Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
I read it. It's good, but not amazing. But I'll admit that I had that reaction when I read TWD and Invincible at first as well. It might take a few issues to really see what Kirkman will do with this project. Not sure what the print run is, but I'm going to narrow down my earlier guess…iggy101us wrote:Kirkman writing for now . . . how long can he keep it up with so many projects? Have you read it yet? How's the story?StarBrand wrote:With Kirkman writing Outcast, there's also always the chance it's actually a really good book, too.
… and say about 25X. Which would put it at about 180K. Kirkman has already said that it outsold the latest issue of TWD (which based on Comichon data is 71,352 for #127, which went to a second print).I think demand is going to be high, but the supply is too. Lots of people will be speculating on this book considering the cash that Invincible and TWD pulls in. I'm guessing that the first issue will have anywhere from 20–50X the print run of TWD 1.
With the upcoming television show already being baked into the demand for the book, I can't see that there's going to be a lack of supply to meet the demand, unless hoarders are going to insist on sitting on this book to limit supply. But that's going to require that all of them do (and I expect that there are plenty of people that bought stacks, thinking that the price is going to follow a similar path as TWD and Invincible back issues). It only takes a few of them to blink, not wanting to be stuck with a ton of unsold inventory, and start selling to bring the price down to a reasonable level.
If you're not a *SQUEE*, you're okay with me.
Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
Can you really say all demand for the comic from the upcoming TV show is already baked in to current prices? If the TV show is wildly popular, I'm sure demand for the comic(s) would grow. There would be TV viewers that aren't right now even aware of the comic, and others would want to begin picking it up after seeing the show, especially if it's a big hit.kjjohanson wrote:I read it. Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
Perhaps I should say that I think anticipated demand is already accounted for in the print run. Granted that there will be some people that will be looking for the comic after the television show airs (assuming it's done well). My point is that there would have been plenty of people that were expecting that demand later on when ordering the first issue. So there will be some amount of people looking for the book, but there will be plenty of copies out there to be had, which I think will keep the price down.StarBrand wrote:Can you really say all demand for the comic from the upcoming TV show is already baked in to current prices? Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
A few things about The Outcast.
A big west coast dealer (one of the biggest) went in big on The outcast. He told me that He asks Kirkman if he is going to continue to write the book or pass it off down the road. He told me that Kirkman is going to keep on writing it.
But I know a bunch of dealers that went in big on this book.
Lastly, I don't have a single copy. I think the big dealers are going to have bunches of these books, and I can't compete.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
Agreed on the ceiling, 75-100K+ is just too damn high. I don't compare it to the Batman #1 where a lot of genuine readers wanted to get a copy, and there was a gradual increase in price and demand as people realized how good it was. I don't think a book which is almost entirely speculative-based from the beginning has any real potential.
Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
I don't know. A lot of smart people have speculated on Outcast 1. It's not like they have no reason to do so.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
I'm kind of looking at this as comparable to Valiant in the '90s. Early books were very good and went unnoticed by a majority of collectors. Due to a low print run and decent quality, demand exceeded supply and prices shot through the roof. Then a new number 1 comes along, and hey, new #1! Old #1s are valuable, I'm going to buy heavy and cash in. That's where we're at with Kirkman. Now, a difference here is that it's still Kirkman writing the new book, so the quality may be comparable to the books that are valuable. But keep in mind that then if you wanted to read the comic story in the '90s, you pretty much had to hunt down back issues. People that are interested in reading the Outcast comic are going to have trades available. People that are interested as collectors are going to know how many are out there. Yes, there will be some that don't, and a few people will probably pay more than they would otherwise have to, but I don't think there will be enough for heavy investors to make the profit they're expecting.StarBrand wrote:I don't know. Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
I can't comment on dealers/operators, but when people are buying huge bulk lots on ebay that doesn't tell me it's particularly shrewd, just aggressive. It's speculative, or in other words, gambling. Just like that guy I mentioned that paid $45/each for that lot of 33 issues of Manifest Destiny #1, he's been looking at nothing but a loss there. And he'd have to do a bunch of work to try to minimize the loss.StarBrand wrote:I don't know. A lot of smart people have speculated on Outcast 1. It's not like they have no reason to do so.

You guys might be right. If this turns out to be an outstanding book and the TV show is popular, it still might be a good log-term book though.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
I think enough people are already expecting that both will be, so they'll both have to be for it to maintain any sort of value. If the series turns out to be good, I would look to subsequent issues that have important events or first appearances of what might appear to be major characters (as Kirkman's series tend to have a lot of both). Those will not have heavy speculation in advance of the issue.StarBrand wrote:You guys might be right. I feel that way most of the time - this has been a Walking Dead thread for years really. I used to sort of look at this community as a haven of comic market studying geniuses. When did everything become about WD, Chew and the "small convention cash grab" route? Granted those books move, but there's a lot more going on, no?depluto wrote:You know, I check this thread most days. Getting a little tired of all the Outcast posts ... it's a dog with fleas. I don't either (any longer). But this thread has helped to keep me informed as to when it's a good time to get rid of books I no longer want.depluto wrote:I love the info I get here, and I don't even invest in comics (well, maybe once in a great while).

The first couple issues of Haunted from Red 5 reportedly have print runs of around 1,000, and there's already an option for a movie deal. I just sold an issue 2 in vf for 6.99. Now I better go check my copies of Outcast 1 for fleas.
