De La Torre and Mico are so good on this book .. so many great pages to choose from. Valiant needs to lock both of these guys into their own book ASAP!

Its hard to figure out where exactly the Art transition happens...

It looks like De La Torre does the 1st 11 pages
Then some combo including Neil Edwards and Larosa does page 12-15
And Mico does page 16 on - the ritual scene
I think Edwards did 12-15. Larosa appears to have drawn the panels of the father's recollection of his experience and his dream of the Lyceum.

The printed comic:
"My brother and I were born in Lousiana in 1812."
"We were born on our father's plantation..."
Aha! There you go. Thanks!

I know that line changed a few times - it started out as her mentioning that they born the same year Louisana became a state (and indeed, their birth precedes that very slightly) but that was a little oblique - so it gets slightly difficult to recall which one actually made it to the page.

(Which is why I actually consult the printed books for reference, but even then, I mess up occasionally - see Anne Alafair)
You handled that like a pro!

By the way I got my "no-prize" and I split it with Bugsy

Drove to my Not so local comic shop early to get this due to this thread. I was not disappointed with the 90 min travel time (there and back again) to read this issue (among other things).

Others here have said it better than I could, so just want to echo the fact this is an amazing issue of Shadowman, easily the best Shadowman issue and probably the best VEI comic to me.

Mr. Jordan:

So happy to read this, the art was of course great, but the writing is what I look for in a comic. I enjoyed the rest of the series, I LOVED this issue.

Thanks for such an enjoyable story and I agree with the others too... more MORE MORE :D
Where are we going and why am I in this hand-basket?

Thanks! I think it's my best work on the book, and probably my best work for hire stuff. There's a lot more to the origin of the Darques and how it relates to Shadowman, which we'll be unspooling.

But it does relate - this is Shadowman #0 not Darque #0
Interesting, I can't wait to see how it all unfolds.
You can really tell the effort that went into the building up of the Shadowman mythology throughout the series so far and it really came all together in this issue. I can't wait to see how all the dots connect with Lyceum, the deadside, the brethren, the abettors ... the ambition is very evident and appreciated. I think this is just the tip of the iceberg with what we will learn about Darque and Sandria - I'm really looking forward to learning more. And I have a feeling we'll see more of the original Master Darque (Nico and Sandria's father) - there has to be a reason why he was the way he was - Why he became obsessed with the Art in the first place. Who turned him onto it? Perhaps he has some connection with the Shadowman Legacy.. :hm:

I think my only problem with it is since Jack's father featured so prominently on the cover, one would THINK it would cover some of Jack's dad's adventures. That said, this issue was AMAZING. Almost as good as Harbinger #0, it's just one step below it.

As said by so many before me, easily the best issue of Shadowman yet, Justin has set the benchmark for what I hope the series becomes. Hopefully Shadowman himself will become as interesting as Darque. 5/5 :thumb:

Dallow, I think you nailed it for me... In the new series, Master Darque us much more interesting than Shadowman. Jack is two dimensional and "fell into his powers" too easily. The old series, Jack struggled with his newfound power.

I think all the new Valiant titles suffer from too much instant on action. XO is already off planet and i don't think he has even bathed but once. Story development is a talent and everyone has slipped top easily into their roles, even though for the characters all their powers are new, I think that this being an "old universe" the new creators are running a bit too hard to "get to the action". I know that if I were a janitor and jumped into fighting supernatural monsters, I'd have some "adjustment time" that would be required.

Thanks Dallow.

Yeah that has been my quibble with Shadowman so far, he slotted into this supernatural world far too easily. Still early days yet, so I'm optimistic the series can kick on from here! :hope:

Welcome!

I was not very familiar with your work before the Deadside scene in Shadowman #5 and this #0 issue, but I have greatly enjoyed your work. I hope we will see you as a regular artist on a VALIANT book soon!

Agree with everyone above about your art Robert. I read comics 90% based on story and really could love a book that was stick figures with a good story. However, good art really elevates a comic. After reading Shadowman #5, I was awestruck by your pages. Awesome. Even more so in Shadowman #0.

Like everyone, I love this issue but think it's really Darque #0 - perhaps this will lead into his own mini/ongoing? I sure hope so. I want more of Darque's story.

Right up there with Shadowman #1 and #5 as the best in the series so far (probably the best).

Justin Jordan posted that this was indeed Shadowman #0 and not Darque #0, alluding to this issue being pivotal to the Shadowman history/origin.

Dark and Gritty, nothing beats that art though. It was smart to step away from Jack for once and look at Master Darque in a bigger picture. Hopefully Sandria comes back.
