My non-serious comment was going to be "Kurt Busiek on Ninjak"; I was seriously looking forward to that Acclaim title when it came out because of Busiek's Astro City series from the '90s but I think the Acclaim books were too marketing-driven. Would love to see him take another shot at something Valiant.lorddunlow wrote:My guess is this was a serious comment, but it is too good to pass up...kjjohanson wrote:

Now THAT would be a series pitch seemingly ideal for a 3-5 issues mini series format.

I would honestly love to have Terry Moore write a monthly Dr. Mirage book after reading Rachael Rising he handles the creepy Very well.

Re: Which writer would you like to see write for VEI?
This was the most entertaining thing about Ninjak #1 (to me); I only read it once when it came out, so I remember very little about it, except that in one scene he goes to the Acclaim offices, where someone refers him to the office of Allen Rausch. Allen Rausch is a real person who worked for Acclaim's video game division. I know this because he's one of my sister's best friends from high school. (I know him as well; we all used to go to cons together when we were young.) They put his name in the comic because they accidentally left it out of the credits of one of the games that he had worked on.jmatt wrote:You're on a roll today.kjjohanson wrote:My non-serious comment was going to be "Kurt Busiek on Ninjak"; I was seriously looking forward to that Acclaim title when it came out because of Busiek's Astro City series from the '90s ...lorddunlow wrote:My guess is this was a serious comment, but it is too good to pass up...kjjohanson wrote:

All I remember about is was the term "stumblebum", not sure why that stuck with me; I think he morphed into a villain. Maybe because I don't actually know people in the comic business, unlike you, you lucky *SQUEE*.kjjohanson wrote:This was the most entertaining thing about Ninjak #1 (to me); I only read it once when it came out, so I remember very little about it, except that in one scene he goes to the Acclaim offices, where someone refers him to the office of Allen Rausch. Rick Remender and Paul Jenkins are two of the best at telling a compelling story from beginning to end.
If you haven't yet check out Jenkin's "Deathmatch" this guy knows how to build a believable world.

Old Man's War is fantastic! Scalzi would make the Armorines awesome. Not like the whiny ninnies they were in VH1.kjjohanson wrote:Does it have to be a working comic writer? I'd love to see John Scalzi on an Armorines series. (Any other Scalzi fans on the board?)

I loved Redshirts, but hated Old Man's War (which I read on the strength of Redshirts). Particularly the dialogue.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Re: Which writer would you like to see write for VEI?
A bit of a curve ball here but I'd like to see filmmaker Shane Carruth take on a Valiant title. He's done 2 small films Primer and Upstream Color. I've also read some about another unmade film called A Topiary.
I don't know if he has an interest in comics but he's put out 2 of the best sci-fi films in years and the concepts in A Topiary were fascinating. I think he was also listed as a consultant on Looper.
I would love to see what he could do in a comic where there isn't a limit to his budget.

I'm all for that. I'll have to check out Upstream Color. Didn't realize it was the same guy.
I LOVED Primer. That movie blew my mind. So well written.

lorddunlow - I've not seen that. Thanks for posting it. I'll warn you that Upstream Color is a much different kind of film. I thought it was great. His uses of sound was amazing. Sounds such a key part of cinema but rarely is it used in inventive ways.

Upstream Color was awfully thinky for how late at night I had watched it. The visual and audio textures of the movie were engrossing, however.

Shadowman- Bob Hall
Rai-David Michelinie
Hard Corps-Chuck Dixon
Eternal Warrior-John Ostrander
XO-James Robinson
Bloodshot-Charlie Huston
Ninjak-Ed Brubaker
Quantum & Woody-Peter David
Archer & Armstrong- Jim Shooter
Yeah, I miss the old Valiant.

You don't know how relieved I am to read that. I thought I must be fantastically dumb for not getting everything after two viewings. Three viewings should get a person college credit and figuring it out should get someone a genius grant.jmatt wrote:Wow, somebody mapped Primer? Take it another step. Greg Ruka on Geomancer. One thing I've always noticed that people never bring up, the dude writes strong female characters. Far better than any else in the field who is male at least.Manaf82 wrote:Greg Rucka on Eternal Warrior would be better..It needs a better writer
