It was awful. Beyond bad, at least the oppsite of how good the first was.

As much as I love Miller and his work on Batman, guys give it a rest. The Dark Knight Returns was a classic, while The Dark Knight Strikes Back was so awful that it's tainted the first one so bad it's hard for me to enjoy it.

The Dark Knight Returns was one of those stories it didn't need a sequel, prequel, or a side story.

I enjoyed the 2nd one. Not nearly as much as the first, but I liked it. Compared to the usual Bat book, it was literature.

Frank Miller is probably one of the polarizing creators in comics and a lot of his major work hasn't aged very well including Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, 300, Daredevil, Elektra: Assassin, Hard Boiled, and most of the Sin City stories and all of the various Martha Washington sequels and some outright sucked like All-Star Batman & Robin, The Boy Wonder and Holy Terror.

Other than Batman: Year One, Ronin, Big Guy & Rusty, Give Me Liberty, and Sin City: Family Values the rest of his work is rather overrated plus added out of the 3 films he directed or co-directed that only one is considered rather good, the other two are considered awful by many fans and most critics.

I respectfully disagree. Miller's work on Daredevil remains the golden standard and Born Again hold up remarkably well to this day. Plus, elements of his Man Without Fear mini (which I still enjoy and love) are seen throughout the DD Netflix show. Also, his collaboration with Claremont on the first Wolverine mini remains one of my all-time favorite stories of him.

As for DK3, I wish that he was drawing it as well, there's no indication who the artist is, but last I heard, Miller has been having severe health problems, a type of cancer I believe, so I can overlook that aspect on the book, that may also be part of the reasoning behind Azzarello's involvement with this.

I think Miller's work has held up. Tastes change so rapidly, that almost everything you read will seem dated, at least to me. I reread Ronin and Hard Boiled relatively recently, as well at ROTDK. I love them all. I think Sin City is still contemporary. You can't hit a home run every time. I think if you get better than 5% of your work being considered amazing, you are hitting way above average. That being said, he's not quite as prolific anymore, and who knows how much stuff we don't see.

What I do know is that DC will milk this for all we've got. Just look at Watchmen and Sandman Overture, as to recent examples.

Some of it has sure, Give Me Liberty and Ronin as far as I'm concerned are still his best work to date. The only thing that hurts Give Me Liberty is the same boring sequels that Miller and artist Dave Gibbons did that kind ran it into the ground.
Hard Boiled was one of the worse stories Miller ever wrote and was only saved by being the major debut of the artist Darrow, otherwise it's at best pretty forgettable and at worse what is memorable is pretty awful even with Darrow's art.

Sin City is many things but contemporary isn't one of them. Hell it's pulp detective/film noir roots were old school even when it was new. Sin City has always had "it's so old it's new" kind of vibe to it, because when it came out no one else was doing it, and I recall in one of his answers to a letter Frank Miller told Jim Lee, Time Sale, and Dave Lapham to stop coping his style even though it could be argued that Miller was coping Sale's style.

Scott McDaniel (who's work I enjoy) was also called out by Frank.
Well, Frank shouldn't have a problem with people copying his style now.
Frank's deconstruction of his own style does little for me. And I hope to god no one copies Lynn's coloring from the DKSA.

I'm setting my expectations low, like Neal Adam's Batman Odyssey low.

I have to disagree on Sin City and Hard Boiled. The stories surely were inspired by detective noir, but that was very much what was going on in the movies and fiction of the time. Neo noir was popular from the movies of the Coen brothers, and many others. The use of color was unique, and was inspired by the meta fiction of authors like Paul Auster in his New York Trilogy. His use of negative space was especially innovative, much the way Eisner's landscape use of words was in the 1940s. Compare that to the black and white books of the day, and at least to me, it was like seeing a new way of storytelling. Hard Boiled especially , as we saw how unimportant the story was to the work itself. The story unravelled as much as Darrow's art did. It's like they both complemented each other. It's definitely not to everyone's taste, but I think if you look at the history of independent books, it's a high point and a departure from the status quo. He is an iconoclast (in all senses of the word) , and you can tell his work almost immediately.

I'll check out the DK3 of course but I don't recall much about DKStrikes Back. Not sure if that's good or bad really as I've read lots of stuff I remember fondly but just cause I don't instantly recall a story doesn't mean I disliked it either.

Miller is the dirty old uncle of the comic world now. I really don't want any more of his "*SQUEE*" Batman stuff, the Dark Knight Strikes Back was beyond horrible, and his all-star Batman series wasn't any better.

I really enjoyed reading that!!

I would feel the same... however, Even though Dark Knight Strikes Again wasn't up to the caliber that the Dark Knight Returns was it was still a really good story when read as a whole; meaning none of that months break that it had when it originally came out. I reread both last year and though I initially still felt DK2 wasn't that good, the more I let the story linger and thought about it, the more I liked it. There's something about his art and his crazy story telling that in the end made the book work.

For DK3, remember Miller is co-writing it. I think with the team having spent months collaborating on the story before even announcing it will assure this story works to end. I don't recall if Miller is drawing this though, if not then I hope they get someone who can draw in his style.

I swore off DC comics a few years ago, but I really feel this will be worth my money in the end!
