EBay....
Why are there so few auctions? Everyone list their books as BIN for to much $.
How r we supposed to find the fair value of books if everyone is waiting for the desperate collector?

Byproduct of a very shaky market. If it isn't red hot auctions are a big risk.

Pretty much what CKB said. Also the fact that their policies have been so hostile against sellers, many of the good ones I used to know that list in auction formats have already left for greener pastures.

Buy it now fees are now the same as auction fees. So most sellers assume you can control the price a bit more. What else do you guys think?

I haven't been a eBay seller for ... 8 years? I just returned to list a bunch of items. Seems like no listing fees and only final value fees? So why are auctions riskier? I'm sure I am missing something. FVF sure seem crazy. Once you've paid those, PayPal fees ... quite steep.

Ebay just doesn't seem to have the traffic that they used to have thanks to the idiotic leadership of JD. So unless the item or book you're selling is extremely hot, there is a high risk that someone can get it for cheap. Also when the item sells, you better pray that the buyer is happy with it. Otherwise if they open up a case against you or start making unreasonable demands, you better be ready to bend over to get that reaming.R Daneel wrote:I haven't been a eBay seller for ... 8 years? I think this is part of it and really the economy is just truely that bad where there are not nearly as many people with money to throw away. I also collect MIB Vintage Star Wars items, and before 2008, I had truley a hard time to find certain items for a reasonable price or in the condition requirement for my collection. Now, I had no trouble finding most of the stuff and at reasonable prices.

Re: EBay....
I've been an eBay buyer and seller since 1997. Since 1998-99, I've been hearing "it's not the same" comments from users. It's really just a marketplace. The policies have changed, but at the end of the day, it's still the best place to find odd stuff.
Right now, it's relatively a buyer's market. In 2006-07, it was a great seller's market. I knew it wouldn't last, so I sold a ton of stuff. When the economy tanked in 2008, it was a great time to buy, and buy I did. Of course, my interests have changed, so I've offloaded stuff even though I could probably get more next year.
I assembled a respectable VE1 collection in 2002-03 for a pittance of what the items are selling for now. In my view, I'm paying more for these items than I have since Wizard was new. However, if you bought during the Acclaim relaunch, you might have had a different experience. It all depends on your viewpoint.
I also feel like a majority of the items are listed as buy-it-now items. It's totally anecdotal, but I think the number of items on eBay has grown, and it has less to do with less deals and items, and more to do with the fact that there are free listings. Those couch sellers who decide they will only sell their VF copy of Magnus 25 for $20 seem to have proliferated once they knew they could list 50 of them for free. It isn't costing them anything (except time), and once they win, they win big.

Re: EBay....
That is what I worry about. I've sold both of my pebbles for a premium and I am worried that buyers will just claim something crazy. I mean there is NOTHING stopping someone from saying "ummm where is my item you only sent me a box with a couple rocks in it that weighed the expected amount." They get their refund, I am out my $300. I guess that is where you are careful who you sell to but that is in no way foolproof. *crossfingers*Escaflown4 wrote:Ebay just doesn't seem to have the traffic that they used to have thanks to the idiotic leadership of JD. Re: EBay....
eBay's become a buyers market. I've found nice deals on things.
I've also gotten to work with so many sellers first on eBay.. then later on outside eBay. Saves fees and passes on the savings to the buyers... I buy more than I sell

It looks pretty sharp, might have a shot at a 9.8 which is nearly a $500 book.

Re: EBay....
What do you do in this instance, take pictures of packing the item? There's still a lot of sellers selling big-ticket items. On the topic of auctions, I've always used BINs, because in Canada it takes longer for me to sell because I'm buried on the ebay.com site.R Daneel wrote:That is what I worry about. Re: EBay....
I sell on ebay a good amount and I will tell you why I list the majority of my items as BIN instead of in auction format.
1.
2. You only get so many free listings per month. BIN listings run for 30 (max)days at a time, while auction style listings run for 7 days max. This effectively makes an auction 4 times as expensive as a BIN even if you are using the free listings, it will cost you four of those to have an item run for a month. again, unless the item is hot, you could have it sit on ebay for a month or more before it sells.
3. sometimes sellers want the cash right away. If I want to sell something fast, and I have a pretty good idea what the market price is for it is, I will list it as a BIN so I don't have to wait a week, or a week and a half if the buyer is slow to pay, to get my money. of course every time I sell something within a day of listing it, I always wonder if I should have priced it higher.
1.
This is totally true. not only is this true in a shaky market, it's also true if someone else has the same book ending around the same time as yours. All the attention can fall on the other auction while your book sells for 30% less.ckb wrote:Byproduct of a very shaky market. If it isn't red hot auctions are a big risk.
