Re: What comics are you reading now?
I'm currently reading Batwoman #18-24 and Annual #1 which is the conclusion to Williams/Blackman run which is a shame DC canned the idea of Batwoman getting married and I feel bad that they didn't get to end the series the way they had planned and the new writer has to finish a storyline that he was never involved in and try to close what seemed like at least a 6 issue arc (to at most another 25 issues) in about 40 pages and set up his run.
I've been alternating Batwoman with The Twelve TPB and find it a very interesting read if at times a bit dull while a great read I don't think it's as good as say Rising Stars and Midnight Nation but then again since I consider Midnight Nation to be second best graphic novel of all time (right behind Watchmen and it's IMHO JMS' greatest work in any media and is million times better than Babylon 5) that is a probably not a fair comparison. To me the real highlight is Chris Weston and Garry Leech's artwork which is terrific.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
The Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #18-22 a great ending to "season 1" of this series. There are plenty of shocks, turns, surprises, and revelations. There is a great coda story in issue #22. If you've not reading this series then you're doing yourself a great disservice, because this book is in the same league as any of the current Image great reads (East of West, Saga, The Walking Dead, Invincible, The Rat Queens, and others) and is better than most of them. If you think this is just a toy book read it and you will find a great series with great characters, humor, and some very nasty violence. If Micheal Bay's films were one billionth as good as this book, those movies would be modern classics. Anyway way this series is a great read.
Thanos Annual #1-It's a really glorified recap of Thanos' history set after Captain Marvel destroyed the Cosmic Cube. Starlin does a good job condensing 40 years of history and it's ending is a great lead in to the upcoming Thanos: Infinity Revelation graphic novel. The art by Ron Lim is nowhere near as good as his earlier work. still a great recap and set up with some funny jokes as well.

I had never read an issue, but since I kept hearing really good things, I splurged for the digital deal when they offered 1-110 for $75 on Comixology, and have been buying the floppies since then I'm up to about issue 30 or so now. Re: What comics are you reading now?
This was probably my favorite Marvel series ever. I am still disappointed it ended and re-read the issues regularly. So friggin good. I loved the Punisher as a kid and still love the character, but not so hot on the new series they've been doing. I just can't read the "soft" version of the Punisher remembering how great the MAX title was.nscc wrote:PunisherMax by garth Ennis. I thought Garth understood the character better than anyone. His war comics are stellar as well. The Punisher should be a "hero" for adult comic readers. I just don't feel like he should be in the regular Marvel continuity, unless they bring back Franken-Castle....which was actually a ton of fun for me. I am definitely a monster kid.

I enjoyed this issue as well. I thought it served as a nice recap for any new readers and seeing Starlin working with Lim is always a treat. Though there was a rumor circulating awhile back that for some odd reason, Marvel wasn't letting Starling use Adam Warlock for his upcoming stories. Starlin had expressed his puzzling confusion over it. If correct, then it's a shame since this annual's ending seemed to be setting up something big for Warlock.Cyberstrike wrote:

My guess is that Marvel is that some of the suits at Marvel are POed with Starlin over publically claiming (and basically proving in the court of public of opinion) that he had a claim of ownership on Thanos and Marvel couldn't prove that they ever filed a copyright on the character.String wrote:I enjoyed this issue as well. Re: What comics are you reading now?
Since I am so far behind in my VEI reading, I went on an X-O Manowar binge this week and read issues 9-22 and the Unity Volume 1 trade.
Really good stuff and I am anxious to dive into the Prelude to Armor Hunters issues, but I think I should get caught up on Harbinger and Bloodshot, since those series are going to tie into Armor Hunters. I stopped after the Harbinger Wars storyline so I have some catching up to do.
The problem is there are so many competing books for my time and attention. For example, I have the first two volumes of Revival to read and the individual issues that will make up volume 2 of Lazarus. Plus, Trees #1, Caliban #2, Doc Savage #2-6, and the new Star Trek Photonovels books from IDW.

Almost the entire Punisher Max run by Ennis is gold. The only tpb/storyline I didn't care for was "Widowmaker" (The 8th arc,)......I liked the very last one. In my opinion, the second weakest storyline is the first tpb, but it's not bad.
Also essential to Ennis's Punisher Max line are Barracuda Max and Fury Max: My War Gone By......The first Fury Max tpb is just OK, nothing all that special, but the second Fury Max tpb is fantastic.

The Twelve was fairly average in comparison to Straczynski's better works....Have you read Straczynski's run on Supreme Power (with Gary Frank)? That's my favorite Straczynski run, I find it far superior to Rising Stars.
Straczynski considers Midnight Nation his magnum opus. I didn't like it all that much, personally. I far prefer Supreme Power/Squadron Supreme (w/Gary Frank), Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan, and Silver Surfer: Requiem....I consider those three runs to be some of the best comics I've read. Dr. Manhattan gets dismissed quite a bit, because some people didn't want to give the Before Watchmen line a chance, but it's the one truly good book in that entire line worth reading (Darwyn Cooke's "Minutemen" wasn't bad).....I also liked Straczynski's run on Thor quite a bit, but it doesn't rank up with those 3 titles I mentioned.
btw, I mention "w/Gary Frank" in regard to Straczynski's run on Supreme Power/Squadron Supreme because there was one arc of Supreme Power Straczynski did with Dan Jurgens which was absolutely horrible.

I have not read any PunisherMax stuff by Ennis, but I think you guys would really enjoy "Red Team" from Garth Ennis. Gritty crime drama with good cops, bad cops, and a surprising twist at the end.
Here is the description on Instocktrades.com:
Red Team, the NYPD's elite anti-narcotics unit. Eddie Mellinger, Trudy Giroux, Duke Wylie, and George Winburn have taken down one drug lord after another with a careful blend of meticulous surveillance and applied violence, but their latest case has hit a brick wall. Frustrated that a guilty-as-sin scumbag may slip from their grasp, they take extreme measures... and discover that doing the wrong thing can be very, very seductive. Eisner Award-winning author Garth Ennis is one of the most recognizable and popular writers in comics, with legions of fans appreciative of the moral ambiguity and intense violence in such titles as Preacher, The Punisher, Hitman, and The Boys. Collects the complete six issue story arc from the Red Team comic book series.

Janson's inking of Romita Jr was a huge plus as well. The action scenes at the issue's end were quite energetic.chriskay99 wrote:I enjoyed this one as well. I've also been catching up on the Nu52 Justice League via trades. Overall, it's better than I originally thought. The team has some interesting friction as they learn to work together and the public has yet to reach that typical 'hero-worship' attitude that is prevalent in the normal DCU. Color me intrigued enough to keep reading.
Also, Amazing Spider-Man continues to delight with #3. Slott deftly juggles good character moments while advancing multiple plot threads, great job all around.

I read Batman: Hush volumes 1 and 2. it was somewhat entertaining but kind of meh. i enjoyed the first volume a bit more than the second.
I'm half way through Satellite Sam vol 1 by Matt Fraction and Howard Chaykin, really digging this one so far.
