I came into Hickman's works very organically (as in I did not seek him out or even know there was hype surrounding him). I had Manhattan Projects recommended here by some members - tried it - loved it (my favorite comic right now) and then through another unrelated post (by Lightning Strike) tried his run on Fantastic Four which I have also loved (not done with it yet). Avengers and New Avengers have been the first books that I picked strictly because they were written by him, and I haven't been disappointed. I plan on getting his older stuff. Him personally, at least through his Twitter, seems a little abrasive and egotistical, but that doesn't mean he can't write awesome stuff.

I came to like him the same way I came to like Christopher Nolan as a filmmaker (another polarizing figure with lots of hype). I watched several films (The Prestige, Memento, Dark Knight) and put them as some of my favorite films before I realized they were all by the same guy. He's another person who just makes stuff I like no matter what.
I like Hickman as well, though I haven't read some of his older stuff. Since you like Manhattan Projects, try his SHIELD series from a few years ago. It has that same historical fiction/wacky sci fi element and does not involve much actual Marvel-ness. I thought it was one of the better books they produced in a while.

Agreed, Hickman's SHIELD was excellent and didn't get enough attention IMO. Actually enjoyed it more than Manhattan Projects so far....and it wasn't encumbered with heavy Marvel continuity.

It's true I'm afraid, there's only one place to buy a taco in Cambridge as far as I know :/ People just aren't that fussed on Mexican food in the UK. The one place we do have is a really really tiny place, like just a walk in - walk out takeaway.

And I didn't even have coffee, I had a sissy lime flavour drink in ice sort of thing, I don't even know what it was. Took me about half an hour to decide what I wanted too. I'm so bad at the whole 'coffee shop' thing!

But it was nice to finally see a few shelf copies of Harbinger, I think maybe there was some X-O too(?) and a single Bloodshot. I'm glad that FB are *finally* realising that there's a strong enough demand for Valiants to at least *try* to sell some shelf copies. Just have to see if they stay on the shelf now, or if they sell :)

They use all sorts of meat for tacos. My personal favorite is tripas (small intestines of a cow).

Fish tacos are more of a novelty that generally aren't at taco stands, but usually at restaurants.

From what I hear, tacos sold in the UK aren't authentic due to the random ingredients.

The only LCS in my area closed shop because the guy used check fraud to buy his stock of comic books one month and went away to jail for a little while.

Prior to that he recommended I buy Batman: The Dark Knight. Terrible comic book. After that I ignored him and bought the new Batman Beyond (2011 series).

You're probably right. But I think they're probably more or less correct. Beef mince, salsa and lettuce plus any other random crap they might decide to throw in to spice it up. I haven't had one for years, so I don't really know. Maybe one of the other English guys on here might know?

And ground beef and shredded beef are not the same thing, fascinating. All the tacos up here are ground beef (hamburger).

I wonder if beef mince is like a paste and comes out of a tube like toothpaste :hm:

Has anyone ever heard of spray beef in a aerosol form?

Boy we sure are hijacking this thread....oh wait it's THIS thread, never mind

Beef mince & lettuce is an Americanized thing (The American fast food joint, Taco Bell, is a perfect example).

Traditionally, tacos have a choice of fajita meat (chicken or beef), barbacoa (shredded beef), carnitas (pork), etc.....You also have a choice of corn or soft flour tortillas (NOT hard-shell)......The other ingredients are cilantro, chopped onions, salsa, and a slice of lime to squeeze onto the taco. A few places will also give stuff like grilled jalapenos and/or sliced radish, but that's not common.

I've never seen beef mince as an option for tacos at authentic taco joints/stands.

Burrito Boy wrote:Beef mince? Is that what you guys call shredded beef? :?
Beef mince is the Queen's English for ground beef.

Shredded beef, where taco stands are concerned, are barbacoa. Some places make barbacoa out of tongue, but usually it's simply basic shredded beef (Basic as in conventional beef sections, not tongue).

Of course, conventional tongue tacos are called lengua. Very strong flavor and kind of chewy, I'm not particularly into it.......There's also cachete, which is cow cheek.

I have always heard barbacoa explained as cow cheek and lengua as a different meat. I have had both, barbacoa many times, and the two do not taste alike.

Chiclo wrote:I have always heard barbacoa explained as cow cheek and lengua as a different meat. I have had both, barbacoa many times, and the two do not taste alike.

A lot of places make barbacoa out of cow cheek (barbacoa made out of tongue is far less common). Thing is, when either, or even other parts of meat, are made into barbacoa, the preparation is different and it becomes a shredded meat.

Lengua (tongue) and cachete (cow cheek), when made conventionally, are different than barbacoa, predominantly via the texture. Lengua is kind of rubbery/chewy (And you can often see the tongue nodules), while cachete is very fatty and soft (Almost gooey). When either is made into barbacoa, the texture becomes completely different, from my experience.

That said, I've never liked barbacoa. The only types of tacos I generally get are beef fajita, tripas (my favorite), and, on occasion, I might get one lengua or cachete.......For whatever reason, I rarely like the chicken fajita meat used for taco stands. There's a certain flavor, likely due to the preparation, I don't care for.
