It is a nicely sized store and they have lots of books. They also teach art classes and have guest people there all the time. People who draw The Simpsons were just there a few weeks ago. Considering he has the money or whatever he has to get that kind of guest, I would not say he is hurting for money. The guy is a jerk. If you take comics in there that are worth money he only gives 25% of what they are worth in credit and he chops that in half for cash. The comics he prices out though have to come before 1980. The worst part also that I noticed, he buys stuff for what Overstreet lists it at and then sells it for what Wizard has it listed at. It's wrong to rip people like that. He also has tons of CGC stuff. The Harbinger wrote:Darques_Emporium, what is the size of the comic store? At my very small LCS, they won't even accept anything if it's after 1975. The comic shop may be struggling to stay afloat, and spending the money on some valuable comics only puts them further in debt unless they can find a buyer very quickly.

Re: Evil Comic Store owner!
Not to try and revitalize old threads, but has anyone seen the latest News on the Valiant website? This comic store is the same one that Atom! Freeman owns. This is the guy who also is now the new Sales Manager for Valiant Entertainment. This is also the same guy that refused to order me the Harbinger Hard Cover graphic novel because he couldn't get it through Diamond Direct and went on to tell me how there was a lawsuit going on over the ownership of the Valiant characters from that SDCC fiasco a few years back and he was sure that Valiant Entertainment was a sinking ship that would never make it because the comic fans think the Valiant characters suck, and, according to him, they do suck. Not to mention his store is one of the most uncomfortable places my friends and I have ever been in as we are constantly stalked by some crazy lady who badgers us about donations, asks us if we are planning to buy anything while we are browsing, and calls my kids "Dorks" and "Geeks". Hell, you can go online and read all about how great the store is through customer reviews. Nothing against Valiant because I have always loved the comics, but knowing this stuff, I am a bit leery about this guy.

I hope so. If not, we are in for a wild ride. It is especially bad since I am sure everyone here wants to see the new company succeed as it has been far too long since we have gotten new stuff from the characters. I missed it.

Re:
This is exactly why I would never take a comic to a comic shop to try and sell them. They aren't going to pay you anywhere near what it's worth and you're just going to leave insulted. I understand why, though. At least around here, back issues can sit forever before they sell. 90% of the sales come from new comics and trades. I don't even think my comic guy will even buy back issues unless it's something really special.BrianT wrote:Too bad you're not on the East Coast. The LCS I go to, Brave New Worlds, is very nice. Although I've never tried selling them comics.
Something to keep in mind. If you're selling to retailer, don't expect to get what they're "worth" because the retailer needs to charge more than he paid in order to make a profit. Although $3 opposed to $60 is a big difference.
Were you able to sell them somewhere else and for how much?

Re: Evil Comic Store owner!
Loo at it this way from retailers,
You have 30 longboxes of product walk in a month, some wont to move it quick, someone will take it sooner or later so you don't have to pay much, pretty much everything right now is a buyers market, thats just the way it is, When I have someone bring something they want to sell, I ask them what they are looking for it, if its not close i'll just pass on a counter, it saves hurt feelings.

Re: Evil Comic Store owner!
The LCS owner the thread-starter described sounds like a prick, but he might be doing that simply because he isn't interested in bulk buys, unless they're old comics, so he employs a rude, but effective way of driving off people who are trying to sell to him.
Exactly. Expecting a comic shop to give you a good amount of money for your comics is unrealistic. It's like expecting a used car dealer to buy your car close to the actual value. Rare situations aside, when selling to a comic shop, the most you'll likely get is 25% of the value. Quite often, they'll pay 10% of the value, or less, especially with bulk buys.
That said, they're not obligated to buy from you. They're in existence primarily to sell products, not financially support someone's hobby. Unless you have something extremely sought after, you have to consider selling to a comic shop to be slightly better than trying to sell random things at a pawn shop........Also, comic shop owners likely get a lot of weirdos coming in expecting top dollar for comics which aren't really worth much.
The only place I bother "selling" used comics (Aside from the rare ebay auction) is Lone Star. Since they're local for me (Dallas area of Texas), it's hassle-free, and you can see on their website what they're willing to pay for each comic. I always use the credit option, since you get more "money" that way. I've bought an omnibus or two at Lone Star, via credit with comics I would have otherwise just thrown away.

Re: Evil Comic Store owner!
Yeah, this is the point I was making, not his policies on buying comics, although that does suck also. I find it ironic that someone so anti Valiant can be so Hardcore all of a sudden. He was supposed to carry the Harbinger book, but then decided not too. It was just a big pain in the arse. Then the trash talk, just very scary when you look at where he is now.Phantom.. wrote:T2KFreeker wrote:Not to try and revitalize old threads, but has anyone seen the latest News on the Valiant website?
