Yeah it was Vooch311. I've been looking for those myself for awhile. Hard to find. Great pick-up for him.
Yeah, 19 is especially hard to find, I paid more for the 19 I have than that entire lot went for! Definitely a great pick up :thumb:

Impressive sale! Looks like this seller has been selling several high grade early Valiant variants. The person who won the previous copy from this seller got in a bidding war on this second copy.

Ho-lee *SQUEE*in' *SQUEE*, Batman :o !!

I know it can be a real donkey punch, condition-wise, but that's gotta' be some kinda' record for that book, no :? ?

Needless to say, I was only slightly out-bid on that'n  .

Harby pink 9.8 is only around $150 shipped. So raw Magnus #13 must be worth more than a raw Harby pink. :kidaround:

I'd like to know who placed the final bid of $250 that caused me to pay that price. I went to bed before the auction ended and put in the winning bid amount, never thinking it would get that high. Oh well. I'm still happy.

No. I already own it. I purchased it from a poster on this site for a respectable price last year. I was happy with the purchase until I saw the copy you sold several months ago. I now have to set my sights on the Vintage Magnus books and I will complete my 9.8 Pre-Unity set.

I think you meant the Magnus 11 I bought . . . The Vintage Magnus books are a little easier/cheaper to get now. They used to be really rare but more copies have been added compared to 5 years ago.

I have a theory that the market actually reflects a "total of price times availability" sort of balance.
So, in the case of Magnus #13, there are currently 13 copies in CGC 9.8. If they're $150 to $250 each, that's about $2,000 to $3,200 total.

Meanwhile, there are 37 copies of CGC 9.8 Magnus #14, and they sell for about $50 to $75... that's about $1,800 to $2,800.

Is a raw Magnus #13 only slightly more important than Magnus #14? Yes, probably... and it's slightly more CGC 9.8 total value. Makes sense.

The fact that there are only 13 copies of Magnus #13 in CGC 9.8 makes each individual copy very expensive, but overall, it makes sense.
It also makes sense that if a bunch of CGC 9.8 Magnus #13 were suddenly graded and put on the market,
each individual copy would be much cheaper... probably approaching Magnus #14 value before long.

So, as long as the "total value" of the CGC slabs is consistent from issue to issue, the "crazy single values" actually do make sense.

This theory also does a pretty good job of explaining the fall of CGC 9.8 Harbinger #1 from $2,000+ to $400+.
The number of copies on the census is significantly higher, impacting individual copies, but the overall value still makes sense.
There were about 20 copies of CGC 9.8 Harbinger #1 when it sold for $2,000... that's $40,000 total.
Now, there are 99 copies of CGC 9.8 Harbinger #1 and it sells for $450... that's $44,500 total.
Harbinger is back in print, so the CGC 9.8 total value of the first appearance (Harbinger #1 1992) has risen from $40,000 to $44,500.
Individual values are lower, but we know why... supply has increased by five times as many.
Even with the supply increase, the total value has ALSO increased... meaning that Harbinger #1 has "more market share" than it used to.

Harbinger #0 Pink is also an important early Valiant comic.
$150 for CGC 9.8, and there are 187 of them on the census.
That's $28,000 total.

Comparing total value, that makes Harbinger #0 Pink about 10 times more important than Magnus #13.
That makes sense in total value, it makes sense in raw value, and it makes sense in terms of storyline and characters, importance to collectors.

The only thing that doesn't seem to make sense is that CGC 9.8 Magnus #13 is $250 and CGC 9.8 Harbinger #0 Pink is $150.
But throw the "total value" into the mix, and it does make sense... even if individual prices seem wacky.

I would have needed that back when I thought that a 9.9 should be 3 times a 9.8. At least for less common books I know now that it's a lot more.

I'd say 3x is about right for even more "common" issues. That would put a common at about $75 in a 9.9

I read recently on the CGC forums a 9.9 is 4-5 times what a 9.8 goes for. It's still highly subjective though...

Very subjective... but generally depends on the book.

Questions to ask:
1) Is the book (raw) already popular?
2) Are there other CGC 9.9 or CGC 10 for the same book on the census?

If the answers are:
1) No
2) Yes
... then you might be lucky to get two times the CGC 9.8 price.

If the answers are:
1) Yes
2) No
... then the right auction with the right combination of bidders could go for 20+ times the CGC 9.8 price.

In November 2009, there was one copy of CGC 9.9 New Mutants #98 (1st Deadpool) on the census.
It sold for $12,250. At the time, CGC 9.8 went for $250.
So, the only CGC 9.9 for a very popular book sold for 49 times the CGC 9.8 price.

Today, there are 8 CGC 9.9 New Mutants #98. The last two sales were right at $4,100 each.
The CGC 9.8 sells for $350, so the CGC 9.9 is now around 12 times the CGC 9.8 price.

Similar story for CGC 9.9 Walking Dead #1 (2003), but the CGC 9.9 multiplier has been stable...
CGC 9.9 was about 5 times the CGC 9.8 price in 2009, and it's about 5 times the CGC 9.9 price today.

It's hard to name two hotter books from the last 25 years... but that's a pretty big difference... 12 times vs. 5 times.
So, what's driving those prices?

Well, in both cases, there are only 8 or 9 copies of CGC 9.9 on the census... but...
In the case of New Mutants #98, that's 8 copies out of 3,271 graded... or about 1-out-of-400.
In the case of Walking Dead #1, there are 9 copies out of 1,194 graded... or about 1-out-of-130.

CGC 9.9 New Mutants #98 is about three times rarer on the CGC census than CGC 9.9 Walking Dead #1, relative to total copies graded.
Perhaps that helps us understand the 12 times vs. 5 times difference.

The NM book was also the first book in 9.9, no? I'm not concerned with the first variable in your criteria, I don't think crazy premiums should be paid for a common, irrelevant book. I'm trying to think of the big Valiant books that have sold in 9.9, a Unity Red and a Magnus 0 come to mind...the prices, however, and any other books do not...

I'm trying to think of the big Valiant books that have sold in 9.9, a Unity Red and a Magnus 0 come to mind...the prices, however, and any other books do not...
The CGC 9.9 Unity #0 Red sold for $635 in 2005, when the CGC 9.8s were averaging $285. (2.2 times the 9.8)
The CGC 9.9 Magnus #0 (without card) sold for $500 in 2006, when the CGC 9.8s were averaging $95. (5.2 times the 9.8)

The CGC 9.9 Rai #0 sold for $338 in 2008, when the CGC 9.8s were averaging $40. (8.5 times the 9.8)
At the time, it was the only CGC 9.9 on the census, but a CGC 10 did exist, it sold in 2003 for about 8 times the 9.8 average.
The second CGC 9.9 Rai #0 sold for $281 in Feb. 2013, when the CGC 9.8s were averaging $54. (5.2 times the 9.8)
