Quantum & Woody #1 Discussion

Post by grendeljd »

Thoroughly enjoyable issue. Great humour built into the character conflicts between the brothers & the way they react to life around them. I have only ever read the first issue of the original so I don't have any attachment to the previous incarnation, or any expectation levels. This is a quality piece of work all around.

Absolutely love Tom Fowler's art, the gestural style of his figures is awesome - and Jordie Bellaire's colouring is absolutely stunning over Toms drawings!

Solid. A lot of set up (which is understandable), and not a great deal of payoff, but still the set up was very good. Having not read the original I don't have any preconceived ideas about how this should go, so for me its working after just one issue.

And at the end after the explosion and they're sitting their naked with wristbands on I couldn't figure out where those came from. Then I went back and saw it. The bands were part of the protective suit they both ended up wearing half of! Very clever!

Good catch, I didn't even pick up on that! The one thing I knew about old Q&W was the bracelet thingie, I just assumed it happened somehow in the explosion.

I would have been disappointed if they had just come from nowhere. Little oversights like nag at me.

I'll admit that there were a lot more titles I would have liked to have seen Valiant put out BEFORE Quantum and Woody. But that was this morning, before I actually READ the book.

Very well done! Wasn't sure how the humour angle would play out, but I enjoyed every minute of reading this issue.

I read a good bit of the original series, never finished the whole thing. It was a while ago as well. I agree with the posts thus far, I was and remain skeptical of how Q&A fit into the larger whole of the VEI universe until we get a crossover.

It and Shadowman work on their own, in their own worlds that have been created around them but until the tone of each book is forced out of it's comfort zone and into a "shared universe" I won't be sold.

tonally, most of the VEI books work in their own voices with only Bloodshot and Harbinger having crossed paths. Fitting Q&A, A&A, Shadowman, X-O, Bloodshot and Harbinger into the same world is still a hard sell for me.
What we need is innovation and even revolution—but not so much in the form of marketing ploys and doohickeys. What is needed is bold creative vision, excellent stories, and brilliant storytelling, in a word, entertainment. -- Jim Shooter

Agreed. Q&W didn't feel like the VEI universe, but then again you have to establish your own before you fit in with the whole. I'll definitely give them the benefit of the doubt until they make the first attempt to merge.

There'll be plenty of time to get upset at how Q&W doesn't 'fit' the Valiant Universe when it doesn't 'fit' the Valiant Universe.

Whatever that means.

Jeez.

Great first issue, I was also confused about where the bands came from (I kinda figured they'd just touch on it next issue) glad to know it wasn't a mistake.

Hopefully by next issue we'll at least have a glimpse of the goat.

Personally, based on one read-through so far, I think these guys aren't going to have any trouble 'fitting in' to the VEI universe. In my opinion, all the best elements of the humour are purely character driven - the conflicts and absurdity all come from a serious difference in personality between Quantum & Woody. And each character felt believable to me, with very distinct personalities on opposite ends of the spectrum. There was not a moment while reading where I felt they were caricatures instead of characters.

Really enjoyable issue. I too have only read a handful of the original, but the first issue of that run ended in similar fashion with not much pay off. Overall great art from Fowler and a story that was surprisingly dramatic and emotional mixed with solid humor throughout. Really looking forward to this series now.

Like everyone's been saying, this was an enjoyable issue. Plenty of humor to go around and good, expressive art.

My problem with it, however, would be that this dynamic is one that we've seen done many times in other media. This is the first for Valiant's new line to feature such a dynamic however so it's just a minor complaint at the moment. Also, I'm glad Eric gets to be funny too. Because if Woody is always the funny one Eric will quickly become the serious tight *SQUEE*, and nobody ends up liking those characters as much. It's difficult to keep both funny rather than just having one character be the set up for punch lines and the other who delivers them and reap all the benefits and subsequently gets all the attention from fans. As long as there's a good balance this should work out though. So I'm hoping for slightly less of Eric being a tight *SQUEE* marine, because that dynamic with the funny carefree one gets old for me.

Also, though I enjoyed it I'm not sure this feels like it completely fits in VEI yet. I would have liked to see other characters introduced before Q&W. I mean we already have a buddy comedy in A&A. I would like to see an espionage type book first with Ninjak or possibly someone else. But I guess there's plenty of serious books in the Valiant line already. It's nice having a book every month to lighten the mood a bit.

Anyway, I'm pleased and interested to see where this goes. A solid 3.5/5 for me for this first issue.

I really liked the art in this issue. Seemed nice. Also, several "laugh out loud" moments, such as crashing the other funeral and the "that car is totally stolen" narration bit. Also like the narration in this, establishing themes for each moment of the book.

Preface for my comments: I haven't read any of the original series.

I enjoyed the book, but i actually thought the web comics were funnier. That being said,i thought Fowler's art is PERFECT for this book and i hope he sticks around at VEI a while! Can't wait to see his take on some of the other VEI character.

Good book, looking forward to more. Like the tone, reminds me pretty heavily of Archer & Armstrong.

I get you. As long as the titles (specifically Q&W) do not contradict each other, then it is very easy to assume that they are in the same universe. It's that simple.

I don't see why it is conflicting with the rest of the books--I think Archer & Armstrong especially establishes there is all kinds of wacky stuff going on in the Valiant universe. Two guys getting powers from a weird machine blowing up is not strange at all--we already saw that 10,000 years ago!

I never read the original .. but I'm wondering if they will incorporate some ties to the current valiant universe into the origin story..? Maybe the tech that Derek Henderson was working on (that gave Q&W their powers) was tech that they found in the faraway.. :hm:

I think this was a good opening issue. Asmus fleshed out the 2 main characters very well and with some genuinely funny moments. I liked the way the story unfolded with the flashback scenes. The art from Fowler was great ... really captured the attitude of the main characters. Impressive start ... can't wait for issue two.
A solid 8/10

I loved this issue. I didn’t think I would and was talked into getting it by the owner of my LCS, very glad I did! I’m hearing a lot of talk about Q&W not fitting in the Valiant U, but I think there is scope:

- Derek Henderson’s ‘Top Secret Research’ at Quantum Laboratories is a shadow corp for P.R.S which really controls things behind the scenes,

- P.R.S could send a crack team to hunt down Quantum and Woody (ala H.A.R.D Corps) to retrieve the enhanced duo for further experimentation of the Dynamo technology

- Not sure where Detective Cejudo fits in – at a stretch (though I wouldn’t want this) she could be a vine planting on earth who also wants the tech behind the formulation of the duo’s superpowers. Personally I see her evolving as a third wheel to Q&W and being a core member of the supporting cast

- Prometheus One could be a high ranking operative within P.R.S in control of the acquiring the assets, from the panel where he (looks to be a ‘he’), there is some resemblance to the guy who was leading Chainsaw (the group Bloodshot dismantled prior to HW). I know it’s not him but the overall feel to the panel was similar for me.

- Additionally, the women in that same panel have a logo on their costumes which resembles a sideways 8 – is that Sect related – yep it is, just checked the art advertising the Sect Civil War – what group does this symbolise? (I’m not fully caught up on A&A yet)

So I think Asmus has done enough to link this to the broader Valiant U.

I am very impressed by the start and cant wait to see what happens next. My only minor gripe is that this feels like an origin story ala #0 than #1. I quess a future #0 will focus more on Derek Henderson developing the tech and the actual drive behind producing the tech and subsequenlty what lead him to leave Quantum Labs...

Good catch ... Had to look closely to find that symbol on the uniform. The symbol is for infinity ... Which I don't think was the symbol for The Null sect from the last arc but I need to check further. What's interesting is that the symbol is actually what Kay - the Geomancer - saw when she looked at Archer. She sort of gets freaked out when he sees it. I assume it means that Archer has infinite amount of ability, power, possibilities .. It could also mean that perhaps this sect which worships the infinity will see Archer as its prophet. :hm:

I think I read one trade of the original series from the library about 8 years ago, so I had no attachment or preconceptions going in. I actually forgot to put it on my pull file but the people at my shop just stick anything Valiant related in there. Anyway -

Really enjoyed the first issue. Fowler is a great match for the style of this book - hope he sticks around for a while. Like others said, not sure how this will fit in to the larger picture but the introduction was more than enjoyable on its own. Another great launch from VEI.

While I was pleasantly surprised by how much I came to like this issue, I hope Asmus would ditch the blackout panels. Those panels were a carry over from the original series and they were used then to great comedic effect. Not so here. If he would go for a different kind of comedy, might as well not use the tools from the past.
