New York Comic Con 2013: Wrap up
Hey guys. A little late on my NYCC wrap up but here it is.
New York Comic Con 2013 was my first convention ever. I almost didn't go but was able to get tickets last minute for Saturday and Sunday and I'm glad I did. New York Comic Con 2013 drew about 150,000 people this year. There was a huge turnout.

Saturday:
Upon entering, I noticed Valiant banners flying high above most of the other booths. Valiant had an apparent presence virtually in the middle of the convention floor which I thought was nice. Walking past the booth, I was greeted by two female associates handing out the Unity #1 Convention Preview and I took a few copies. As I approached, Dinesh (who i have never met before) came up to me and asked if I was familiar with Valiant. After I stated that I was very familiar with Valiant, you can tell he was happy to see a genuine fan. He asked me which book was my favorite and which I thought had the most potential which was cool. I chatted with Brian Reber who was coloring Bloodshot and the Hard Corps #16 for all to see as well. Dinesh, Atom!, and they other associates were nice to talk to and they genuinely wanted to get the Valiant name out which I liked. Matt Kindt and Doug Braithwaite were at the booth so I asked them to sign one of my copies of the Unity preview. I proceeded to purchase an Archer and Armstrong #14 NYCC variant and a Shadowman/Harbinger Wars sketch blank cover. I noticed they had Shadowman logo t-shirt so i picked one up as well.

I then planned to scavenge for Valiant books new and old throughout the exhibiter area until 4:00 which was the starting time of the Valiant panel.Surprisingly I couldn't find any VEI Variants on the walls, just DC 3D covers, and they were selling. However, I had better luck in the 50¢ and back issue boxes. I was able to uncover the following.

Rai #1
Solar #2
Magnus/Rai Flip Books #1-3
Unity 2000 #3 (4 copies)
XO Manowar #68
Turok #47
Rai #33
Harbinger #5 with coupons (6 copies)
Shadowman #8 (5 copies)
Bloodshot Last Stand
Bloodshot #0 (Signed by Joe Quesada)
Ninjak #1 (Signed by Joe Quesada)
Rai and the Future Force #12 (signed by Sean Chen)
I then made my way to the panel. There was a nice turnout with a decent line. Someone was reading the first Unknown Soldier trade they picked up based on Josh's work on Harbinger which was cool and after a little while, they let us in.
Panel basically covered the beginning of Unity, what to expect coming up in Bloodshot and the Hard Corps, and more teasing about the 4001 timeline.Warren went on to eventually say that Aric will loss the armor at some point in Unity and will be worn by someone else for a brief time most likely. In Bloodshot and the Hard Corps, while executing a mission they apparently cross paths with another group of psiots we haven't seen yet. As far as the 4001 timeline, Warren basically describes how instead of flashing back, we can see the future of the universe as it peals away layers to the present which will be fun storytelling. They showed a variant cover for Eternal Warrior #5 where he looks very similar to Rai. My questions were answered by others immediately. Someone asked if there will ever be a crossover between Dynamites recently acquired Gold Key characters and Valiant characters. Dinesh answered with a firm "no." Of course, Rai questions surfaced at the end of the panel discussion and again, it was kept quiet leading me to believe we will see he sooner than later. Everyone at the panel was awarded with Quantum and Woody #1 Gold after whispering the password (Unity) to Atom! later on at the booth.
I didn't have much time left so I then made my way to the Artist Alley. I saw Mico Suayan and as I stated my appreciation of his work on Harbinger #0 and Shadowman #0 he did a quick sketch on my blank exclusive cover. A few tables down I recognized Justin Jordan. I approached him and let him know Shadowman #0 and #10 were two of my favorite Valiant books thus far and i appreciated where he wanted to take Shadowman. He was happy to sign the cover aswell. I stopped by Clayton Henry's table afterwards. Unfortunately he didn't have time to do a quick sketch for me, but Warren was there making Chappelle Show references so it was cool.
Sunday:
This day was just as if not more busy. I immidiately bolted to the Artist Alley as I figured it was the best chance to catch Clayton to do a sketch on my sketch cover. When I got to his table I noticed he was doing a commissioned work of Pete Stanchek. After chatting for a bit I learned he had two more commissions to do before the end of the show and wouldn't be able to do a sketch for my cover as time wouldn't permit it. I got him to sign my Archer & Armstrong #14 NYCC Exclusive cover and moved along. I was then thrilled to find Fred Van Lente's table. I asked him to sign my exclusive cover as well. I asked him about his next endeavor writing Magnus: Robot fighter and how he got the job for the title. He replied by saying "I wasn't involved in the negotiations." I thought that was interesting to say the least but didn't want to press matters any further. He then told me that there was a Dynamite panel coming up that afternoon. I kind of wanted to hear the new writers take of the Gold Key characters. I got his to sign my exclusive cover as well and moved long.
The time came for the Dynamite panel. As I approached there was no line. In fact I was the first one there. As I walked in, with my Shadowman logo shirt, the panel members commented saying "I bet he's here for the Gold Key stuff. " Obviously they were correct. Slowly more people showed up. Some of which being Dinesh, Alejandro, and others from Valiant Entertainment. Then, an older man sat down a few seats down from me. I looked at his face and noticed…it was Bob Hall. I said "Bob." He looked over and I showed him my Shadowman shirt. He gave me the thumbs up and came over to shake my hand. He asked if I knew him from somewhere and I told him i was just a big fan. He said we should talk after the panel. I aaas thrilled. So basically there were about 15-20 people there total. At least 6 were Valiant related people which I thought was humerous.
The panel overall was poorly executed. The creators went one by one describing the book their working on and whats coming up in the said series. Greg Pak talked about how he wants to make Turok in a world inhabited by dinosaurs make sense. I immediately thought "The Faraway" but whatever. Fred Van Lente talked about thrusting you into a world where you discover it with the main character while updating the robots and technology for the futuristic world of Magnus: Robot Fighter. The new author on Solar: Man of the Atom, kind of bothered me. He stated instead of making Solar a science fiction based character, he is going to focus on Solar's family and "play with his powers." He went on to say he's going to take what he thought was cool about the character and basically built a new one following with "you can't please everyone." I don't know but he didn't seem too confident about the title or seem to generally care about it in the slightest. I asked the panel if any possible cross over could happen between Valiant Entertainment and Dynamite. It was answered with a bold "no." Nick Barrucci stated that he wants the characters to grow on their own, with Dynamite. Another audience member asked why Dynamite never has a booth for comic con as they just walk around seeing what other companies are doing. They responded with "we would rather put money into our books than send money on a booth." I don't believe that is true and I disagree with that kind of marketing but I digress.
I noticed Bob was taking notes during the panel and after it was over he approached people from Dynamite to talk for a bit. He came back over and I asked him if he was here interested in the future of the Gold Key characters. He followed with "Im just looking for work."I had him sign the only Bob Hall Shadowman book I had on me. I showed him my sketch cover and he said it needed a Shadowman. I was happy to let him add to the cover as we talk about Shadowman and Valiant past, present and future. Bob told me he was originally going to start the current VEI Shadowman but they decided against it as they thought with Bob it would be too similar to the older Shadowman and would lack moderization. I then followed by stating that if they did choose you, I'm sure many of the problems people have with Shadowman, such as the lack of depth with this version of Jack and the missing New Orleans vibe could have been remedied possibly before issue #13. He laughed and was humble about it but I knew he knew he would have gave Shadowman what he was missing as he knew the character like the back of his hand. He said Peter Milligan is pretty much leading Shadowman now, but he will be doing a single stand alone Shadowman issue coming up.
It was great to meet Bob Hall and it was one of the highlights of the show for me. He is one of the nicest, most approachable people in the industry. It is a shame that a creator of his caliber cannot find work but times have changed apparently.
Around 5:00 everything started to close down. I had extra money so I decided he Valiant booth would be my last stop to get a few more t-shirts. I was able to get both a Unity and Bloodshot shirt for $20. Before leaving I saw another familiar face. It was Robert Venditti. I introduced myself and showed some love for XO. I had him sign the latest issue of XO Manowar in his usual style. What a nice way to end the convention.
Overall the convention was awesome. Valiants presence was known, I got some great deals on books and some great exclusives and was able to meet some great people. I cannot wait for next year.
