Wow, surprised no one started a thread on this yet.

Fantastic read. A little exposition heavy, but it set the tone nicely and sets off a chain of events to come. We learn a lot about the main character, though his origins are quite mysterious...as is his last 60 years. Lots of mysteries to unravel and it doesn't seem likely to happen all in 5 issues. How the Ausie soldier fits in included.

Love the Hairsine art, and the Kindt page was really interesting. The Vine? Was that a "Mother God"?

I enjoyed this issue a lot. Cool character. The narration was perfectly done. Can't wait to learn more!

Good setup issue. Art was great, writing was good. Followed along without problem for the first two-thirds, the last third was a little impenetrable. But I'm good with that, I don't want issue #1 ending with "I'm Divinity!" (ala Shadowman) or whatever he's gonna call himself.

Liked the nod to Unity: Time is not absolute! The imagery about the characters on separate pages occupying the same time-space when the book is closed was a very nice flourish.

Great cover art (love the 1:40) and the cover stock is fantastic!

I loved the art and writing but it was definitely one of those issues that was high on the ???????s. Luckily, the characters and circumstances are interesting enough to ensure that these are all questions that I can't wait to find the answers to. I wasn't blown away by it but I think that the issue got me prepped to be. It seems like a more cerebral story that they are going for along the lines of 2001: ASO.

Now Ninjak #1-- I really hope that blows me away. Tech savvy ninja action- yeah I will expect a lot from that one right out of the gate

I won't say I was disappointed, but it wasn't what I expected it to be. I thought it would feel a little more cosmic. Instead it felt very existential to me. Maybe the cosmic, epic and grand feel is coming. I sure hope so. The issue certainly raised a ton of questions and it may be that this si a series we won't fully understand til it completely finished. One thing I find interesting is the whole concept of time being fluid, so I am sure that will be explored a lot, with the character of Divinity moving back and forth through different times in his life with ease. One thing we know is Matt Kindt does every little thing for a reason and there are always little hints throughout his books. One thing I noticed is the hands missing on the watch in the panel below. I would be willing to bet it was done on purpose!

I wonder if her looking like she has fetal alcohol syndrome is also a plot point?

This also wasn't what I was expecting but enjoyable enough. I don't know how common this is but it feels like Kindt is repetitive with his writing at times. I think in Rai #1 it was stated that this was the first murder in Japan in X number of years multiple times. And in Divinity, it's stated how he is in peak physical and mental condition repeated a few times. Maybe I'm being nitpicky but I get it! Just tell me once and I get it.

Also, it feels like Kindt is a little repetitive with his writing at times.

That left me scratching the old noggin. And was that Divinity in the sky beyond the baby's hand, or just an oddly drawn bird?

i think hes comparing when he was abandoned as a baby to when he landed back on earth and the soviet union was gone

i hope so. that makes sense. but showing the baby's hand on the last page like abram's on the first confuses the point trying to be made.


i'm thinking this issue is a good example of comics being written for trades and the shortcomings of doing this. this story arch will probably be awesome but leaving so many readers confused is no bueno.

Yeah, you have to angle it correctly against the light, but the text is definitely readable under the redaction.

My guess would be that the words 'abandoned' suggest he was brought back to Earth by someone else...

It's so wrong, but too funny. I cracked up legitimately when I read this post. Yep. Hairsine isn't one of my favorites. His eyes are always too small and too far apart. This is an extreme case of that.

But, as far as the writing, there is a lot of unfolding to do. If you want your mind blown even further, listen to the latest OTV podcast that has theories that haven't been mentioned here yet. Will make you think again about what's going on. Me personally, I have no idea yet.

there is a actually a lot about his art that i like. he puts some extra emotion/ subtle moments in the art.

if Rai 7 is any indication of kindt's writing style i wouldn't expect much "unfolding."
