Editing errors

Post by tchalla8 »

So I know along the way VEI has made some editing errors. The one that jumps out to me is the last page of Bloodshot #4 where the Pulse and Kara dialogue got switched. The cool thing is they fixed this for the trade.

Someone mentioned one from Harbinger Wars that got fixed as well. Anyone know what that was?

What others editing errors do you guys remember?

(And this is not to harp on VEI....mistakes happen. Was just curious what others have been discovered along the way)

A couple i can think of off the top of my head

Shadowman - Jack calls the waitress Alafair when her name was Anne. JJ corrected this by making her name Anne Alafair

Harbinger Wars - issue 4, stronghold was mixed up a couple of times with Ion.

Also issue 1 of HW, the male Zygos twin calls out for Maggie even though Katherine was his sister

I think the latest issue of BS and HC has a mistake with Granite and the number of kids she has

Probably more but can't think of them right now
Ha! Yeah! Nice! Any of those dudes in your head mosh?! - Flamingo

A&A #3: Armstrong's satchel disappears for a page. Obie grabs it off him, and then is punched. We don't see it on the next page, but it returns the page after that. You could argue artistic license on this, but it affected the read the first time through. I was sure that Obie had dropped it off of the scaffolding when he was hit.
If you're not a *SQUEE*, you're okay with me.

Wasn't there an AA cover where the scratches on Gilad's face were reversed? I looked in the covers section but didn't see it.

I think it's his very first appearance in X-O where they're a different direction.

And do you remember what Dino told us when we met in his office? I'm guessing they abandoned that idea. And rightfully so.

Oh, alright. See, since Gilad is immortal he does this trick where he's able to rip off his face and put it back on inside out. After awhile he appears normal again but the scars are reversed.

You do believe me, right? :kidaround:

I just remembered another one. On page 19 of Bloodshot #13 the right arm is blown off compared to the left arm in the previous two panels on page 18.

I've noticed dozens of pronoun issues like this in all of the issues over the past month or two.

Like how does this *SQUEE* get past the editor and go to printing. I love Valiant and everything they are doing but with the printing issues and this... well its just a little bit of a letdown. Im not dropping any books but I hope they get their act together.

Yeah, I don't understand how basic english gets by the proofreader. When I have a marketing piece that I need to have proofread I. Have. My. Wife. Read. It. Back. To. Me. Word. By. Word. Out. Loud. Period.

The out loud is the important part because when read silently, your brain will fill stuff in so that it seems to make sense when it really doesn't.

Exactly! Just like those pics that go around on Facebook, E-mails, ect. that say if you can read this you are smart. Well I can understand a mistake or TWO in a NOVEL! But a comic that might have enough dialog to fill a one page essay that is double spaced should have NONE!!!..... Enough said! :!:

It's not just VEI. Chew had a pronoun error, Infinity #2 had an error, as did Avengers #19. Happens all the time. Doesn't really bother me, but it does stick out like a sore thumb. I blame the letterererers

It's extremely common. I mostly read trades except for VALIANT, so its probably even worse if I notice them in there when editorial has had a second look. Drives me crazy as I am a total grammar Nazi.

The current Gilad is from a mirror universe where everything is exactly the same as this one but reversed. The original Gilad met his double in the Faraway (there's actually just one Faraway connected to all universes), had an adventure together, and then decided to swap places. You see, sometime after Gutenberg invented the printing press and the printed word became more ubiquitous, Gilad discovered he was dyslexic. So swapping places with his doppelganger was a win-win.

Those Facebook things are meant to be simple enough that you'll add a comment, thereby making the page that shared it seem more relevant. It's basically search manipulation.

It's a really bad time to be a proofreader or copy editor. Most companies don't want to pay for them. Same goes for writers.

Well the pictures still prove a point that if you proof read something you can miss simple mistakes because are brains will see the word as it is meant to be in that sentence. It helps a lot more to read out loud to catch those mistakes. I don't know the biz aspect of the proof reading or editing but i know I haven't noticed many and i read every book. More then 2 times each! I just found out that i missed some so really its not that big a deal. I just want to be able to say that these are great works in american literature/comics but if there are writing errors that really looks bad on them. I hope for the Hardcover collections they iron out all the errors and make sure they don't appear in future issues.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one getting hung up on the typos. I try to let it slide, but it really pulls me out of the moment that the artists are trying so hard to create. Come on, editors!
