The two shops I visit (sister stores out of 6 in the area) are very well-run, but liberal and open in their opinion of the industry. They give a lot of obscure companies (Oni, Boom, Titan, etc.) shelf space in addition to all the usual suspects.kevinbastos wrote:My LCS just read through his upcoming stuff, and looked at his pulls of six gun gorilla, and mentioned, "It's a travesty that is so low..."jmatt wrote: (just added Astro City and someone talked me into a mini called Six Gun Gorilla)

Currently buying every digital issues, every variant (that I can find), every TBD and every HC.
I'll drop some of the duplicates before I drop any of the series.

Re: After Unity have to start dropping titles
I have to admit, I have not read it yet but it came highly recommended. It's a six parter, I figure I'll get 'em all and read it back to back. I'd like to read VEI that way too but I can't bring myself to wait.kevinbastos wrote:My LCS just read through his upcoming stuff, and looked at his pulls of six gun gorilla, and mentioned, "It's a travesty that is so low..."jmatt wrote: (just added Astro City and someone talked me into a mini called Six Gun Gorilla)

I still remember the long years when there were no new books released, and just wishing for new stories .As long as there isn't too many 1:50 or above variants out too often.I will try my best to buy all the variants and issued released.
If I just can't be me ,and the Arrow isn't enough.. then maybe I should be Ra's al Ghul

In contrast I picked up A&A 12 after reading the reviews but it only confirmed why I dropped it in the first place! Apparently Armstrong can now pick up trees and hurl them into the sky, he's THAT strong? Ivar is released from some sort of suspension chamber and immediately makes reference to the goat from Q&W!? Armstrong can also be propelled into the sky after said spaceship yet his hat stays on!? 'Comedy' over cohesive story telling and poor attention to detail riddles that book!

Anyway, Shadowman 10 was good!

Re: After Unity have to start dropping titles
I have read everything so far (except Q&W), and have been enjoyed X-O and A&A the most. I liked how the H.A.R.D. Corps were done in the Harbinger Wars, so we'll see how that goes. I see no reason as of yet to drop anything from my VE1 reading list ( well, maybe Shadowman...); though the majority of my collection push is still Pre-Unity VH1. I just got the entire VH1 Unity cross-over raw-book so that the kids could read it.

Is the new Astro City good? The last few (well many years) I think AS has not been good. I actually disliked The Dark Ages.

DCBS has a Valiant special every month for 50% off when you buy the bundle of all Valiants for a given month. The bundle was $15.96 this month with 8 titles. Monthly shipping is a flat $6.25 so even with shipping you're saving close to $10 against cover. If it weren't for DCBS I wouldn't read new comics at all.

Re: After Unity have to start dropping titles
All that being said, though even at $1.99 each Bloodshot, Archer and Armstrong, and Shadowman are dangerously close to being dropped unfortunately. I'm waiting to see where the new writer takes Bloodshot as I've never been a fan of Swierczynski. I've given him a lot of tries (I tried Cable, Godzilla, Judge Dredd and Bloodshot) and I've just never been able to get into his stuff. Shadowman I'm doing my best to get into, but while i was one of the biggest critics early on I was kind of excited to see where Jordan took the book after speaking with him personally at Heroecon. We'll see how Milligan does. Archer and Armstrong is puzzling to me. It's not a bad book, but I never really care about where it goes. The art is tremendous consistently, but I find myself having to constantly re-read the previous couple of issues to remember what's going on. Just not memorable. Not like X-O or Harbinger where I think about the story constantly in anticipation of tearing into the next issue. I haven't felt that way about comics in a long time. X-O Manowar and Harbinger (along with TMNT and Daredevil) are the best books on the stands nowadays and Quantum and Woody looks like it's well on it's way to joining those ranks.Tim wrote:DCBS has a Valiant special every month for 50% off when you buy the bundle of all Valiants for a given month. Re: After Unity have to start dropping titles
I've picked up all the TPB's, able to find em on eBay for $6. So I'm
Saving a bit, but there's the con side of waiting four or five months for an arc to end so they
Can put it in TPB form. Although it allows me to pick up a different title
I normally wouldn't read ( A&A) and keep up with it. My big concern of the moment is
The Harbinger Wars collection, HW tpb comes out this week, but I'm curious on how I'm gonna
Have to read it, since I believe the original reading order was HW, then Harbinger and then bloodshot
And then back to HW #2 etc. Wondering if Valiant is gonna collect the 4 HW in the tpb or print the first
4 issues of the entire arc in the Tpb ( ie HW 1, H11, BS 10, HW 2)

Re: After Unity have to start dropping titles
I read the original way back when, maybe the first 20 issues or so until I got out of the hobby. It could well be that later issues weren't quite as good. But I think these first few of the newer series are as good as what I've read, so make of that what you will.Elveen wrote:Is the new Astro City good? But I can't have this conversation without saying that I think Astro City 1/2 was probably the best single comic book I have ever read. Just absolutely haunting and melancholy. I was almost in tears at the end.

For sure, early Astro City is among the best the medium has ever produced.
Vol #1 and Vol #2 are brilliant. When it gets into the mini series...... not so much. Local heroes was ok, Dark Ages is not good. Some of the 1 shots are good; the Samaritan one is real good. I just thought that there is a new Astro City book and I thought that is what you were reading.

Well, the stuff I've recently bought is issues #1 - #4 and recently released. So I think there is a new book.Elveen wrote:jmatt wrote:I read the original way back when, maybe the first 25 issues or so until I got out of the hobby. Re: After Unity have to start dropping titles
I suppose I'm rather fortunate because Marvel and DC tend to cancel titles I add to my pull list. It means I can buy more Valiant and Image titles, though.
If I really had to drop a Valiant title to save money I'd just abstain from the new titles like Eternal Warrior or Unity since I know that it would be hard to give up after I'd read an issue.

Since I have completely dropped all Marvel titles, i still have some room for VEI to grow before I have to start thinking about dropping titles. Although Shadowman would probably be first on the list.
But right now its pretty cool to read every book in the new universe.

I stopped buying all the variants for every title. I also dropped a bunch a Marvel Now titles that I was disappointed in. I'll just read those in the Marvel Digital Unlimited app whenever there added. I am looking forward to the Valiant Deluxe Hardcovers and the bonus material.

Re: After Unity have to start dropping titles
I'm still buying the whole VU as typically an order from DCBS can keep them cheap as they are normally bundled together. However, my collection is a mess with no uniformity across issues regarding which cover or variants I have. It's incredibly frustrating. Also, I haven't actually read my comic book order in like three months, and before that I've only read Archer and Armstrong. So.basically I haven't actually read the VU at all since just after the line started, but I'm still ordering the books.
Believe it nor not the variants really took my interest away because they are so prolific. Then I thought I'd go 100% on the Universe maybe through issue 6 or 12 of each title, and then when that fell apart I just lost interest in reading the titles. So, soon I'll sit down and read basically the whole Universe, title by title here in the next few weeks and then cut titles from there depending on how they go.

Re: After Unity have to start dropping titles
Adding Unity will be a tight squeeze. If it comes down to dropping any Valiant titles, Shadowman and Q+W would be the first ones to go.
But DC has done me a favor by *SQUEE* me off, I don't like the direction of the New 52 and they cancelled the Legion. I will not buy, read, nor support any DC until the Legion returns.
With Marvel, I'm still reading my favorite individual titles like DD, Thor, and Iron Man. Also reading Battle of the Atom X-Men event which, thankfully, doesn't last too long.
But when Stan Sakai re-starts Usagi Yojimbo again in a few months, something on the list will have to give.

Re: After Unity have to start dropping titles
Like others here said I will drop other publishers before any Valiant. I just dropped the 2 DC titles I was getting to make way for new Valiant titles. Saga might be the only non-Valiant I would have trouble dropping. I am concerned about number of Valiant titles though because my comic closet is getting full.
