What comics are you reading now?

Everything else comic-related that's not VALIANT-related.

As for what I'm reading, I'm finally branching out beyond Valiant since that's what got me restarted in comics in 2012. I dropped Quantum and Woody, and will probably drop Bloodshot after the A&A crossover. I may consider ditching some other VEI titles since I'm not über enthusiastic about certain ones, and am finding good stuff from other publishers. I already added Manifest Destiny to my pull file. I got the first few issues of Black Science and think I'll continue picking that up for the time being. I've heard 3 good recommendations for Lazarus so I'll check that out as well. Oh, and I get Saga in trades, so it's those and most of the VEI stuff thus far.

Brother.... TRUST ME..... get East of West. AMAZING!
Not in terms of tone, or story, or any of that, but in terms of quality...are we talking potential for alltime great, such as another Sandman, Watchmen, Y or Fables, or are we talking more like simply one of the best of the era, something more akin to Robinson and Harris on Starman or Miller's run on Daredevil/Fraction's & Brubaker's on Iron Fist?
I think there is the potential for being in the same "ballpark" of: sandman, fables. I like it better than Saga and Chew.
If I was to Keep it 90, all my monthly comics in one pile and only 1 book I could read..... It would be a hard hard decision between Habry, XO, and EoW. My heart would lead me to Joshbert Dy-Ditti..... but if someone chose EoW over Harby-Manowar, I could see it.

The big big thing (besides crazy good storytelling) that Fables and Sandman have is longevity. If EoW can go for the next 5 years, the potential for greastness is there.

If I was to describe EoW in one word it wold be - Epic. It has urgency, it has complex and dpeth of character for a reason, the art and tone is GREAT. I love the coloring. It feels massive but easily attainable.

Bottom line, I love this book. At shows I pimp Valiant.... the only other book I really push is EoW.
I'm very excited to hear you rate it above Chew and Saga, which I think are pretty much the best non-superhero books on the market, right now. I'm going to have to hunt this one down. I agree about Fables and Sandman having longevity on their side. Not only in terms of epic runs, but that once they were over, they remained. Fables, of course, is still going, but people won't soon forget this. That's exciting to hear another series might be in that ballpark.

Well, this is an easy answer! Just look at the books you've listed. Original properties vs recycled corporate characters. If it's going to be great, it's going to be in the first group..... Welcome to the new age of comics.

Got the first trade, yo! I stopped and started reading it over several days. It was good, but I wasn't blown away by it but I need to read it all in one sitting instead of what I did the first time around. It deserves another shot after how much adoration it's gotten on here.

I made that same mistake the first time I tried it and thought the same thing. When I tried it again, I allowed myself more time to read it and I really got into it and I think I read it in a single sitting which isn't something I do often. I may have needed the reread as well. Hickman's writing.... Sometimes I miss things on the first read.

I think I that I read EoW the slowest of any book I read. I don't turn the page until I make sure I got everything.

For the record..... it is not my favorite book coming out.... (Joshbert Dy-Ditti) but I enjoy it as much as the other 2.

That'd be my as of now top 3 also, but Snyder's Batman might have something to say when this Zero Year thing ends. :D
East of West is the ONLY series I plan to get in both tpb and singles. That's gotta say something since VEI is my fav publisher and Batman is my fav SH and i'm only getting them in singles. Only one week to 10! :thumb:

On topic: been reading some stuff from last year that I hadn't had the time or patience to go through and found a gem- Batman and Robin Annual #01. This is got to be one of the best done-in-one Bat stories I ever read. I swear I'm not exaggerating, it's hilarious and heart-warming at the same time, while giving us a Damian that is on par with Grant Morrison's. This issue should become a classic- Bat fans YOU HAVE to read it.

I was talking purely quality of runs and those 3, for corporate characters-and really, unless creator owned, they all are-were truly exceptional runs.

I just finished reading Batman and Robin #18. :(
There was a reason I stopped reading "Batman and..." for a couple of months since the death of Damian. I enjoyed that character a lot. A lot. His demise is a great loss for FUN Batman comics. As a result, I am just now catching up on those AND DESPITE THE FANTASTIC ANNUAL, wasn't expecting much from the following issues.

I've let a couple of tears roll, I'll admit. And just after reading the #01 Annual, it just strikes harder. Fictional characters and all that.

I've been thinking of re-reading all of the Crossgen books myself but I'm so behind on my current stuff plus I have a back log of stuff from the past year or so yet to read.

I'll get to them after that though. Those were some great books :thumb:

I sold a bunch of my Crossgen books back in the day, I still have a few full runs: Sojourn, Merdian, and Ruse. I'm going to do a re-read and then I think I'm going to add them to my full runs for a sale at shows.

Thanks for the recommendations on Lazarus. I went to a shop and was able to get 1, 3, 5 and 6 all for cover price, and I also picked up the first trade so I could read it all. I blew through it all and realllllllly liked it so I added it to my pull list. :thumb: Kind of feels a little like Godfather/Game of Thrones with the families controlling power, and also a little bit of Bloodshot with the created super-solider thing. I also can't help but think of Alias/Jennifer Garner when I look at Forever, but maybe that's just wishful casting for a future movie. Anyway, thanks, guys! :thumb:

Now to go back and read my East of West trade and see if I can really sink my teeth into that!

I am with you, Brother, on enjoying Lazarus. :thumb: I have the first 5 issues and I ordered both Volume 1 and 2 of the trades. I was disappointed to see that none of the author's timelines or essays are included in the trades. :!: Makes me want to stick to buying the single issues just to get all of that backstory.

I also read the first East of West trade and enjoyed it too. Must do a re-read to really make sure I understand all the moving parts.

Has anyone else read The Dead by James Maddox and Jen Hickman?

I guess it's digital-only. I found it on Comixology, and at 1.99, I bought it on a whim.

It has been pretty interesting, so far. The title makes it sound like a zombie book, but it isn't. It starts out on the premise that when you die, you go to this enormous mansion, and get to create your room however you see fit. The rooms are apparently only limited by your imagination or willpower. It's only two issues in, so I don't really know much more than that, but I found it to be a good read.

I never see it brought up anywhere else, so I thought I'd give it a little love. Check it out.

(Man, bad timing considering the news of the Comixology hack.)

Did I (or someone else) mention The Bunker yet? I like the first issue, which reprints a bunch of chapters that were published digitally first (so, I guess if you want to own the first appearance, you have to buy a website). Pretty decent, and apparently an option for television has been picked up, and it's somewhat underprinted.
If you're not a *SQUEE*, you're okay with me.
