Gold Key characters
IDW will be bring back some characters owned by Classic Media, which owns the Gold Key characters. Dino alludes to someone bringing back the GK3 in this interview.

Valiant should at least publish the 90's Solar Man Of The Atom, Magnus Robot Fighter, & Turok Dinosaur Hunter in the Valiant masters hardcovers.
they where a big part of the original Valiant.

But why? They need to be pimping their characters, not some other companies' characters. Right?

I'd personally be for that, but I'm not sure they have the legal right to do that.

Re: Gold Key characters
Trademarks and copyrights are different.StarBrand wrote:Dynamite has announced it's bringing back Solar, Man of the Atom!!!
The characters and stories that we know as Solar, Man of the Atom are copyrights. They belong (at least in part) to Valiant.
No one could bring back Valiant's Solar, Man of the Atom characters and stories without Valiant's permission.
The words/title "Solar, Man of the Atom" are a trademark.
An all new Solar, Man of the Atom, unrelated to the Valiant version is allowed with a trademark.
Anything resembling the Valiant version of characters and stories would require the copyrights.
If Valiant isn't involved, then by law, everything Dynamite does will have to be either Gold Key stories or new stories.
They can call it "Solar, Man of the Atom" with a trademark, but they can't tell Valiant's "Solar, Man of the Atom" stories without Valiant's copyright permission.

Re: Gold Key characters
It's true folks, one can infer from these teasers that it will be
Greg Pak on Turok (green background, with lizard scales)
Fred Van Lente on Magnus (metal background)
Frank Barbiere on Solar (solar system background)
Mark Waid on ??? (smoke background)
Just a side note, these teasers are horrible. I hate the writing and the graphic design. Outter glow on "WHAT IS THE KEY" and linear gradients on the creators names? How amateur. It's like someone's first Photoshop project.

I wonder if Waid's book is Doctor Spektor.

What was your greatest influence?
Mark Waid: In comics? Writer Jim Shooter, whose ability to marry character and plot and structure was terrific. As a writer outside comics? William Goldman and David E. Kelley.

Update on what's happening with the Gold Key stuff from NYCC:
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page ... e&id=48415" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Following a week-long teaser campaign asking "What is the key?" leading up to New York Comic Con, CBR News has the exclusive first details of Dynamite's new Gold Key line, which starts in February 2014 with "Turok: Dinosaur Hunter" by writer Greg Pak and artist Mirko Colak, then continues in March with "Magnus: Robot Fighter" from writer Fred Van Lente and artist Cory Smith. Things continue in April with "The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor," written by Mark Waid and an artist to be announced, followed by "Solar: Man of the Atom" in May from "Five Ghosts" writer Frank Barbiere, also with an artist to be named.

And apparently they have a couple more properties within the deal under wraps (presumably one could be Mighty Samson).sbcomics wrote:Update on what's happening with the Gold Key stuff from NYCC:

I would bet more on Dagar the Invincible and Tragg and the Sky Gods, since those properties are actually part of the Doctor Spektor family.leonmallett wrote: And apparently they have a couple more properties within the deal under wraps (presumably one could be Mighty Samson).

Re: Gold Key characters
After all this time would they still need permission considering the license is elsewhere? Presumably some part of any profit would go to the rights owners?StarBrand wrote:Elveen wrote:Brother Darque wrote:Valiant should at least publish the 90's Solar Man Of The Atom, Magnus Robot Fighter, & Turok Dinosaur Hunter in the Valiant masters hardcovers.

If the latter is true (admittedly pure supposition here), then could a non-licensed VH1 reprint be more profitable than something with the GK3 unless volumes were sufficiently higher for GK-related material than for original VALIANT books?
