Do You Want The GK3 Characters At VEI?
I know this has been discussed before and is being discussed in at least one other thread now, and possibly a poll has been taken before, (though I'm not sure about that) but I'm curious what a current poll would reveal about the feelings of board members on this subject now that VEI's relaunch is well under way. Feel free to discuss here too.

Re: Do You Want The GK3 Characters At VEI?
Voted No. I'll explain later using this same space.
EDIT- Ya, so No for me. Why? Because I feel that these characters are coming on board because of popular demand. I don't see that as a good thing, although I can totally understand that the company is trying to make (most of) it's fans happy and at the same time, gain extra publicity and -of course- a rise in sales. I like the OG series ('cept Turok, never did much for me), but I did not start reading VEI in 2012 because they were the company that had these "great characters of old".
My opinion.

I vote No as I think VEI is doing just fine without them. That being said, should they introduced into the Valiant Universe (which I doubt), I'd buy them with out hesitation.

Yes, as long as the cost can be justified and the risk has been evaluated.

If this can be like 1991-1992 all over again and they can write great stories and sell thousands and thousands of books and make tons of $$$. Why not?

Re: Do You Want The GK3 Characters At VEI?
I vote yes if VEI could acquire the characters and own them outright. it could only be a good thing . not only would it be the best thing to happen to the GK3 in decades, but it would be the biggest news for Valiant since the relaunch. current fans aren't going to stop buying Valiant if they did, but people who aren't buying Valiant now may start because of it.

And as I stated elsewhere (apologies, Starbrand):
1) Their return will crowd out NEW characters and soak up talent.
2) If there was such an enormous groundswell for them as ongoing books, surely one of the most recent two revamps would have worked. I doubt it would boost numbers that dramatically after their first 3 or 4 "collector" issues.
3) A third incarnation in 5 years could have a negative perception among LCS shoppers.
That being said, if VEI published them, I would buy them so long as they were good stories.

Re: Do You Want The GK3 Characters At VEI?
Valiant became a very successful publisher early 90's with the GK characters. There's definitely lots of potential to bring these characters back to VEI.
The characters already have a lot of dept and range in the VH1 universe.

Re: Do You Want The GK3 Characters At VEI?
An emphatic yes from me. Especially if they can obtain ownership of the IPs. There is no way that could be a bad thing in my opinion. As others have stated, it gives VEI freedom to profit from already completed works (books, video games, etc.), allows merchandising (who wouldn't love to have a newly printed Unity cover T-shirt???), and the possibility of doing minis in old continuity like Q2 using the classic creators.
I agree, although I would love to see Magnus and Solar (Turok was never my favorite character) in the current VEI universe, they could possibly muck a great thing up. However, I'm sure VEI could pull it off. But this isn't necessary for the return of the GK3 to VEI's ownership to be a good move.
Dino has me very excited at this possibility. I'm sure (as he's a big fan of the GK3 himself) that he would love to have them no matter how they are used.
And in all honesty, who would be a better steward to these IPs than VEI?

Re: Do You Want The GK3 Characters At VEI?
There's two questions here:
Where do I want the GK3?
Do I want VEI to have GK3?
No doubt, the GK3 could find no better home than VEI, so from that perspective my answer is a huge YES!
But from the perspective of VEI I must say they don't need the GK3. Still can be good if, as said above, the cost is justified and the risk evaluated. So from this perspective my answer is "maybe". As is also said above, I'd rather see them own the characters than licence them.
With both perspectives combined, I answer yes, but mainly for the sake of giving the characters a good home. Btw, I personally don't build any expectation on the one tweet. We'll have to wait and see what it means.

Re: Do You Want The GK3 Characters At VEI?
I voted NO for the GK3 in VEI. I think VEI is doing amazing without them, and the Dark Horse, and Dynamite runs really didn't do anything for the characters. I don't feel that a return to Valiant will do much more, although, if anyone can do it, it would be them.
BUT, I WOULD like those characters back so we can have a nice UNITY DELUXE HARDCOVER, or something to those effects. Magnus Masterworks, Solar Masterworks. So, for purposes of monetizing, and reprinting VH1 stuff.... I'm all for that.
If they DO come back in VEI, I wouldn't give them their own titles for a long time. Have Magnus appear in Rai, Turok in Timewalker/A&A, and Solar in Divinity, or even messing with Harada again.
I don't think having those characters will add to the bottom line of VEI. Aside from the few of us on this board, those characters being at another publisher doesn't mean anything. And they failed....twice.

Re: Do You Want The GK3 Characters At VEI?
yes and no. no, because, like jmatt has stated, new characters would have an even harder time to get the spotlight.
yes, because of magnus. i think he would be very valuable for vei's 4001 timeline.
and also because of nostalgia (for whatever that#s worth). i used to love solar back in the days, but let's face it: the concept+design is kind of dated. if they would tackle him, it would have to be more like a re-invention and less a re-imagination, ergo: divinity

I think throwing the GK3 characters in would be great, and get a lot of heads turning as well. Even plebs who only read Marvel and DC know who Turok is.StarBrand wrote:I know this has been discussed before and is being discussed in at least one other thread now, and possibly a poll has been taken before, (though I'm not sure about that) but I'm curious what a current poll would reveal about the feelings of board members on this subject now that VEI's relaunch is well under way. A year ago, I would've said no, but I think it could totally work now.
EDIT: It was also give them the perfect opportunity to jump to 12 books per month.

Re: Do You Want The GK3 Characters At VEI?
I voted no.
I really don't see any reason, considering that company decided to start up a new Valiant line without those characters. Obviously they felt they could do it without them, I don't see any reason to think that 3 ancient characters who have failed to sustain themselves in their recent reboots would have any value to company's future. It's just baggage of nostalgia that's going cost the publisher too much money than it's worth.

Re: Do You Want The GK3 Characters At VEI?
If this were the start of the VEI line then yes, but they've developed their own characters and universe beyond the 3 and now it would feel like fitting the foot to the shoe rather than the shoe to the foot...

Re: Do You Want The GK3 Characters At VEI?
I wouldn't MIND having the GK3 characters come into the VEI universe, but they are by no means essential. They aren't some Holy Grail that Valiant isn't complete without (to me at least). In fact, there could be some troubles introducing at least Solar now that they have Divinity (depending on how that goes). Magnus would fit in well with the 4001 timeline, and Turok could go somewhere without too much issue. But I don't really WANT them back. I wouldn't be opposed to it on principle either though, so I chose Iscream since there was no other 'Meh' option.

Re: Do You Want The GK3 Characters At VEI?
With proper execution? Yes. I like the GK3 and I think VEI has done a great job hiring very competent creators. If they acquired the GK3, they don't necessarily have to give them all ongoings right off the bat. They would have to make their money back.
To me, I was a fan of those early 90s Valiant books and those characters just belong here.
I would love to see XO/Turok team-ups.

I agree with all that. Maybe even a title that is just this other universe with GK folks. And a big event to maybe bring in the characters down the road. Yeah I know the other universe thing and merge are little ugly concept due to the big two overuse of it, but it can work.

Oh, and I voted no - as it's not necessary, but I can still enjoy it if helps Valiant
