"We're going for something that combines the high-drama aspects of a darker mainstream book with the post-punk weird and psychologically edgy qualities of Vertigo," says Milligan, the former scribe of Hellblazer, Shade, The Changing Man and Justice League Dark.
He reveals that his first arc will attempt to dig up some dirt, dislodge some skeletons and find out what's really going on with this new Shadowman.
"I'm not throwing everything out with the bath water — I'm just making the bath water a bit more grimy and, hopefully, unpleasant," Milligan explains. "Something is wrong with Jack and to find out what it is, he'll need to face some terrible truths about himself and make some big changes in his life."
The Shadowman writer also wants to "recalibrate" the way Jack interacts with the otherworldly Deadside, which houses all manner of supernatural creatures: "Going to the Deadside shouldn't be like popping out to the grocery store to buy a pint of milk. This is a scary and difficult place, and it imposes a terrible price. Just what this price is is something Jack — and we — learn in my first arc."

Just the interview sounds like Milligan has a good handle on the character. Looking forward to this. Hope they don't change his look too much 'cause I'm at work on my Halloween costume.

looks like slight changes to the design ... more gritty feel to it
Shadowman symbol now in the middle of the chest ... which I think is more appropriate

Yes!
de la Torre is who I was hoping would be the new ongoing artist!
Milligan's take on Jack sounds great.
and they are making Shadowan's look a little less superhero-y...

I like the new suit, but I think the emblem would look better off to the side.

The costume looks less like a costume and more like a dark entity that has attached itself to Jack
and the shadowman emblem in the middle of the chest is more appropriate and symbolic of what that image represents, imo. Its the symbol of the Loa and its the center of what makes Shadowman tick. Off to the side ... never seemed right to me. it seems less relevant ..
I wonder how they will explain the new look. Obviously the look can change depending on the person ... Maybe Jack is changing therefore the look changes ... or the loa is becoming more powerful and shaping the look for him

W O W.
M I L L I G A N ! ! !
i'm very, very glad AND excited about this choice.
milligan's work can be fantastic, if he sticks to his more dark- and/or weirdo-stuff like shade, x-statix and hellblazer. his superhero stuff, on the other hand, is pretty lame. but from the interview, i get that he gets what has to be done on shadowman. i'm pretty sure, this will give the book the substance it clearly lacked since the relaunch (except for the zero issue, of course).
finally a book that could defy harbinger as valiant's best book!
also, really love it, that two former vertigo writers are at valiant now. i think it's a very good sign and shows that vei is directing their books more into a mature/non-conformist direction.

Re: New Shadowman creative team
I said a while back that I'd prefer Shadowman to be closer on the scale to the Vertigo end of the comic book world so the plans Milligan has in place sound v promising! In addition, the choice of ongoing artist seems a smart move too. Ill be picking this series back up to see what the new team can do!

Re: New Shadowman creative team
I'm a bit surprised by this and a bit bummed since I loved the previous writer. Is this something that was expected or is this completely out of left field?
I love Shadowman and just want what's best for the title, people seen to like Milligan so I hope he can make this book even better than it is and add something to an already awesome story.

I like the costume, but it doesn't look any less super-hero-y to me. It looks like Black Daredevil in some ways.
Still, thumbs up! I've only read X-Statix, so I'm not schooled on Milligan, but given his history he seems like the perfect choice!

It's been an uneven series for Valiant, and they wanted to shake it up a bit and inject some life into it.retrovideogameaddict wrote:I'm a bit surprised by this and a bit bummed since I loved the previous writer. Is this something that was expected or is this completely out of left field?

Re: New Shadowman creative team
This sounds like a major improvement. The second arc, while an improvement story-wise, was a cluster *SQUEE* artistically and was obviously wrapped in a hurry leaving a lot wanting. Milligan has the pedigree for a supernatural/occult series, which is what this book should have been from the beginning. RDLT is the perfect artist for the book.
I'm feeling so-so about the redesign. I think VEI probably doesn't want to be too extreme in changing the look this early, but understood it needed tweaking. IMHO I like the design in the center, but it needs to be larger. I do think its an improvement, though, and better suits the tone of the book. It also may lead to more changes down the line.

This is a good point, what is the 'supposed' purpose of Shadowman's emblem from a story perspective (as opposed to being a marketing tool for the character)?MarrowMan wrote:TBH I don't think he even needs the emblem, he IS the emblem. But whatever.
