Flower is so right for this book! Was great to go back to the look and feel of the first arc. That said I quite enjoyed the second arc and the series all round so far. Goat #0 was great. Love the fact that Vincent has some of Derek's memories, adds some great depth to the character and makes him feel more like part of the story than just a gimmick.

Well, what do you know, an issue of Quantum and Woody that I really enjoyed. Very cool story. Very silly, but I'm pretty sure that is the point of this book.
Art - no Ming Doyle! Please, VEI, never let her do anything else in this company.
Writing - above and beyond better than the last arc.
We'll see how the next few issues go - I may keep with this book after all.
Maybe we should start a letter writing/Twitter/Facebook campaign to both VEI and Layman about this. He's doing a crossover with Revival - this would work even more smoothly!

If VALIANT becomes the company we all want them to be, a lasting one, then copyrights and trademarks are to be considered down the road.kjjohanson wrote:I guess they could go this route, if they want to do away with the "dead is dead" philosophy and emulate Marvel and DC.Captain Craig wrote:What I find intriguing is that at some point perhaps a method could be found to clone a new human body for Derek and transfer his mind out of Vincent. That could have HUGE repercussions on the interaction with Eric & Woody.
One of, if not the most important reason, that dead isn't DEAD is to maintain the copytrights&trademarks. Without that you can't license, sell and promote said character for growth and profit.
In my 25yrs of reading comics I'm quite jaded to the gimmick of _______event means _______dies. I no longer read events that sell me on some heroic death but I'm old enough to understand the business of the beast.
At some point, if we, or VEI, are lucky they will need to resurrect someone for if nothing else, legal reasons.

There are creative ways of doing that (flashback stories, VH1 stories, etc.) that will help maintain trademark while not messing with the universe that's their main output.Captain Craig wrote:If VALIANT becomes the company we all want them to be, a lasting one, then copyrights and trademarks are to be considered down the road.kjjohanson wrote:I guess they could go this route, if they want to do away with the "dead is dead" philosophy and emulate Marvel and DC.Captain Craig wrote:What I find intriguing is that at some point perhaps a method could be found to clone a new human body for Derek and transfer his mind out of Vincent. Re: Quantum & Woody: Goat #0 Discussion
I thought this was an ok read. The last page was a BIG moment but on reflection I'm not sure it fully made sense as the goat seemed to have a level of conciousness before the accident?
Massive improvement on the art and the new artist on the next arc looks good too. That said I'm in 2 minds whether to stick with book, especially as there is a cross over with A&A soon which could be a good jumping off point!
2.5 / 5 - decent read, maybe a 3 on a second read?

Re: Quantum & Woody: Goat #0 Discussion
This was the make or break issue for me and it had to be superlative after the disaster of the last arc.
Fowler's art delivered but I found the story a little too goofy for my tastes at the end of the day I just don't like these characters. I no longer anticipate reading this title as I do the other Valiant books, in fact I kind of dread it.
My new policy going forward on this title is to buy 1 copy only of the cover I like best for my collection but I'm not reading it anymore it hacks my V buzz and it doesn't belong in the universe IMO.

At the end of issue 4 the creepy ERA lady says they scanned Derek's brain before he died. It would be possible for the goat to have all of his memories if ERA put them there. Maybe they just wanted to mess with him by putting his mind in a goat.

I have no idea what really happened in this book. Reading half one week and half another week probably wasn't the best idea.
The fire on the ground..... I guess that means dad's mind is the goat?
I didn't notice the goat set the grass on fire so I must not have read it well.

Re: Quantum & Woody: Goat #0 Discussion
The best issue of Quantum and Woody so far for me, but since the bar is so low, it had to happen sooner or later.
I was fairly entertained in a throwaway kind of way. The issue was amusing, but I still don't think the writing is actually 'funny'. I get that others do, but different strokes for different folks.
My biggest gripe for the series over the 9 issues and shown here to the nth degree, is that plotting is pretty much to heap outlandish coincidence upon outlandish coincidence. Compare arguably VEI's two closest book in terms of premise: Archer and Armstrong and Quantum and Woody. The former title does not resort to cheap get-outs to move its story forward IMHO - while I feel that is all Asmus does in Quantum and Woody (the Goat's journey underscoring this; Woody cracking the password in the last arc; the inevitable meeting of Quantum and his former sergeant; etc.).
A book I am only still buying to support VEI as a whole and to keep a complete reading collection, although for the life of me I cannot ever see me re-reading these Quantum and Woody issues ever again.

Re: Quantum & Woody: Goat #0 Discussion
By a long margin, this was my favourite issue of this series.
The last page caught me completely by surprise, it turned a hilariously fun read into something more. I choked a bit on the burning message- yeah a "stupid book about a superpowered goat" made me roll a tear.
I LOVED it. More Asmus + Fowler, please.

Re: Quantum & Woody: Goat #0 Discussion
Well, I like the surprise ending. However, I'm not really digging this title. Maybe I just need to read the original Quantum and Woody stories by Priest and Bright (I have them on my computer, just haven't read them yet), and while I understand that they've changed some things, it would still help me to get why this book was so popular. Because it's just not doing it for me yet. Other than the ending, I kept wondering how on earth this goat could be so smart, and the issue implied that he was always a special goat even before getting the "mind transfer" or whatever.
Sorry, it's just not working for me. But, I love Valiant so I'll keep buying it, and read the issues over again and see if the title eventually grows on me.

I didn't get that Vincent now has memories of the dad? That's cool. I just really felt for Vincent, close to death, not being wanted, you really see that he has emotions. Will that backfire on Q&W? The fact that they tried to sell him/ get rid of him?
Thank you Tom Fowler! I love you sir.
Enjoyable issue. Interesting how they all go back so long, and didn't even realize it.

Re: Quantum & Woody: Goat #0 Discussion
I generally followed the story okay, and I quite enjoy the ridiculous nature of the book so I didn't mind some of the moments that are frustrating people here.
The one thing that did totally stump me was the burning grass message. I understood that the goat's conciousness had transferred into the white doctor bloke, whatever his name was, but how Derek Henderson's conciousness ended up in the goat, yet he continued his human life as per normal up until his death is beyond me.
It's been interesting to see some people's opinions that the 'interfacing machine' allows copies of conciousnesses (apparently) and somebody's theory about how the ERA may have put a copy of his conciousness into the goat just for fun, so perhaps I just missed something upon that first read. I do think however that if a key component of the story like this has confused the majority of people this much it's not a sign that the events have been communicated clearly to the reader. Will definitely have to give the comic another read.
As for the whole 'Vincent's previous adventures' thing, with the panel showing him meeting bigfoot and rescuing babies from burning houses etc - I'm surprised that nobody else seems to have stated already my view on the matter: I understood from that panel that those were things that the goat was just daydreaming about doing as he sets off on his road of freedom. I really don't think there's anything in the book that suggests those things actually happened. Anyway, that's what I understood from it.
Enjoyed the issue overall and very much like the goofy nature of the book
(Sorry Leonmallet!)
Also really, really glad to see the back of Ming Doyle. Such a relief seeing Fowler's art again.
