My return to Valiant Comics
Hi Everyone,
My name is Steve, and i want to thank Greg for accepting my registration onto this website and forum. I had actually joined many years ago, but wasnt active. But after hearing the OTV podcast with Greg, i thought i should join the Valiant community, hopefully meet some like minded Valiant fans, and basically geek out at all the insight that some of the fans bring to ths forum.
My story actually started in i think it was late 1991. I was collecting DC, mainly Batman related comics, but bought other titles when it looked interesting. I was also buying 'Wizard - The guide to comics' and noticed this Valiant Comics getting a lot of publicity from them. So i started buying Solar, Magnus and Harbinger. However i missed the first few Harbinger's and found out they were hard to come by and getting expensive. A friend from my work happened to have the Harbinger's i was missing (All with coupons), and he was a Sandman collector. And i just happened to have a Sandman no 1, which i swapped for his Harbingers. I also managed to get in at the start of Shadowman, Archer & Armstrong and Eternal Warrior, just as Unity was coming out. So by sheer luck, i happened get copies of XO, and i had all Valiant Universe comics just before Unity took off.
By good luck, i found more Harbinger 1 - 6, with coupons as well, so i cut the coupons and sent off to New York for my special edition Harbinger #0 Pink (I still have the envelope it came in).
I collected everything that Valiant offered at that stage, and had a standing order for everything Valiant put out, and managed to find any back issues to complete the 'Universe', even finding a Magnus #0 with card. At this stage Valiant became the next big thing, prices went through the roof and i had just managed to get in before all this happened, whcih was pure luck.
Around early 1994, i got married (my memories of my collecting are a little hazy, so forgive if the times/dates dont quite match up). I basically stopped collecting around this time due to being married and having other financial repsonsibilities (being an adult is not all its cracked up to be) and had to stop buying so many comics. This was around Harbinger#25, which i was a little disappointed in, mainly due to Chris and Flamingo bing mind controlled by Harada. I collected #26 and just thought the quality had dropped off and this, plus financial considerations made me decide to stop collecting.
I always used to go into my regular comic book shop and have a look at was coming out and hve a flick through, but not buy anything. Then i noticed they had stopped and didnt really think anything of it. I heard acclaim had purchased the company and were restarting the universe.
I'd get online from time to time ad see what the company was doing and to my disappointment i found out in about 2001 they had closed their doors. Id still look to see if anything was going on with Valiant, and saw this website which i used to look at once in a while. I used to rave about how great Valiant was and how i wished someohow the universe would contine.
Then about 2008 i saw a new Valiant Webiste, pretty much saying 'Coming Soon'. But nothing seemed to be happening and looked at the site every now and then.
Fast Forward to December 2012 and i found out that Valiant had restarted. I called a few comic book shops to see which ones were ordering Valiant. I found one that also had the back issues i needed. So i have every issue thats being released at the oment. I normally dont get too many variants, but i have all variants of Harbinger #0 #1 & #25. And ive managed to add to my original Valiant collection. Being in Australia makes it hard. i see all the issues i need, but postage is a killer. But i know they are available. So with time, patience and a few bucks, i plan on getting my full collection. Then when money permiits, i'd like to get some of the hard to finds like Unity #0 Red, or some of the Gold Variants. But i'll be happy if i can finish the collection first.
And thats my story. I hope it wasnt too boring for anyone reading it. i look forward to chatting with other Valiant fans, finishing off my collection and hearing about other fans insights into events within the comic.
One last thing, if anyone isnt listening to the Only The Valiant podcast, they should. Its very enjoyable, but i also gives me info on things i may have missed or not understood. You other fans are probably smarter than me, but these guys help me enjoy my comics better.
Thanks,

Batman was my thing back in the 90's too. I agree with you 100% on OTV!

Welcome, Steve. Neat that you sent away for the Harby Pink and still have the envelope.

Thanks Caxiotis & Greg.
My Harby Pink is my pride and joy amongst all my comics. I havent got the rare variants others have and i have some that are more expensive, but this is one i got brand new, straight from Valiant, so it means a little more to me.
