the Valiant stories, and it's very possible he told his best Solar story the first time around with Valiant, so I guess it's not surprising the new Solar story seems to pale in comparison.

I am far from a Solar expert, especially the Gold Key version, but I do wonder:

They're showing the VALIANT, pouchless, version of the Man of the Atom and he has a rainbow effect in the DH version. Are these both "lifted" from the VALIANT version, of did the good Doctor have a rainbow effect in the Gold Key stuff originally?

I'd wondered whether the rainbow effect was in the original too.
