I was busy this weekend and didn't get to read this issue till last night. Really enjoyed it. JJ doing a great job of setting up the action and fleshing out Master Darque and his twisted vision ... and the deadside scenes are *SQUEE* awesome ... RDLT killed it again! Can't wait for a full on RDLT issue! :thumb:

Just a couple of critiques

I was hoping to see more insight on what happened to Sandria (i know issue #10 will be a big one for this but still I was hoping to be teased a bit by Sandria this issue) and also 2 issues in a row of no Dr. Mirage ... i was hoping to see something about her - A little bit of back story/character development.

Another issue I have is that the main premise of this arc seems to be the same as the 1st arc ... Master Darque trying to make his way to our world and Shadowman has to stop him. Part of that is definitely awesome because I love Master Darque as a character and I love his origin story and I know it directly ties into Shadowman ..etc ... but it also feels a little redundant. I was hoping Baron Samedi and/or Dr. Mirage would shake it up a bit and their origin and storyline can interweave into this storyline more ..but both characters (especially Mirage) seems to be taking a bit of a back seat.

Overall, a really enjoyed it. I would say besides Harbinger this is the comic I most look forward to reading every month because of the compelling mythology being built upon every month.

This issue I give a solid 7/10 :thumb:

Pretty good overall except for the flashback to establish this (what I'm now supposed to accept as) familial like connection between Dox and Jack that otherwise never existed. I realize its to add more emotional weight to the scene, but it just feels inorganic. We're 9 issues in and it shouldn't be this hard for me to buy that he cares about Dox. I think Jordan is now paying for the poor character development and sub par relationship building from early on. Had he paid attention to these relationships earlier this wouldn't feel out of left field.

If Jordan's trying to improve some early mishaps with this flashback I'd be cool with that though. As long as its pushing forward and aiming high Im cool. Also, I get Shadowman's job is to stop Darque, but if thats all the purpose is of the loa then the character might suffer whenever Darque isnt around. I mean Im assuming there will be storylines after this whole Darque business where Shadowman has to do other stuff. I guess its a bit early to tell though as maybe theres more to come about this. The mythology he's got going here is great yet I still feel as though I want to like it more than I actually do. I look forward to reading this more than any non Valiant book, but I still think it can improve a bit.

Just read this issue today (didn't have time for an LCS run last week) and i have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. Not a fan of the art by Edwards but the pages by De La Torre are GREAT. VEI needs to figure out a way to make him the main artist on this book. The story itself seems to be improving as well, although still not a favorite for me. Looking forward to the next issue.

I was pleasantly surprised by Shadowman. Master Darque's insight into his motivations behind his plans was very good and the Eaters are downright creepy. The three different art styles can be jarring, but I think it served the story well here. De La Torre's art especially was great at visualizing the nether-realm of Deadside.

It does what every good horror/supernatural comic should do, be eerily disturbing yet make you unable to look away.

It's true, the book is definitely on the upswing.

Relationship building was on the back burner in the first arc as they (JJ+Zircher+Simmons) crammed in explaining the loa, mr. Twist, the cult of rich dudes worshiping Darque, Darque himself, dead side, the abettors, his dead parents, the history of the shadowman, etc....

They simply crammed too much into the first arc. Now JJ is taking a beat to establish some relationships between the allies. Does it feel late? Maybe. But better now than never. I need to believe that these people care about each other, to make sense of them risking their lives to protect each other.

The book is definitely improving, and I'm enjoying the ride.

RDLT is killing it on deadside, and Larosa drew the best Dox yet IMO.

Can't wait for the next issue!

Hey guys, I am way behind on my reading so I decided to start over AGAIN. Just read 1-8 in a sitting. Haven't been following the board much as life has gotten in the way and not in a good way. Anyhoo, I haven't had the time to read about why Zircher left but it's a bummer. Can anyone provide a link to the rumors and innuendo? :D Was really digging his stuff. I agree that the jump from artist to artist over the last couple issues has been jarring. Not liking Edwards art. It's not bad but it doesn't work at all on Shadowman. It seems cartoony almost. I am loving De La Torre though! I checked the previews of upcoming issues and noticed he is the only artist listed on issue 10. I'll cross my fingers that he stays on. Or I'll take LaRosa, everything I have seen from him has been top notch. Anyone have an artist rep for De La Torre?

Really liking the direction of the book and Jaunty and the Deadside. Never read the acclaim Shadowman except for the first issue maybe so the Deadside is new to me. I'm digging it. Kind of reminds me of the Constantine movie (never read the comic) and a little bit of Dark Dominion (Defiant). Only one issue I thought was weak, issue #6. Anyways keep up the good work Jordan, I'm on board for the long haul :thumb:

Oh and I thought it was fairly obvious that the girl on the Deadside was the same girl that visited Dr. mirage :P Definitely Armstrong in the photo, picked up on that immediately. Didn't notice Sandria, will have to go back and check it out. :thumb:

This book is improving all the time! Justin is building this book to something big and you can just feel it.

I'm now convinced that Roberto De La Torre is *thee* Shadowman artist. His art perfectly matches the dark tone set by Justin. This is exactly what the book needs. And no offense to the work of Neil Edwards but his art does not work for the tone of this book. Horror. That's what we need. More of RDLT and this book will continue its greatness. I should say Im not hating LaRosa's art here either.

As everyone has been saying, I think this title is moving in the right direction. I completely agree with Jonman on the art. Roberto De La Torre is the perfect artist for this title. I can't wait to see Sandria back and the continuation of issue #0.

Yep it seems Valiant took heed of the criticisms of this series and are trying to right the ship. Issue 10 should be a great continuation of what this book should have been all along - more in the vein of issue 0. Can't wait for issue 10. This book is really beginning to spread its wings a bit. Another example is shoring up RDLT for future issues. Valiant's got it covered and I'm not worried :)

Anothjer enjoyable issue, but then I am one of the few who think it has been a solid book from the start. yes it is improving, but i don't think it is from a low base.

Missing Zircher's art, but the art styles used in this issue felt right for each scene so I am cool with that. If long-term we see a lot of back and forth between earthside and Deadside, then maybe settling on two artists could be the way to go, to add some visual continuity, with a cleaner style for earth, and something more stylized for Deadside.
VEI - I look forward to you one day publishing MORE than 9-10 books per month

Same - I've been impressed with Shadowman since #1 (one of the best Valiant issues to date imo). Roberto De La Torre is perfect for this kind of book. Loving the art, also loved Zirchers too. The only complaint I have is re: Dr. Mirage. I though #5 and #6 were building towards establishing a nice supporting cast (Samedi is still around though) and then she's not seen. Hopefully she makes a return soon (as in #9!).

I'm wondering if we'll see her again next issue too.

When Shadowman and Samedi were discussing attacking Darque, Shadowman stated confidently "We're not alone", and at the time I had no idea what he meant by that, because aside from Samedi standing right next to him, there was no-one else there. But then, (I twigged it right away) the girl chasing the bunny was most definitely the girl that Mirage communicated with during her scene a few issues back. And then she was hidden by Jaunty... It all just make sense that there's something that happened between the panels where Jaunty hides her and Shadowman says "we're not alone" that we haven't seen yet: And as Shadowman starts fighting Darque's minions out in the open (without Samedi at his side) which leads us into the next issue, it also makes sense that we're going to see the culmination of the events that have happened inbetween times. And this is the perfect place for Samedi and Mirage's ghosts to intervene in Darque's plans, alongside Shadowman.

Having said that, it'll be interesting to see what happens, because at the current moment, there's been no suggestion that Mirage herself can travel into the Deadside...

Did anyone else realise that De La Torre had brought his bunny with him from Shadowman #0 into Shadowman #8??
