Woody is too much of a d-bag and hard to like, but it does make me giggle on occasion.

I think the main thing that Asmus is missing (and it's a biggie) is that we're not supposed to like Woody. I'm fine with him being a *SQUEE*, but don't make him likable. He should be the primary antagonist in the way of Quantum being a hero. That's how I think Priest & Bright was presenting it (of the issues I read in the original series). Quantum had his faults too, but I saw him as the main character. It was Quantum (& Woody); that's what made the original series work for me. Someone on the boards here described it super-anal-retentive and super-slacker. The humor came from those personalties clashing.

Except that in the original series Woody was the voice of reason and Quantum was actually insane. The whole superhero thing was something Woody suggested so that he didn't go nuts or something. He's supposed to be very perceptive, empathetic and intelligent underneath all his bluster. Whereas Quantum is supposed to take everything pathologically seriously and is probably some kind of autistic. Among other things... the original run had fantastically nuanced characters. (I still really like the new run, but it's different.)

Been behind on my reading and read this one last night.
It was all set up. I agree that it just feels like it's own thing. I'm not feeling where it fits into A&A, is it post #23?
Is this post Q&W #12? I'm thinking it's intended that way and the time is left ambiguous for a reason.

I neither loved this nor hated it as issue #1's go but I don't think it's crafted well if the intent(as most #1's should have) is to introduce and get a new reader interested in picking up #2. This feels like a mini crafted for the already pro-VEI crowd. Dr.Mirage #1 feels like a book designed to snag new converts to the cause. This, Delinquents, not so much.

I will say that as someone who isn't an inherent Q&W fan I found them tolerable here. Still not Q&W #1-4 good but much better.
I'll finish the mini it looks interesting enough.

Just learned the back story on this from BTE. Very cool. This is a first.

I usually don't frequent this section of the board, and in fact i had to take a break from my hobby here for the last few months to get a house ready to sell. But i'm playing catch up now and can't wait to read this book.

One of the things about comics is that there are different stories and styles and tittles for different folks. I think this is one of those books.

I did not find this fun or funny. Halfaway I was actually wishing it would end. The art was dynamic and "cool" but the story sucked, IMHO. Meh. If I was starting to feel annoyed by Q&W, now I am. Sadly.

Will give the rest of the series a shot because I try to support VEI, but I'm so very disappointed by this first issue.

I came away really liking this issue. I haven't been enjoying Q&W at all lately, and if it wasn't for DCBS's package deal I would've dropped it by now. Maybe it's the writing or the inclusion of A&A, but I hope it continues to stay good through this series and carries over to the stand alone Q&W book.

wow, reading this was an almost painful experience. totally agree with the other reviewers in that i don't get it how editorial green-lighted this. i really tried hard getting into the vei q&w before and failed (two times). everything in this set-up issue felt kind of stiff, forced and predictable, even kano couldn't save this. it doesn't help that asmus very slapsticky humor is just not to my taste. will pass on the rest of the mini and this was def. my last asmus comic in this lifetime.

The issue I see here is that we have very styles at play. FVL does a lot of humor, but his strengths lie mainly in his skill with satire. Asmus, meanwhile, relies heavily on being as surreal as possible (though he has shown a surprising level of depth with Woody's characterization). These styles don't exactly mix that well, and when the first few pages show a map to hobo treasure written on skinned asscheeks you know exactly who's taking charge.

Actually in the Only the Valiant Podcast( episode 159: the Delinquents Party with James Asmus) James Asmus said the assmap was Fred Van Lentes idea, but you are right Asmus is definitely in charge in this series.
I found The Delinquents #1 overall enjoyable, it is a lot of set up but I think it will pay off in the upcoming Issues.

Just read this and I mostly really liked it. I particularly liked the page layouts. They were visually interesting, different from other books, AND enhanced the flow of the storytelling. Looking forward to reading the next issue.
