Bob Layton & VEI

Post by grendeljd »

Saw this post this morning on facebook;
Bob Layton via facebook wrote:Had a wonderful dinner at C2E2 with Dinesh Shamdasani and his crew from the new Valiant Comics last night. Not saying any more about it for now but it was a productive meeting of the old Valiant and the new incarnation. They're a great bunch.
It doesn't mean anything will happen, but great to hear they got together & had a good time. I know most of us here would absolutely love to see Bob do some work on the new VEI books. :thumb:

hmm, so maybe my conversation with Dinesh at Wondercon, (after my lunch with Bob), will bear seeds. I don't really take credit for this, Dinesh is smarter than I will ever be, but I may have nudged this into happening, even if by pure luck.

I believe some seeds were being planted in Charlotte 2012 because I remember Fred taking some VEI books to Bob across the floor. Only X-O 1 & 2 and Harbinger 1 were out at that point.

So I'm going to go into the "reading too much into this" mode... I notice he says meeting between old Valiant and new incarnation. Could this mean it was more than just Bob Layton at the meeting? I still firmly cling to the idea of seeing new stories by the old crew in the old universe.

Back to reality, I'm glad to see that things appear patched up between them now. I hope the same can be said for Shooter one day as well.

LOL, well according to Bob, that meeting and subsequent conversations did not go well. I don't want to say too much, but, according to him, his decision to do dynamite covers was a direct response to his correspondence with vei and his unhappiness about how it was handled. Bob loves attention, but let's just say until about 2 weeks ago, he was not in a good place about his relationship with vei (even if he thought well of the individuals involved on a personal level). there is a lot more to it.

I know EXACTLY what he's alluding to, and you are on the right track. I know both sides' feelings on the matter, and both are right and "wrong" at the same time, it's nobody's fault, really.

Wow, glad to see that patched up. I remember both Bob Layton and Jim Shooter stating they didn't like the new VEI. So it's good to hear Bob Layton is back on good terms with them. :thumb:

Bob was unhappy about the coloring job they did on his story in the XO hardcover they put out prior to the relaunch, if my memory is correct that is.

Yikes.

But that does make sense. (Not a fan of the Harby coloring either)

I'm surprised it took this long to happen. When I talked to Bob in Boston 2 years ago he was impressed that Warren was heavily involved.

Would love to see Layton inks on something VEI!

While I can understand that, as artists are very protective of their work and rightly so, we are talking about a VEI prior to the relaunch with minimal resources at the time. They weren't working with the Brian Rebers and Jordi Bellaires of the world at that point.

And if memory serves, wasn't a certain former EiC the current EiC at the time? Shouldn't he have been to blame?

Anyway, just pointing out it would be silly to hold a grudge at this point, so I'm glad it seems to have resolved itself.

My impression from talking to him in 2011 was that Dr. Mirage was the issue between the two groups.

Do you remember what specifically? In 2011, VEI had yet to premiere their Dr. Mirage.
I wonder what it would be like to be a lonely, muck-encrusted monster? Probably be an improvement.

I seem to recall it was over ownership, or a stake in ownership of characters that Bob had created.

Not ownership. Sorry, edited my reply because I said too much, and probably should not have.

I was gonna say.. Bob WAS Dr Mirage. He made that book and those characters awesome! It went downhill after issue 13 when Bob was longer writing. The art was barely "passable" for those last 5 issues.. but the writing was no comparison.

NOTHING could make me happier than Bob coming to VEI and working on a continuation of Dr. Mirage. :hope: I won't hold my breath, but I can always dream. :cloud9:
