So, I spent the last couple of hours pulling all the books and getting them ready to be packed and shipped.

First, something that I forgot to mention, we got 3 signatures on these, Atom, Dinesh and Asmus.

I was a little disappointed in how these came back, Valiant books in general are harder to get in good shape and this was the first time that we did not get all 9.8s. We got some 9.6 and even a few 9.4s. Most Ryan Sook covers were 9.8 so everyone gets at least one of the books in 9.8. The good thing is that we sent in extra books to make sure we are covered. About half of the people get both 9.8 and the rest get one 9.8 and one 9.6. This was done, as promised, in the order they were paid for.

I was not able to make matched grade sets, for two reasons:

1. Everyone except 2 people ordered sets of 2 books
2. All copies of one book were 9.8, while only half of the other were 9.8.

A few international members will receive an email on monday with the amount to pay for shipping, as we did not charge it for some international orders.

I have one 9.6 Set available, and 3 copies of the Martin cover, all 9.4s. Please contact me by PM if interested. I will give a really good price for 9.4s of course.

We should be able to get them shipped out on Monday-Wednesday.

Well looks like I might get the short end of the stick on this. Ordered 2 sets, but wasn't able to pay until late so Both mine should be split 9.8/9.6.

If anyone would like to sell their 9.8 from the one that comes in 9.6, or their set, or downgrade their copy to a 9.6 and trade/sell me their 9.8 etc, or any other option to help me get a 9.8 for a complete set, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure that anyone is getting a short end of a stick here. Valiant comics are hard to get in 9.8s because of the way they are. That's why my initial post was so careful to describe how I would deal with it in the case of receiving lower grades. i personally am stuck with a few 9.4s that I have to sell cheap now, because I had to order much more books to make sure and give you guys the best chance of getting good grades. And, you are getting 2 more books that are way more valuable than the reg. #1s, and both are 9.8s, so that's something amazing, as those were in incredibly lower supply at the signing.

I can find out tomorrow where the cut off was for the 9.8 matched sets. This way if someone wants to trade, they can do it before shipping. but that will delay shipping by a day. I will try to do it early enough where you guys can work something out. I will not post it publicly here but I can give Aram the list of people who are getting matched sets and he can contact them privately.

Honestly when i announced sets, I assumed most people would get one or the other, but the actual ratio was 16 to 2, with 16 people getting both covers, and 2 getting the one cover that we got all 9.8s on, so it did not matter.

Didn't the census guy pick out the best copies? Seems like you did all you could.

My LCS has even noticed the poor shape of the Valiant comics. He puts aside the best copies for me, but there are some common defects. I've found the following:

1. Vertical cover crease. It often spans the entire cover. Sometimes every issue seems to be affected in my shop.

2. Internal top crease. Many issues have this diagonal crease in the top-middle of the book, measuring 2-3 inches. When my LCS owner mentioned how bad they are, all the copies that I pulled from the shelf to show this problem had it. In my view, it's the worst defect.

3. Cover misalignment. It's common for the cover to be off on 1 or 2 sides by a millimeter or two. I don't mind it when it's just the right side, but it's odd on when it's the top and left.

4. Spine Creases. These seem to be pretty common on this book.

5. Chipping. This seems to be an uncommon defect, but I've noticed it on some of the variants where a piece is "chipped" from the spine. It takes a M book to F in my view. I've had a few returns to Midtowncomics because of it.

This is just my experience with the 300-400 VEI comics I own. I'm not sure if there's geographic differences or if shops that buy bigger quantities get better stock since there might be less handling. Still, I wouldn't think that would account for problems 1-3 above.

Because of the problems, I've resigned myself to not having a M VEI collection. I can't even get M copies at my store. At best, I may have a VF+ to NM+ collection.

The books were chosen by the CGC person from a stock of about 100-150 of each cover, before the signing. He is very good at picking copies, has always done it for us. But he can only pick out of the stock we have which depends on printers, distributors...

As far as money, yeah, obviously it does not take $139 to grade 2 books. The money went to cover the cost of the Q&W signing which cost quite a bit, with 3 employees working and snacks,drinks,... I am always honest about the fact that we are a business first, but i always try to give members here a very good value for their money. Unity is next, and it's going to be awesome!

I just meant short end of the stick for me personnally with my own very personal investment in this event, 20 hours driving time, stacks of books, sleep deprivation for a weekend, wallet deprivation etc.

That just motivated me to try to do what I can to get a 9.8 set since I was so close to getting one, thats the only reason why I bought 2 sets, to up my chances. In the end though I could have bought 20 more and it have changed anything. I was just unfortunate to not have the funds in time to pay for my order early enough.

I am actually very surprised they graded as high as they did. I personally looked them over with the cgc guy as well and we were both in agreement that most could easily go either way on the grading.

I originally was only in it for the sigs.. Didn't think twice about the grades after making my order or up until now...

Until... I found out that my 1:20 and 1:50 Variants that I was able to have signed before all the others also are apparently all 9.8 and this one little 9.6 is the only thing standing between me and a perfect set of all 4 covers! They are something I plan to never part with.. ergo why I'm willing to go the extra mile for a little upgrade.

Though I'm still in shock that my 1:50 and 1:20 got 9.8s.. Part is still saying.. yeah right.. I'll believe it when I see it.

hey everyone,

if you still have not received your QW cgc deal, there is a reason for it. We have hit a problem that I need to resolve before I ship any more orders out. It has to do with a 9.8 book that was damaged, and the damage did not get noticed until we went to pack the item. I am working with CGC to replace it, and have not shipped any others out because it's unfair that the one person got a random bad luck of getting the damaged one (which we did not notice 'cause they come bagged from Cgc). we'll be dealing with it head on tomorrow.

I received my books today. I'm a little bummed my pullbox cover was only 9.6 but still happy overall.

Looking at the Martin Pullbox cover the only thing I can see that makes it a 9.6 vs. 9.8 is that the cover isn't perfectly centered. If you flip it over you can see how the cover angles to the right from the top. To me the book looks like a 9.8.

Everyone except for one member should be receiving their sets shortly, all have been shipped out as of last week.

One person will have to wait extra to have a 9.8 set re-slabbed by Cgc who sent them damaged. We picked the last person who would get a 9.8 and that is the one that got held back.
