Re: Only The Valiant Podcast
I agree with Elveen about Harada being one of the main characters in Harbinger.
He is after all the head of the Harbinger Foundation and he probably gets as much if not more panel time than any other character in the series. And his importance to the book is vital.
But harbinger is about more than any one character so I can see why someone might call any of the characters supporting. There are plenty of issues in which even Pete is barely in it.

Re: Only The Valiant Podcast
I'm on the side of Harada being a supporting character. He definitely walks the line of being almost a main character, he's definitely a main antagonist, but not a main character imo.
by the way I change my official best of 2013 writer pick to Joshbert Dyditti

For the record, I think that Toyo is THE main character in the entire universe. More than anyone else.

It was a fun episode. You guys did a great job. And I always enjoy your take on things - we have similar taste's. I think you picked the Harbinger arc (of Harbinger Wars) for best arc which I thought was interesting. It wasn't my pick but I did love those issues of Harbinger as well - great character issues and the 1960's storyline with Harada was excellentJonesyAZ wrote:

Re: Only The Valiant Podcast
IMO, at its core Harbinger is about Harada and his foundation VS Peter and his renegades.Elveen wrote:For the record, I think that Toyo is THE main character in the entire universe. More than anyone else.
I think Harada and Peter are the essential characters on the chess board and the rest are the supporting cast.
If either Peter or Harada were to die - it would change the whole status quo of the book.
So I definitely agree with your feeling that Harada is the main character of Harbinger - and I actually think Dysart would agree as well.

I see your point, Harbinger (VH1) continued on past Peter's involvement in the conflict. The bible of the Valiant universe - Rai 0, revolved around Harada, not Peter. Pete was long dead when the conflict ended.
With VE1 Harbinger opening on Harada finding the Bleeding Monk, I can easily see Peter just being a pawn for either of those two.
So maybe Pete is just a supporting character...

Re: Only The Valiant Podcast
On the topic of Harada being a Main/supporting character: The definition that was being bantered about was that a main character had the title of the book named after him. Archer & Armstrong? Yes. Quantum & Woody? Yes. By that definition, Aric isn't even a main character, but the armor itself IS. But hasn't there been a time or two where Harada has claimed the title of being 'The Harbinger'? Didn't he name himself that when he first confronted Peter in the mindscape? Did he maybe say it outloud to Aric in Unity #3 when he and the Unity team got surrounded by Aric's Visigoth's with guns? I haven't looked back at these issues yet to verify, but that's what my memory is telling me. If so, then by the definition that was being enforced, Harada would be the ONLY main character of the Harbinger books.

Re: Only The Valiant Podcast
I don't think your name needs to be in the title to be a main character. (Saga, The Walking Dead, Unity, The Justice League, Revival, The Sixth Gun, East of West, Mouse Guard, Psi-Lords, Troublemakers.....)
I think the only qualifction for a main character is their role in the story.
Toyo = biggest role in the story (IMO)

I understand, and even agree with you. (After all, who are the main characters in the Star Wars movies? Just the stars and the wars??) I was just pointing out that by the definition they were using, Toyo would be the only main character for the Harbinger book. I don't subscribe to that definition though.Elveen wrote:I don't think your name needs to be in the title to be a main character. A text message exchange with Dysart and me....
EL- "Is Toyo a main character? Thoughts?"
JD- "Maybe I don't know the difference, and I don't really think in those terms but to me, he's a main character. As are all the renegades"
EL-"..... (me sending a long text explaining the OTV year end best of list and the discussion over if Toyo is a "Main Character" or not)"
JD- "haha! In the universe he's totally a main character. A way bigger player that the Renegades."
(I also asked Josh if I could share his texts and he said cool)

Straight from The Dysart himself; I guess that clears it up
Personally, what I loved about the "Best Of..." episode is that we had different opinions about this topic, and our tastes of course. And that is totally fine! It makes for good podcasting

I completly agree. Re: Only The Valiant Podcast
I look at it like this .... For the sake of arguement let's say Toyo's level of importance to Harbinger the title is 20% while Pete's is 30%-40%. Pete is slightly more important to that particular book. Toyo though has another 50%-60% importance in Unity and he has shown up in A&A a little too. So while he might not be the main character, or perhaps a better term might be the PRIMARY character in Harbinger, his is a main or PRIMARY character in the overall universe. In fact I would say he is THE MOST important so far, in so much as his influence and plans affect the entire Valiant world.
