Unity #9 Discussion
This was definitely a bit of a "get us toward the climax," place-holder issue. Solid, but a bit of a quick read filled mostly with Livewire's commentary about her possible alien nature and an action sequence between Gilly and Ninjak and the Alien Hounds.
Some good moments though that highlight how good Matt Kindt is as a writer. The Gilad flashback and Ninjak with the cherry blossom were very subtle, but gave some great insight into the characters' thought processes.

Agree. It was a quick read, but enjoyed it. Loved the insights you mentioned as well as the Livewire/Booodshot scene. Very well done issue.BugsySig wrote: Some good moments though that highlight how good Matt Kindt is as a writer. Don't know why but I feel the relationship between Gilad and Ninjak is on par with Superman and Batman when those two are written decently.

this continues to be one of my favorite books, it hits my geek-spot just right every time. even without the Armor Hunters event going on outside it, this story would still feel like a big event. yet it also delivers great characterizations and moments, like this banshee villain in Gilad's flashback. like the previous Unity teams, I'd like to see her again.
Re: Unity #9 Discussion
So I guess Ninjak has super ninja healing powers or something? Gilad and Ninjak were both in pretty bad shape at the end of last issue, but in this issue, which seems to take place very shortly after the last, they were back in action without a mention of their horrific injuries. Gilad can heal. What's Ninjak's excuse?

I think I am in the minority that Unity just does not click for me. I suppose to be fair I should say I am not normally a fan of team books in general, but at the very least I feel they launched Unity too prematurely before they established a lot of the individual characters well.
This issue was too quick a read for my money. I did enjoy the Ninjak/Gilad interaction and I do think Valiant is doing action in a way that is more satisfying than a lot of other companies.

Re: Unity #9 Discussion
We've been watching Gilad carry around an axe in the present day for no real reason for quite a while now. We finally get to a scene where the goal is to "cut their throats"... and he's given a rifle.
A decent issue. I had a few quibbles with the art, some of the posing and anatomy were odd. Like the silhouette running across the bridge.
But overall, pleased. Livewire's not Vine, that settles that theory.

I did enjoy this issue, but maybe didn't need multiple panels of Ninjak's sword with the flower petal. I got it.
Love the way the artist draws Ninjak though, very cool.
Crazy that Bloodshot was ready to down Livewire, even crazier that she was ready to die. Really, of rho good reason? The entire earth is in danger, and she's just gonna call it quits because of a personal issue? That's strange.
All of those little things aside, I like where everything is going. "Is your hand really going to grow back?" Hah hah!

Well, if she HAD the XO virus, she'd have been too dangerous to live. But I agree that she'd more likely want to help until after the current threat was over. For safety's sake.Bone-A-Fach-ee wrote:I did enjoy this issue, but maybe didn't need multiple panels of Ninjak's sword with the flower petal. I got it.

This was a great character issue, not something I expected in the middle of a huge crossover. So many great moments! And that Ninjak/cherry blossom scene was damn beautiful! Kindt is just awesome!

Solid issue. I enjoy Gilad and Nijack's interplay. I think the Livewire scenes made the book for me. Especially when Bloodshot was ready to put her down. I can't wait for Bloodshot to engage the AH. Plus how Livewire will fit into the overall tactical plan. Armor Hunters is some of the best VEI stuff yet.

I kinda want Kindt to launch a Ninjak solo after reading this issue. Probably the best character in this series, and I love them all.

Re: Unity #9 Discussion
This was a good issue
But I agree with some of the problems too
Why would Livewire want to kill herself?
Even if she finds out she is infected ... why would you end your life while you are showing no signs of going crazy ...or losing control ? Why not explore the possibility of a cure? Why not try to help humanity as much as possible ... before deciding to end your life? Maybe I need to re-read to understand the "why" but it didn't feel plausible to me ..and made me lose some respect for Livewire as a character.
Also if she WAS infected ... wouldn't the Armor just repair her head like it does with Malgam?
The fact that she has been shown several different times on Unity covers as having mechanical Gun arms ... I'm guessing they intended on her being infected ... and growing weapon arms at some point???
The dynamic duo of EW and Ninjak is pretty sweeet ... but yeah, I'm not sure how they went from being beaten to a bloody pulp the last issue to 100% strength this issue ... has weeks passed since the last issue?
Overall, a good issue - Well written despite my issue with Livewire and some continuity issues. The art was strong. I liked the EW flashback.

Re: Unity #9 Discussion
The book has some flaws, and is not the strongest of the VEI line for me, but still very enjoyable.
The art and the writing are solid enough, although I feel that some (only a few) story beats in the series could do with a little better explaining, and not just in this issue (the transition from 5 to 6 where the team is suddenly trapped in the box also comes to mind).
My question is: after the Armor Hunters phase, who will sit in the 'rotating chair'? Stanchek? A Visitor? A Shadowman/woman? Aric again? Does Bloodshot stay?

Yes, it's time to get rid of the clunky axe in favor of something far more elegant such as a sword.leonmallett wrote:jmatt wrote:We've been watching Gilad carry around an axe in the present day for no real reason for quite a while now. Great point.

The real reason I still read this title is because it's the only current title to feature Gilad. As such, I'm enjoying how Kindt is building up his relationship with Ninjak here, the flashbacks and insights were very well done. He keeps this up and I can see this duo attaining the same level of importance as say, Armstrong and Obie.

Kindt has done a great job with all 3 of his main leads IMHO, but the partnership is definitely growing stronger with each issue.String wrote:Yes, it's time to get rid of the clunky axe in favor of something far more elegant such as a sword.leonmallett wrote:jmatt wrote:We've been watching Gilad carry around an axe in the present day for no real reason for quite a while now.
