Once a collection gets to $10,000 or $20,000 in "replacement value",
your normal home insurance probably won't cover it.
(If it does, you may have to keep an updated inventory on file with them.)

According to CollectInsure.com:

In most cases, your homeowners’ is designed to cover personal property and is not nearly enough to protect your collection. Homeowners insurance may:

-Limit contents coverage to a percent of the total value of your home (50 - 70%)
-Limit the amount they’ll pay for theft of valuable items like silver, crystal, guns, stamps, and paper documents
-Not cover losses due to flood, hurricane and earthquake
-Be based on actual cash value rather than the collectible value of the item(s)
-Require you to schedule all items (keep an updated itemized list on file)
:hm: Thanks

If you want to make USPS insurance required, the dollar amount you enter on the setup screen is charged per $50.00 increment. It used to be $1.65 but just went up to $1.70. So if you enter $1.70 in the amount and the auction closes at $100, the customer will be automatically charged $3.40. and on and on etcetera, up to $500.

FYI, customers paying with paypal have automatic buyer protection. Insurance is really to protect the seller.

That will not work for me. The charge for $100 insurance through USPS is $2.15, not $3.40, and eBay policy explicitly forbids charging more for insurance than is actually charged by USPS/UPS/FedEx.

"Insurance: Sellers offering insurance may only charge the actual fee for insurance. No additional amount may be added, such as “self-insurance”. Sellers who do not use a licensed 3rd party insurance company may not require buyers to purchase insurance. This is a violation of state law."

Buyers have automatic buyer protection against non-shipment or negligient shipping. They don't have protection if they claim the item wasn't shipped and the seller can prove it was, and they don't have protection if they item was damaged due to USPS mishandling (which is not the same as normal handling.) In fact, USPS will not honor insurance claims for items that have not been properly packaged (like putting a CGC case in a flat rate box loose) which cannot withstand normal, routine handling.

Insurance is to protect the seller AND the buyer against MIShandling/loss by UPS/USPS.

Well, whatever the rates are, there is a table in your ebay settings where you can enter the amount to charge for insurance. so you would enter $1.70 in the section for $1-50, then enter $2.15 in the section for $51-100, etc.
