Asking Bob Layton for Valiant stuff
I'm going to be at the convention in Philly this weekend, and Bob Layton is going to be there. I'd like to ask him for a sketch on my flip books, but I don't know if that would upset him.
Any advice?

Re: Asking Bob Layton for Valiant stuff
As far as I know, Bob Layton is usually busy at conventions, so he might not have time, but he usually enjoys drawing the original X-O Manowar (and Iron Man
).

Re: Asking Bob Layton for Valiant stuff
I've talked to Bob at cons, he is usually busy but was open and willing to to talk about Valiant.
If you can get on his sketch list early you can probably get him to do a sketch.

Re: Asking Bob Layton for Valiant stuff
A while ago he had a commision section on his website, I just checked and it's no longer there
. No idea then if this impacts what he does durring a convention. Last i saw it was around $150 for a commision. Good luck and I hope you get one. I still kick myself for passing on the opportunity a few years ago.

Re: Asking Bob Layton for Valiant stuff
He had a limited 10 slot commision up on another website that I got in on. I sent in an XO blank and asked for old school XO full figure, I have not heard back of there being any issue with what I asked for.
I don't think he does this very often, they said he had to generate some income for an upexpected move.
I will post/update once I get it or a pic of it so all can see......

Met him in Columbus OH. He did an XO on the XO/Harbinger flip book. He could not do it at the convention, but he mailed it to me in about 3 weeks.

Ok, I'll ask him.
And hope he doesn't ask for $150

He did an awesome Solar sketch for me at last year's Boston Con. Don't remember the price. $100 I think?

Re: Asking Bob Layton for Valiant stuff
Layton has done a lot of nice Valiant sketches, commissions and cover recreations over the years.
I got a Magnus Robot Fighter #6 recreation done from him back in 2005.

Re: Asking Bob Layton for Valiant stuff
Bob charged me $100 to do a single figure sketch at the Boston ComicCon last year:

I'm sure he will do whatever you like if he has time! He was happy to talk about the old Valiant days. Signed a few XO and Rai 1s for me as well.

Re: Asking Bob Layton for Valiant stuff
Is $100 pretty much the going rate for a sketch from anyone?
I was thinking about buying a sketchbook for SDCC, but at $100 a pop, I don't know how many I will be able to get!
(Although I can completely understand the time and effort it may take to draw a nice sketch for someone!)

The days of the cheap sketch are over (Thanks, eBay).
I miss the days of $50 full on commissions and free quick sketches.

Re: Asking Bob Layton for Valiant stuff
When I met Bob in the 93-94 convention in Chicago, he was a great guy. I don't think $100-150 is asking too much for a super-quality sketch. Heck, I spent close to a GRAND on my Ninjak promo.
I know Q and Layton are different styles, but still.

Re: Asking Bob Layton for Valiant stuff
These were the current rates for the opp I got in on......
Bust $105 including CGC grading / return shipping
Fill figure $155 including CGC grading / return shipping
so it look like it would still be 100 if you just got the sketch directly from him at a con......
