Make Mine Valiant
Hi I'm Tyson & I love Valiant comics. I've been lurking for a bit but finally decided I should make an account of my own and start posting. I'm starved for people to talk about these books with! I keep giving away my trades and singles in the hopes that my friends and family might come to share my obsession.
My first encounter with anything Valiant was by pure chance sometime in the mid nineties. I found a well worn copy of Magnus Robot Fighter #0 in a pile of books and magazines at my Grandparents' house and read it. I wasn't driven to rush out and collect everything Valiant by any means but something about the characters and the other books advertised within it stuck with me.
Through my teens and twenties I read a lot of graphic novels and high concept titles (Y the Last Man, Black Hole, Promethea, Jimmy Corrigan & The Invisibles are some of my faves) and my opinion of traditional superhero books was low to say the least. I always felt the stories told by Marvel & DC were fairly hackneyed and predictable, all the characters have plot armor and nobody really dies or suffers through any relatable struggles.
Then I was introduced to Comixology and I started following a few of the New52 titles out of curiosity - primarily the Snyder/Capullo Batman, Lemire's Animal Man & JH Williams III's Batwoman. It was exciting at first but after the non-event that was Death of the Family and the editorial meddling that saw JHW III walk off Batwoman before his arc could be completed I realized DC was not the publisher for me.
It was around this time that I started wondering about the Valiant relaunch. I picked up the first few issues of X-O and Harbinger and I was immediately hooked. Finally rich, interesting characters that were believably human! Finally an interconnected comic book universe that doesn't have a half century of backstory to try to keep straight! The art! The stories!
As long as Valiant continues to publish interesting stories by great writers and artists I'll say make mine Valiant.

Welcome, welcome to the boards! I used to lurk for a bit, too, before I jumped in.

Nice story - how did your grandparents have a copy of Magnus #0? Random find, or were they clipping out the cards to send in?spiderland wrote:My first encounter with anything Valiant was by pure chance sometime in the mid nineties. Re: Make Mine Valiant
Thanks for the welcomes!
I can't be sure but I'm guessing it belonged to one of my uncles or distant cousins. I never did figure it out but I never forgot the cover and I remember it was the first time I ever held a "#0" issue of anything, which I thought at the time must be some sort of sacred artifact.chriskay99 wrote:Welcome, welcome to the boards! Good story
. It would be kind of cool if your grandparents read Magnus.
