As 400 said it's very much for the fans of the Bendis run, really good but the same style.carter3175 wrote:I have been thinking about reading that...is it any good?400yrs wrote:I'm behind on my new comic book reading, but I read a few things yesterday and all of it was great:
ASM 695 - 695 - More awesome Slottiness!
Swamp Thing 12 - Rotworld!
Daredevil End of Days #1 - bloody. If you liked the Bendis DD run, this is probably worth a read in trade
Saga #7 - Oh Yeah!
ASM - AF 15, #33, #50 and The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man. Classic!
No Place Like Home #5 - better late than never.

The Legend of Bold Riley an excellent graphic novel about a female warrior and her adventures.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
So I read all 6 issues of Strange Talent of Luther Strode last night by Joshua Jordan.
It was a quick read but ....... good. It is not something that if described to me I would probably be interested in. But I heard some good things about it AND it was written by the dude writing Shadowman right now, so it was a go.
I'm glad I read it and I would be interested in read the next series if he ever does it. It is an interesting concept and extremely violent. The art style really grew on me (the book sorta of reminded me of invincible in some ways). what I enjoyed the most is the writing and the dialogue. There were a few times that I laughed out loud.
Overall the book is a very violent but also very cleverly written. I'd recommend it and if you like violent books, you will probably really like it.
Up next is some early Dark Horse Star wars stuff, I'll start with Star wars Dark Empire.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
The Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye #7-8 and Annual 2012
MTMTE #7 and #8 is a two parter that introduces the Decepticon Justice Division (or DJD for short) a new group of Decepticon fanatics who torture and kill any Decepticon that rebels, defects, or shows cowardice. The DJD leader, Tarn (the names of the DJD members are named after Cybertronian cities that Megatron conquered during the war), whose face is a Decepticon symbol looks stupid and another one has big red "X" over his face. Seriously he has a big red "X" over his face, so besides all looking them looking stupid they didn't get the message that the war is over. They are chasing a Decepticon character named Fulcrum because he didn't die during the war, and was brought back to life by another group of Decepticons dubbed the Scavengers because well that is what they're doing. The Scavengers are actually cool guys they know the war is over, but they aren't 100% sure which side won, and they want to get their spaceship fixed so they can go home and they also find a Decepticon spaceship that looks like Tarn's face and when Tarn sends them a message that the DJD is coming to kill one of them they discover that the ship has the Dinobot leader Grimlock in stasis and they decide to fight the DJD.
In #8 It's The Scavengers and Grimlock vs. the DJD, Fulcrum is revealed to be the one DJD wants because he was deemed a coward during the war and rebuilt to transform into a missile and was supposed to die and he didn't. He transforms and fires himself at the DJD and apparently explodes. Tarn is satisfied and the DJD departs to find Overlord, whose in the "basement" of Rodimus Prime's spaceship, the only problem is that no one but Red Alert knows he's there and Red Alert is paranoid and knows that no one will believe him. The Scavengers find out that Fulcrum didn't die and decide to take Grimlock back to Cybertron because if the Autobot won, they can show they were merciful and brought Grimlock back they will get a pardon, if the Decepticons won they show that they captured one of the most powerful Autobots and they will have they're honor restored.
The hype for the DJD was just hot air. Roberts does nothing to make these guys into anything other than just bunch of fanatical sadists and the designs are stupid looking even for the Transformers who have their fair share of stupid looking characters over the years. Grimlock's big return was even a bigger let down he's just shows up on a crashed Decepticon spaceship when he was reported escaping the G-9 prison planet in the vastly over rated The Transformers: The Last Stand of the Wreckers mini-series that Roberts co-wrote 3 years ago. No explanation is given to why he's on the ship or what has happened to him, one of the Scavengers says he's brain damaged, and now reduced to the 1986 movie and third season of the cartoon show version of a wonderful character. This seems to be growing trend of Roberts of throwing in stuff that makes no sense in anyway and hope to explain it later. The Scavengers are the only real highlight in this 2 parter. It's nice to see underused characters get a breath of fresh air and it's great to see other Decepticons that aren't just a bunch psychos and brainless thugs. It also nice to see another one, in this case Fulcrum, who didn't join to conquer the universe but to overthrow a very corrupt government. The art by Alex Miline is not as great as it once was due to his coping the style of Nick Roche who is IMHO by far the worse TF artist since Pat Lee. I wish Miline would stop coping his crap and go back to his orginal style which when colored properly made him one best TF artists. If the Scavengers weren't so enjoyable this would be total crap, but it's at best an average story. 2.5 out of 5.
The Annual is deals with Rodimus and company finally getting to the planet where Drift found Crystal City, (the home base of the Transformers that can guide Rodimus and company to the Knights of Cybertron) only to find that Intergalatic Council spaceship waiting there. Tailgate finally officially becomes an Autobot. Ultra Magnus continues his decline from a bad *SQUEE* to a bad joke. Rodimus becomes serious, and Cyclonus tells the origin myth of the Transformers. Roberts throws out some very funny one-liners and jokes and then switches gears (pardon the pun) to get into some serious faith vs atheism debate and the end of the story is a literally deus ex machina (and no, the irony is not lost on me on that phrase) to get Rodimus and his team out of trouble is even lame. The artwork by Jimbo Salgado and Emil Cabaltierra really sucks for the most part the only highlight is "the flashback" story of the TF's creation by Guido Guidi drawn in 80s Marvel style. Then there price $8 for about 32 pages of crappy art and 8 pages of great art and Guidi's designs. I doubt even Robert's 3 hour podcast commentary trying explain this mess wouldn't help me like this crap, because the first-ever US Transformers Annual just plain sucks and gets a 1 out of 5. My advice is it buy it cheap or in TPB because there is nothing really worth $8.00, I think it's barely worth 8 cents.
Next up is: The Transformers: Robots In Disguise #7-8 and Annual 2012. Which looks to much better than all of the above is.

Just read the first 3 issues of Manhattan Projects - thanks for the recommendations. This particular book resonates with me because I know a lot of the actual history of the Manhattan project. Getting ready to read Chew right now. I think both will be going in my pullbox. Haven't gotten my hands on Moriarty yet.

Revival #5 - I still don't really know what is going on. The last 4 issues feel like I've been reading the same thing. I'm not really even seeing a storyline in this first arc here other than weirdness. A bit disappointing feeling after the truly awesome first issue. 3/5.
Nowhere Men #1 - 3.5 / 5. If you like Manhattan Projects, this may be up your alley. It's sciencey. I like what they did with the story-telling elements, but this just isn't my kind of mag.
Marvel Team Up (Kirkman run) vol 1 and 2. This was an ok read, but not so super. 2.5 / 5.

I had debated getting this. Alas, my love for Chris Roberson didn't win out over my dislike for Alex Ross. I'll flip through it next time I'm in a comic shop and maybe will pick it up.Brother Darque wrote:Picked up the first issue of Masks.

So, I just finished reading Manhattan Projects up to the current issue. Wow. Quite possibly my favorite comic. Definitely will be up there with Sandman if it stays consistent. This is definitely my kind of book. Thanks to those who recommended it. I have this this and Chew to add to my pullbox. On to Invincible to see if it gets added. I should have Moriarty shortly thanks to a board member.
Very excited to have other comics than Valiant to read.

I'm loving Manhattan Projects but putting it up there with Sandman and presumably the other major classics?! Very few books are on a level with Sandman. Of current books, if things had not fallen apart-though still good-with The Walking Dead, after the escape from the Governor's domain, then it would be in contention. As it is:
Chew, Fables (despite some ups and downs), Planetary, Hellboy/BPRD, Y: The Last Man, 100 Bullets and Maus. That's about it.

Can't really argue with this list. definitely listed all of what i'd call the greatest series' ever made. I'd put Bone at #1 for all ages series.xodacia81 wrote:Very few books are on a level with Sandman. Hawkeye is easily the best mainstream comic book out in the market today. Even the letters page is entertaining. You can even use the issues for a lecture on comic book storytelling.

Books I grabbed this week;
1] Invincible 98 - 'The Death Of Everyone' begins!
2] Legend Of Luther Strode #1 - can't wait to read this one, saving it for last...
3] Planetoid #4 [came out last week, just got it] - long wait between #3 & #4 but well worth it.
4] Shadowman #2 - of course!! Awesome issue.
5] Transformers: Regeneration One #86 - this title is still a ton of retro fun. Its like we're back in 1991 all over again!

Re: What comics are you reading now?
I was a little dissapointed with Invincible 98, they threw away the last 6 months of character development for the character that kicked it all off. Don't wanna give any spoilers, perhaps we should start a spoilers thread for Invincible as there were a couple of other things in this issue that are worth discussing.grendeljd wrote:Books I grabbed this week;

So I stared my Dark Horse Star wars stuff.
I've read: Dark Empire, Dark Empire II, and I started Tales of the Jedi.
all have been enjoyable, not outstanding, probably between good and very good (at points).
I enjoy the Star Wars mythos but was a bit dissapointed with some of the stuff in the books (Boba Fett still alive, the Emperor doing his spirit swap in new bodies).

TotJ has some good stuff, I particularly liked the Beast Wars of Onderon arc.

Did your copy of Dark Empire have the "text pages" at the back? If not, the inclusion of those pages makes a huge difference. I liked all the SW stuff DH did until about 98.Elveen wrote:So I stared my Dark Horse Star wars stuff.

The recent TPBs that I got didn't have them.
I just read The Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye #9 the first part of the 3 part "Shadowplay" arc a better read than the annual was.

The Walking Dead...I may end up getting the TPB for Chew.
Is there a trade out for Saga? My LCS only has 4-7.
