Harbinger Wars #1 Discussion

Post by erwinrafael »

The benefits of being in the Philippines is that we have an earlier time zone. SO I have my comic books earlier. :p

Anyway, nice start to the event. I found the use of recollection as narrative device as unnecessary because the transition to the Renegades felt a bit out of the flow since it was outside the account of Morris Kozol. The use of numerous characters in the story was nicely handled, Dysart really excels in balancing a big cast. I do hope that he would be able to maintain that balance in future issues, we have more than twenty characters being used here!

I also enjoyed the ad showing that there is an 8-bit Harbinger Wars game coming. :p So that was what the 8-bit covers are about. Nice pic of Gamma. :D

But I have one major complaint. I am all for giving credit where credit is due and I find it really unfortunate that Mico Suayan is not acknowledged on the cover. And also in Warren Simons' "Welcome to Harbinger Wars" piece at the end. Mico did a great job with the Bleeding Monk sequence.

Great book. Lots of set up, which makes sense since the individual Bloodshot and Harby issues will fill in the blanks. Love the Psiot kids and their power sets. And Torque's dialogue had me rolling...love him...in a total Bro way...nothing gay...I swear

I also agree with the top post re: Suyan...Great sequence. And the Renegade scene did seem a bit out of place despite its awesomeness...A brief reference at the debriefing to Pete and the group escaping PRS (twice) would have tied that in a bit more neatly.

Overall, this book was so packed full of awesome, I don't know if I can wait another month for issue 2 and the Harada Protocol! :!:

Nice scans

This issue was pretty damn good, I liked the scenes with the psiot kids. As mentioned before Dysart can balance a huge cast of characters very well.

Also, Bloodshot exploded himself with C4, which is hardcore as *SQUEE*. I can't wait to see him take on Harada :!:

This was really a pleasant read. Of the new characters presented in this issue, I liked Christian the most. I'm curious to see what role he plays in the foreseeable future and his brand of leadership. It may provide a nice contrast with what we've seen thus far from Harada and Peter. The interactions were great. I like how everyone, bar Harada, peed their pants at the sight of Bloodshot.

No, really, I thoroughly enjoyed this issue. Can't wait for more!

That was an excellent read, and a great start to this event. I finished reading, and my overall impression was "day-um... there was a whole lot of goodness packed in that one issue!" If the remaining issues are scripted and paced out so well, this will truly be epic. Bloodshot staring down Harada with an assault rifle was worth the price of admission, alone.

Loved the focus on the new psiots that we hadn't seen in Bloodshot's assault on PRS. Telic and Traveler, to me, are two of the most original power bases we've seen in a long time. Take that for what it's worth, but I really am hoping they survive and used in future stories/titles... <cough> Secret Weapons <achoo>. :hope:

Only complaint... the visuals of battle in China got a little too muddy. Guess you could blame it on the chaos of the circumstance, but it was kinda hard to see what was happening there.
Good Morning, that's a nice tnetennba.

wasn't their three artists on this issue?

Telic is a very cool power set character, a lot of possibilities not the least of which was the shocking take down of the Renegades. Very cool visual and I have to admit, I was slightly panicked. Very cool set-up for the event, while on initial read it is a bit problematic to introduce so many new characters it was engaging enough for me to go back and immediately re-read.
What we need is innovation and even revolution—but not so much in the form of marketing ploys and doohickeys. What is needed is bold creative vision, excellent stories, and brilliant storytelling, in a word, entertainment. -- Jim Shooter

Very Cool issue, I liked the way they made it primarily about the kids. Seeing the Monk speak after so long was cool. At least we can see he def. has taken sides so to speak. Loved the different art per segments. The Painted pages were sweet!! Overall I give this issue a 7.5/10. I'm willing to bet it only gets better from here. :thumb:

Really liked this issue! Dysart is a really talented writer. Overall I've enjoyed Bloodshot more than
Harbinger, but i definitely think Dysart excels with large casts. I am really looking forward to seeing this all play out!

I think this might be favorite individual VEI issue so far in terms of the art. Especially love the Clayton Crain stuff. Really great story too definitely has me even more excited to see where it goes.

My favorite issue in terms of art is still Mico Suayan and Pere Perez's Harbinger #0. The complementation of storytelling by the two especially the parallel panels and the transitions was outstanding. :)

I Loved this issue

You always worry about a let down when it's the first issue of an important cross over event .. But it exceeded my expectations

The story was amazing. Dysart did a brilliant job in setting up the story and introducing the major players. I really enjoyed the new characters especially Cronus and Telic. So many cool stuff happening - The sentient Virus was interesting, the bleeding monk was awesome (how he experiences parallel realities), how they tied in the 1st issue of bloodshot.. This was definitely up there as one of my favorite issues since the relaunch.

The art was amazing ... Cannot say enough about how beautiful this book was .. All 3 artists and the coloring were top notch.

Story 9/10
Art 9/10
Ha! Yeah! Nice! Any of those dudes in your head mosh?! - Flamingo

Hello all!

I'm a newbie to this forum. Have been a Valiant collector since 92'. Anyway Harbinger Wars wasn't hyped enough! It was excellent. I too love the Bleeding monk part of this issue, and wonder still what is his angle. Look foward to some more Torque dialogue, I like the "happy idiot"! Can't wait to see how this turns out.
Big fan of Clayton Crain, all the art was great though!!
9/10

The War has begun.

I wasn't quite sure if I knew what I was expecting but I was pleasantly surprised by this issue. It was a great set up issue as it started putting the pieces on the board.

The things I liked;

Realising that the story was based on the point of view of the new Psiots during the events that happened in the last couple of Bloodshot issues. That tied in so nicely.

See the Bleeding Monk impaled against the statue. Now I know where his wound comes from.

The artwork flowed nicely even if it was done by multiple artists. It never took me out of the story but I know the writing had a lot to do with it.

Seeing the twins getting separated and how it started to affect them. There is going to more with this you can just tell.

Harada just waltzing in on the Bleeding Monk and Peter's conversation. It just goes to show there is no hiding or clandestine meetings.

The shrapnel in the heads of the Psiots as the means for PRS to control them. I thought this was a nice touch instead of the usual exploding collars or bomb in the brain.

The arrogance and nastiness of Morris Kozol. You know that when he finally gets his, and he should, it will be satisfying.

The things I didn't like;

When the issue ended and I realised I had to wait another month for the next one ;)

"Child of NAS."...Forgot that in my first post and I had to throw that out there...Made me chuckle.

Also, anyone think the "sentient virus" might have something to do with the Nanites? They also had an issue with sentience and I don't think Dysart would duplicate a concept like that for no reason. Hive absorbing the consciousness of one of the subjects seems like it will be important as well as, again, I can't see Dysart just throwing that in there. I think the knowledge Hive now has may be important in dealing with Bloodshot at some point.

Kick *SQUEE*!

Big fan of this issue, an amazing start. Loved the line at the end by bloodshot, loved it all. I only read it once last night, but will again later on today.

This lived up to all of the hype around it, everything fit together so nicely.
BugsySig wrote:

I thought the same thing.

Also I liked seeing bleeding monk impaled through the chest. Leaving a circle on it...

I don't know, I guess we will see for sure later. I am always on the lookout for Rai
Where are we going and why am I in this hand-basket?

Absolutely LOVED this issue. I have to admit though, I'm wary now of the Harbinger and Bloodshot tie-ins. Did I understand correctly that the Bloodshot issue, for example, would be the same story as Harbinger #1 but told from Bloodshot's point of view? I'll give that an open mind, but my gut reaction is to wish that it was a continuation of the story, rather than a different point of view....

Anyhow, Harbinger Wars #1 was absolutely incredible! Can't wait to see what happens next!

It can't all be the same story. He wasn't there for most of the book.
I seem to remember that Unity had a lot of overlapping stories throughout the different titles.
