eBay be crazy
There needs to be sociological studies done on the psychology of eBay auctions. Why do people sometimes bid 4-5 more than the average price of recently completed auctions?

*SQUEE* your science, I have a machine gun.

Re: eBay be crazy
Lost another auction. So far there has only been one auction I regretted that I didn't win. Why do people bid so much for stuff? It's ridiculous.

Re: eBay be crazy
I've often wondered about that myself. Maybe they consider it a challenge to win something over someone else regardless of the price. The really annoying people are the bidding "peckers" who keep bidding like twenty times in the same auction. It's like they have no clue what something is worth, but they know that they will pay one dollar more than you...
I've found myself looking for BIN's more often these days and usually pay the same amount or less, rather than try and win a bidding war and find a bargain.

Re: eBay be crazy
I have frequently thought that many of the bids have been increased by NOT AT ALL PROXY bidders.

I had actually forgotten that people did that. That probably factors in somewhat.

Sure. Haven't you ever noticed the multiple bids on an auction - all VERY close to one another, but slowly pushing up the bids?lorddunlow wrote:kevinbastos wrote:I have frequently thought that many of the bids have been increased by NOT AT ALL PROXY bidders.

Re: eBay be crazy
I'm always amazed at the people bidding well above cover on trades and hardcovers that are still in print and can be ordered frm Amazon or bought at your LCS. I guess some buyers from outside the U.S. may not have the same access and are bidding that high. Or the "winning" thing.

I've found this to be true on some video games as well. I'll look for a new copy of something on ebay and then check Amazon. A lot of times Amazon will have new copies for what used are selling for on ebay.dbngaa wrote:I'm always amazed at the people bidding well above cover on trades and hardcovers that are still in print and can be ordered frm Amazon or bought at your LCS. Re: eBay be crazy
So the current trend I'm seeing (looking at older ASM issues) is that nice copies or CGC copies go for similar amounts (high) consistently, but the not-so-great copies go for almost as much. For instance, a copy of ASM #121 (Death of Gwen Stacy - do I have to spoiler tag that?) that had the cover taped together and had color touch and a ton of other restoration, and basically still looked like a toddler played with it for a week, went for more than half the price raws in the VG/F range were going and about a 1/6 of the price of a CGC 8.5. Why not just pay the extra money for the good ones? I have no problem having ragged copies in my collection, but I'm not paying $80+ for a taped together, written all over, tears and pieces missing crap.
I'll just be patient. I've seen a couple go that I felt I should have bid on, but overall I don't regret anything I've lost. Definitely makes me wish I had several boxes of crap to sell on ebay. I really need to try to get some crap at flea markets. You could really make a lot doing that, and then I could turn around and buy nice copies.

I'm inclined to think the highest bid is bogus.

And now that the market has been set, here's someone attempting to cash in on the new, higher price.
