3M art sold on ebay

Post by AnthonyF »

Check out these Unity and pre-Unity 3M production pages!
(read descriptions carefully, they are not color art...)

You think they are selling at decent prices?

3M's are basically a high quality copy of the comic page (same size) - right?

That's correct.

3M pages are printed on a thick, glossy page, same size as the final.

There is no original art on them, but they are basically one-of-a-kind proof pages in the production process.

For Valiant art (interior pages) and production "one-of-a-kind" items, there are generally five types.

1) Preliminary pencils
- rough drawing of a page in pencil
- normally unfinished backgrounds, less detail
- used to test layouts or as a first draft
- may not exist, or may have been trashed as "practice"

2) Original inked art
- the final page with inks only, no colors, usually inked over original pencils
- generally a thick page, standard comic art board (blue lined, Valiant markings, or Marvel for early Valiant pages)
- may have glued word bubbles (empty) or glued art corrections/adjustments, glue often discolors page after 20+ years
- may have areas with white-out (usually corrections, but sometimes art is white-out on black ink)
- pencils and erased pencils are sometimes still visible "underneath" ink or around edges
- usually larger than the final page, 8x12 up to 14x19 for a single page

3) Original colored art
- Valiant used a watercolor process (pre-digital) where a copy of the inks was colored by hand
- usually has clear overlay with dialogue/story text on paper glued on
- often has the editor's approval sheet with check marks, signed initials, notes
- usually larger than the final page but smaller than inks, about 8x12

4) 3M production pages
- glossy photo-paper pages actual size of final page, about 7x10.5
- usually has clear overlay with text/dialogue printed on the clear
- no original artwork (ink or colors)

5) Uncut, unstapled, folded comic, also called a "make-ready"
- the final comic book (or cover) before trimming and stapling
- white edges and printer color bar marks often visible
- may open up to show the full (perforated) sheet, or multiple sheets, about 24x24 to 48x48 inches
- when folded is still larger than the final comic by the width of the untrimmed border
- sometimes a few are made (from 1 to 5), but these are often trashed soon after approval

Another item that isn't "one-of-a-kind", but is rare and unfinished from the production process:

Chromium cover flat, unfolded/unstapled, about 10x14
- up to 200 of these were made by Valiant for each full chromium book as giveaways/souvenirs of the 1993 (and 1994) chromium cover process

This is a shorter list than Magnusr's excellent reference here: http://www.valiantfans.com/forum/viewto ... ?f=17&t=36" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm primarily listing the things that turn up most often on Ebay.

For current Valiant books, art may consist of original pencils and inks, or possibly pencils only, with inks and colors being done digitally

Bit surprised how high those two went. Still, it is rare items. But I picked up a page of "real" color art from him for less.

The page number shown is interesting. I assume these are the test prints for the TPB. There is another page where it is shown that they change the name of Sniper. I wonder if that corresponds to the original issue or the TPB?

That's what I was wondering. Could the same 3M be used for both?

Some of the prints have 2 page numbers, maybe from the original, and then the TPB. But I checked my X-O trade, and the page numbers don't correspond.

I was surprised as well. I need to sell the 3m I've got and retire.
