I had the 1,000,000th post on this board and all I got was this lousy custom ranking.

This person was certainly pleased.

"I am going to do something on this review that I usually don't do on my reviews. I am giving a personal opinion on this issue. One sentence. This issue was probably the best single issue I have read, by any company,...PERIOD."

I'm looking forward to tomorrow!

Newsarama gave it a 5 out of 10

Overall, there isn’t too much for anyone here except the hope that it gets better.
Ouch...

Newsarama's score is a bit harsh but I can't argue with their review, pretty much spot on.

I mean, I really enjoyed the book but it might be a difficult jumping-on point for new readers, and there should be plenty of new readers with this book.

Can't please everyone. Personally, I like that this event is geared to more of the hard core fans, like myself. I'm tired of being summarized to constantly when I've read all the books and all the stories. And let's face it, every DC and Marvel event is so mired in continuity that BoD barely compares in that respect.

What's funny is that reviewer (Pierce Lydon) gave Book of Death #1 a 5 out of 10... and every other review I've seen by him when I googled it was a 3 out of 10.

I've stated before that I think most Valiant books are not necessarily new-reader friendly. But I was a latecomer to VEI who jumped on board reading such series as Imperium and The Valiant, and while there was a lot I didn't understand in those books, I could tell the quality and it only made me want to dive into the back issues and other VEI series so I could get the full picture. So I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing if BOD is not geared for new readers. If it's good and just accessible enough then hopefully it'll grab new readers who will also want to find out more about the VEI universe.

VEI really should be pushing the Scribd.com service as a way for new readers to catch up. I know they make more money selling the collected editions and back issues through Comixology, but Scribd is an incredible resource for anybody who wants to catch up on the VEI universe. It's pretty much all there for a very low cost.

That's true, Book of Death has been described as a deluxe multi-issue version of Rai #0 from the old days.

Anyone reading Rai #0 first would have been totally lost. I was one of those. Rai #0 was my first Valiant comic... and I didn't know who those characters were. Obviously, it wasn't my last Valiant comic.

Rai 0 was definitely not a good jump on point!

Yeah, this is not new-reader friendly but how could it be? It's the culmination and extrapolation of years of moving parts. But that's not to say it can't pique new-reader interest. It most certainly can and will.
