If VEI published more monthly books, how many would you buy?

Post by leonmallett »

Just pondering this question; so as a non-representative sample of VEI readership ( :D ), what would be the limit of VEI books be for you realistically?

Obviously, hypothetical titles and creative teams would influence those decisions, but that aside, thinking about the amount of VEI and other publisher comics you buy, what would your hypothetical limit be?

1 vote per member. :)
VEI - I look forward to you one day publishing MORE than 9-10 books per month

Financially, I'd probably be limited to around 10 max. But that could stretch a little here and there. If they had a dozen solid ongoing titles (that I liked) I'd be hard pressed not to be getting the extra two as well. My list for that would have to be something like this though:

X-O
Unity
Bloodshot
Harbinger/Imperium
A&A/Timewalker
Ninjak
Rai
Eternal Warrior (ongoing again, not just a parade of minis. I haven't bought any Days of Steel yet and I'm not highly encouraged to so far.)
Fixed Shadowman and/or Dr. Mirage ongoing
Generation Zero?
Ongoing for the character from Divinity?
Armorines or HARD Corps?
Something else from the 4001 time- Psi-Lords? Spylocke? Eternal Emperor?

There's no Quantum & Woody on my list. Not interested anymore. I made it through the end of the first series and that was about enough for me. I'll stick with A&A/Timewalker for my funny, thanks. I don't know of any other IP's of Valiant's that I would just be not interested in like with Q&W. I'm definitely more likely to start collecting something or give it a shot if it's going to be an ongoing. Mini's I can take or leave (until I've read some of it, then I want it. But it being a mini can stop me from getting the first issue. For instance, I was interested in Dr. Mirage, but not enough to buy the first issue because that would mean committing to the mini. I didn't plan on getting any of them. Then I got a copy of the first issue as part of the prize package stuff a while back and now I want to get the other 4 to finish the story!).

I don't currently buy the 9 books per month on offer but that's mainly because some (after giving them a reasonable try) are not for me (A&A, Shadowman and Q&W) but assuming VEI could bang out 10-12 books per month at the standard of XO, Harby and Rai then yes I'd buy them. Anything over that amount and it'd be more of a struggle to read them time wise as I read a few other books too (Saga, minimum wage) and I'm trying to re-read (the better stuff) from my 90's collection.

Ideally, I'd like to see between 12-16 monthly titles, at least 70% or so ongoings. This would allow for 3-4 books to be published a week, which is pretty much my sweet spot for both time and money.

In addition, I'd like one new hardcover per month. I'm not particular about whether it's Deluxe Editions, Valiant Masters or Omnibus (except to limit Omnibus editions to, let's say, quarterly.)

I'm an all-in Valiant buyer and I own every hardcover tpb they've so far published (including the early 3, which I'll happily replace with newer editions as they become available.) As such, I currently buy, and would continue to buy the full line of books they publish. Some I haven't cared as much for (Q&W, Bloodshot, SM: End Times) but I still get them and read them. My son reads a few titles as well.

I think VEI would need to either climb above 20 issues per month, or significantly drop in overall quality for me to stop getting all the books.
I wonder what it would be like to be a lonely, muck-encrusted monster? Probably be an improvement.

100 is about my budget for the month for comics

so 15 Valiant titles I would be able to handle

That's 60 bucks if i just get the regular cover

It gives me room to get some pullbox/incentive covers + some trades/comics from other publishers

But everyone has their own budgets ... I think from a business standpoint, I think its smart of them to keep the line manageable. It gives them flexibility to rotate titles in and out of the line ... and maintain quality by not stretching editorial, writers, artists too thin.

I would hope to expect them to increase the line gradually year after year.

I think 12 ongoing titles by the end of the year should be a goal for them ... followed by 15 by the end of 2016.

Hopefully a snowball of momentum leads to a big movie in 2017 or 2018 which allows them to expand the line over 20-25 titles by 2020. And then hopefully off to the races for the Age of Valiant Superheroes making a huge impact across the entertainment industry.. A Valiant Fam can dream right? :thumb: :cloud9:

in addition to these ongoings:

X-O Manowar
Unity
Rai
Ivar, Timewalker
Imperium
Ninjak
Bloodshot Reborn

I'd also welcome any of these:

Quantum & Woody. perhaps a sequel to Q2
Eternal Warrior, ongoing. or Eternal Warriors with Gilad and Armstrong in 4001
Shadowman
HARD Corps, I'd like to see them fight the Armorines.
Future Force or another 4001 book
Faith or Livewire, mini or ongoing
Harbinger: Generation Zero
Doctor Mirage

These would be my choices for 15 ongoing titles for Valiant

1) X-O Manowar
2) Unity
3) Rai
4) Imperium
5) Ivar, Time Walker
6) Ninjak
7) Bloodshot: Reborn

8) The Valiant - as an ongoing series. Every arc can feature different corners of the universe and bring in new top notch talent every arc. I would make it so there are 3 month breaks between each arc to make sure its top quality.

9) Shadowman - This is one of Valiant's best IP's. It needs to come back in a big way with a top notch new creative team. I think i'd like to see Lemire take on this title with a top notch artist who can give the title a dark and grounded feel.

10) A Supernatural Team-up book featuring Dr. Mirage(Shan and Hwen) + more characters(Punk Mambo? Sandria? March/Black Mask? Baron Semedi?) - I want Jen Van Meter to continue her excellent work on the Mirages and continue to expand the Dark corner of the Valiant universe.

11) Harbinger: Renegades - Peter Stanchek is back with the Renegades to face off against Imperium, Project Rising Spirit (and HARD Corps) and the rogue Psiots of Generation Zero. (Dysart with a co-writer)

12) (Dysart 4001 Title - Psi-Lords?) I would give Dysart free reign to create a character and title that expands the 4001 timeline ... or re-imagine Psi-Lords. A title that hopefully will be a mind blowing concept that connects his current day Harbinger titles with the future. Give him 3 month breaks between arcs to maintain quality.

13) The further adventures of Archer and Armstrong - because they are awesome. Give it a twist - I'd like to see Archer lose his ability to access the Akashic records to make him more human/less powerful again.

14) (Kindt/Lemire new title) - I'd like to give Kindt/Lemire who like working together a title that they can have plenty of room to create something new and interesting that expands the universe and strengthens continuity. Divinity as ongoing?

15) Eternal Warrior - With the right writer this could be a great ongoing series. I'd have him step back from Unity and let Livewire officially take over as team leader on that title .. have him re-focused as the Earth protector and his battle with the Houses.

Mini-series that I'd like to see sprinkled in here and there
Quantum and Woody - I think these characters work well as a mini-series / one-shot stories
Secret Weapons - I think they could do something interesting with this IP name as a mini-series (to start)
Trinity Angels - why? Because there is some much needed girl power in the VEI universe. Keep it sexy but dial it down with the raunchiness.
Darque Passages - Further flesh out the Darque's.
Armorines Vs. Hard Corps - This would be a cool mini-series that features 2 unsympathetic teams facing off against each other.
Livewire - I think she is a great character. I'd test her out as a mini with the eventual idea of making her have an ongoing title.
Generation Zero - I'd like to see these characters sprinkled around the universe .. with an eventual mini-series of their own and perhaps an ongoing down the line.

I would be happy to buy about 15 titles from Valiant a month. I would maybe go a little higher depending on the titles. I only had 6 books waiting for me this month. Valiant left money on the table. I would have liked a few more books.

Personally, I'd say to keep it at or around 10-12 titles. More than that and things can get quickly out of hand and unwieldy. 10 or less keeps it in the realm of fans being able to purchase all titles. As for which titles I'd like to see personally:

X-O Manowar
Harbinger
Bloodshot
Archer & Armstrong
Shadowman
Eternal Warrior
Unity
Rai
(last slot or two saved for various mini-series, one shots, etc.)

Personal preference? Keep these all as ongoings. I HATE constantly relaunched titles and disguised ongoing titles that are actually a series of mini-series (similar to what Harbinger has become) and titles that put out a few issues then take a hiatus while some other series comes out, then the original title comes back for a few more issues (like what they're doing with Rai). At best it feels gimmicky; at worst, like a company who doesn't have a clear vision and/or confidence in itself. Again, that's just my own opinions, I know they have their reasons.

I want Valiant to stick around a long time!

+1

I'd try out every single new series that comes from VEI. However, I suppose if it approached 15+ per month, I'd start getting a little more critical of what I was going to keep up with, for budgetary reasons. The only comics that compete with Valiant for my $$ are Image books. I'd probably drop a few of those to make room for more VEI, but not stuff like East of West, Lazarus or TWD.

I am a huge valiant fan.
Just considering my options and reading ttime, I opted with 9 max titles.
I chose this number so I could continue to read a coherant universe in my mind.
I hhavee other things in my life and don' want to be bogged down with 15-20 tiles a monh to kep track of.
Of course ~ if valiant put out 15 ~ 20 titles a month, I maybe focus on a lower number of core books and buy the rest in Hardcover form.
I wish their was a Spinal Tap comic, and I had a copy CGC graded at 11.

I fall into this category as well. The past decade I've rarely bought more than 12 titles from any publisher for any prolonged duration.

As stated in the OP which titles they are would be a factor but if it was the entirety of the VEI monthly output I'd get all 12.

My preference(as of now):
  • XO
    Bloodshot
    Archer & Armstrong
    Ninjak
    Eternal Warrior w/Kay the Geomancer
    Ivar, Timewalker
    Harbinger/Renegades/Generation Zero (something from here)
    Rai
    Doctor Mirage
    Unity
Shadowman (with a serious thought out plan)
    HARD Corps
This is before I've read Divinity and know anything about that. I wouldn't miss a Q&W monthly.
I'm not overly impressed with what I've seen of the Armorines re-introduction thus far either sadly.

Looks like I'm the sole ice cream vote!

I really don't care. I'm buying all 9 right now because I can. In truth, once they expand even into 10 or 11, I'll drop 1-2 for budget reasons. (I'll be dropping all my Marvel titles after Secret Wars but that is because I pay for Marvel Unlimited and I was only getting Hickman titles in hard copy. They won't be replaced with anything, either. I read for enjoyment. Collecting has been relegated to Silver Age for me.) Comics just aren't worth the $3.99 anymore. Especially when they are easily found later for much less.

The weird thing is, if they went to 15 or more, I will probably get less than 9 on a monthly basis. Books like Q&W just aren't my thing. I get them to say I'm supporting the entire line. Once they cross the line where I don't feel comfortable paying for "the whole line", I'll drop to only my favorites and catch up in digital like I do with most other titles.
