Evil Comic Store owner!
I don't know where to put this. My local comic store called Brave New World is a total rip off. I needed some money bad, so I went there to sell a few comics like the Punisher Mini and some other rare stuff I have. The guy took the stack of books I gave him and he weighed it. He tried to give me $2.80 for a stack of books that was worth something like $60.00. He tries to tell me that nothing made after 1980 is worth money so he only gives the paper recycling weight for the books. This is the biggest scam I think I have ever seen. Has anyone else ever heard of this perverse practice with comics?

The correct response would be to find an equal-sized stack of comics from his shop, all nice expensive issues and after 1980, and tell him you'll give him $5 for them. "What? That's almost a 50% markup over what you said they're worth!!??!"Darques_Emporium wrote:He tries to tell me that nothing made after 1980 is worth money so he only gives the paper recycling weight for the books.

Actually, that's about 100% markup. He only paid $2.80, remember?slym2none wrote:The correct response would be to find an equal-sized stack of comics from his shop, all nice expensive issues and after 1980, and tell him you'll give him $5 for them. You have to dumb it down for those kinds of LCS owners.greg wrote:Actually, that's about 100% markup. Oh, ok. Offer him $6.00 tell him he's doubled his money and he can keep the change.slym2none wrote:You have to dumb it down for those kinds of LCS owners.greg wrote:Actually, that's about 100% markup. Order the book online. If they can't provide service, they don't deserve support.Darques_Emporium wrote:I did not sell the books and the only reason I didn't drop an F bomb or two is because that shop is the only one nearby that is carrying the Harbinger HC. Nothing after 1980 is worth anything? So does this guy not have any back issues at all then? It's hard to imagine anyone uttering something so stupid. We need a hall of shame for LCS owners now.Darques_Emporium wrote:I don't know where to put this. My local comic store called Brave New World is a total rip off. Unless you went to Brave New World and he tries to tell you there not worth 5 bucks in recycled paper.....Jay Tomio wrote:I don't know if this sounds out of order to me (from a business perspective not accounting to his manners which obviously I can't judge). Obviously there are some books from that era in question that have some value but these are exceptions. To get $60 from a LCS owner for relatively modern books may sound like an easy task but I'd suggest it isn't.
Obviously this comes down to what a 'stack' implies, but you can bring in multiple long boxes from that era of comics and now get $60 for it.

Too bad you're not on the East Coast. The LCS I go to, Brave New Worlds, is very nice. Although I've never tried selling them comics.
Something to keep in mind. If you're selling to retailer, don't expect to get what they're "worth" because the retailer needs to charge more than he paid in order to make a profit. Although $3 opposed to $60 is a big difference.
Were you able to sell them somewhere else and for how much?

Re: Evil Comic Store owner!
There's a comic shop by me (coughDavenportIowacough) and the guy who owns the shop always whips out the newest Overstreet to check prices on EVERY issue and will expect you to pay that price even though the comic is in every other store's quarter or fifty cent bins. It's crazy.Daniel Jackson wrote:

PLUS, and this is what really drives me nutty, he has three different places in the store where you have to check for the same issue. Why not just put them all in the same place and save your customers some time and aggravation??

Guys, I hear your pain, but try finding extensive back issues outside of the big 2 in the second biggest city in the UK. I imagine London is taken care of, but the back issues in stores here are generally painfully inadequate.
VEI - I look forward to you one day publishing MORE than 9-10 books per month

There are two American art forms - comics and jazz.
