Action Comics #1 Rare Find
A man found a copy of Action Comics #1 in the wall of a house he purchased for $10K. Why can't I get that lucky?

Eh, its Superman. Should have kept him the walls.

You guys need to hold your "I'm not a fan of Superman" comments until AFTER you see Man of Steel.
I mean... I wasn't a fan of Iron Man until 2008.
I've been waiting for an awesome Superman movie since Superman II.

Re: Action Comics #1 Rare Find
I actually read about this the other day and I am thinking either this guy did get really lucky or he's in cahoots with the auctioneers to make up the story to get free press/advertisement on the Internet. I don't doubt at all that folks back then would use cheap alternative for wall insulation like newspapers and comics, but how likely are you to find just one comic and it happens to be Action Comics #1 from tearing down a wall? Something just doesn't add up here...Intrepidxc wrote:A man found a copy of Action Comics #1 in the wall of a house he purchased for $10K. Why can't I get that lucky?

That's kind of what I thought as well. If the story had mentioned that there were alot of other comics and not "newspapers", the story would've been a bit more believable.

What an awesome find. Heard the guy that found it giving an interview over the radio and he said at first he thought the newspaper he found it in was worth more than the comic.

Here's a story. My cousin claims that our grandmother-now, he's 17 years older than I am, mind you-back in 1974, when he was about 10, took his copy of Action Comics, which our grandfather had given him, and used it for kitty litter.

I do wonder about peeps who claim 'I'm not a fan of Superman' it ususally comes down to the whole boy scout thing... but has he really been like that at all in the last 20+ years? There are some outstanding Superman (or Superman related) stories and you are just depriving yourself of some great reads over an outdated assumption of a character.

I could say, "I'm not a fan of Batman" as far as it related to my comic book collecting, so I get where some are coming from with Superman...ian_house wrote:I do wonder about peeps who claim 'I'm not a fan of Superman' it ususally comes down to the whole boy scout thing... but has he really been like that at all in the last 20+ years? but "I'm not a fan of Batman" doesn't mean that I don't enjoy the movies or that I don't enjoy seeing Batman costumes at Halloween.

Exactly, very few Superman books in my collection, but it doesn't mean I don't like Superman movies and the character in general.greg wrote:I could say, "I'm not a fan of Batman" as far as it related to my comic book collecting, so I get where some are coming from with Superman...ian_house wrote:I do wonder about peeps who claim 'I'm not a fan of Superman' it ususally comes down to the whole boy scout thing... but has he really been like that at all in the last 20+ years? Well I can't speak for all of us Super-pooper hatersian_house wrote:I do wonder about peeps who claim 'I'm not a fan of Superman' it ususally comes down to the whole boy scout thing... but has he really been like that at all in the last 20+ years? I know there must come suspension of belief when reading about caped heroes and the "actual" risk they are in, but I just couldn't look past the knowledge that regardless of the problem, Super-bore would come up with some super-way to solve it and all would be super-cheery afterwards. He was too "super".
I liked my characters to battle, not only the vile villain, but also aspects of life I could relate to ... as much as possible, and part of that battle was restrictions on what could be done. I hated the "all powerful hero" with limitless abilities. I enjoyed the hero having to deal with his limitations. One of the main reason I preferred Marvel over DC at the time (early 70s) was they had the "flawed" hero.
Give me the guy that could climb the walls at school but had issues with the students over the guy that could burst through those walls, have the kids praise him, teachers admire him, and then have the walls rebuilt all in 3 seconds. Or give me the guy that ran really fast with gray hair, funky green outfit and major communication issues over the other running guy in the red suit, with the great job and that great house in the great part of town, that could run so fast he could time travel.
Yes, I know a lot has changed, and I have actually read some good to great Superman stories over the years (and in fact have ordered the first two issues of the new Snyder book) but deep down ... I just don't like that guy.
