This is breathtaking, smart, magical storytelling - Neil Gaiman-esque Brilliant work from Jen Van Meter.
RDLT's work is profound. The look and feel is perfect. RDLT and David Baron are creating a comic art masterpiece.

This seems like it's a quite decent series, but I wish they would've given it a different name, because this couldn't be a more disrespectful remake if it tried. It's so different from the original Dr. Mirage series that it goes beyond simply being a remake trying to be original. In a way, it's kinda like Casino Royale-A very good movie, but everything about it is the antithesis of a normal Bond movie.

Re: Doctor Mirage #3 Discussion
Comic book characters get re-imagined all the time ... quite dramatically in many cases
The original Dr. Mirage is not like James bond.
It didn't have any legacy of importance, relevance or significant popularity within the comic medium.
Jen Van Meter took this 'ok' IP and has so far created something truly special with it.
(no disrespect meant for people who enjoyed the original - but you can enjoy the original and still appreciate this re-imagined version)

My point though is that this miniseries has *nothing* to do with the original, to the point where if it was called The Death Defying Doctor Bob, nothing would be lost.bygranddesign wrote:Comic book characters get re-imagined all the time ... quite dramatically in many cases

By the way, I definitely recommend the original series, which is not only highly entertaining, but very funny!

I hate to break it to you but this is 2014, not 1994. This is quite possibly the best written series Valiant has ever published, including older material you relish.ValiantChris1994 wrote:This seems like it's a quite decent series, but I wish they would've given it a different name, because this couldn't be a more disrespectful remake if it tried. Loved it! Beautiful and spell binding, I have spent a long time pouring over those pages last night and pine for more. What about the shot of the "corpse piano"? Wow. Shaping up to be ten times better than Shadowman. Speaking of which, I can't wait for him to show up in this series....I thought there would be some reference already when they went through the deadside...

Wonderful story and haunting art. I think Van Meter has done a great job of portraying these characters - their behaviors ring true to their motivations. All of them seem human as opposed to contrived personalities for a story. Great work. Was especially grateful to read the "origin" - the story of his death.
A lot happened in this book to both propel the story forward and fill in the back story. Van Meter did a good job balancing this. I can't wait for the next book!

I loved the reference to the Lyceum and it's emissary being late... yeah, think you might have to keep waiting on that one.
Loving this story, not as big a fan of RDTs art as others. What I'd really love to see is some kind of deeper dive into the mystical/supernatural realms. That map that was supposed to be part of the issue #1 Plus edition would really help enhance the story, along with more about who makes up these realms. Maybe a perfect candidate for a revived "Secrets of the Valiant Universe" series?

Stunning. The use of white throughout is wonderful. RDLT and Baron have created a sophisticated, unique, haunting and evocative style that trumps the comic art norm.QUARTZ wrote:Loved it! It might not. To me we can only start running around saying no connection if Hwen doesn't go back with her and is trapped as a spirit for a while. God I hope they let him go back.ValiantChris1994 wrote:My point though is that this miniseries has *nothing* to do with the original, to the point where if it was called The Death Defying Doctor Bob, nothing would be lost.bygranddesign wrote:Comic book characters get re-imagined all the time ... quite dramatically in many cases

I'm totally not understanding why this isn't an ongoing. I want this book forever. Cancel half the line if you have to.
With this issue, I have a new favorite book for VEI. If it was allowed to progress, it would give my two current favorites - East of West and Umbral a run for their money.
This is MY kind of book! Art is phenomenal. Story is better than anything I've read in quite some time.
Please Dino, Warren, whoever: don't let Jan van Meter go and make sure this book goes past the miniseries. Please!

Couldn't agree more with Lord D's points, and would add that the creative team has been telling this tense, page-turner of a tale without relying on explicit images of sex and violence, which is really, really unusual in the current US entertainment marketplace. Great series so far!

Personally, I think this book needs more sex and violence.

The plot calls for it so it wouldn't be gratuitous, IMO

Another stellar issue. Powerful character moments yet again with the story of their 'deaths'. I love the continued haunting richness & complexity to the characters & environment of the spirit world, and the detail in the adherence to the supernatural rules that must be followed or broken to achieve a set goal.
Add my name to the list of people who want to see this creative team tackle Shadowman!

Re: Doctor Mirage #3 Discussion
Another great issue of Dr.Mirage. Really wish this had been billed as an ongoing as it sets up where Shan is as a person. What her struggle(s) is and what she may do to resolve the problems. Then the next arc would go from there.
As much as I like Shadowman(the concept not what we've seen thus far) I'd be fine with him sitting around while Shan acted as the VU's supernatural leading character for awhile.
