So this is one of the best books they have released. For me an easy top 3 book (with Harby 5 and XO 5).
What I loved about it: exploding heads, political takeovers, giving away rice balls, creepy triplets.... and a GREAT Monk cameo.
My ranking: 4.95/5 "rice ball-oos"

I enjoyed I aswell.
Not a team book fan, but this team book - well doesn't seem to be a team book yet.
I like the slow development.
Like the relationship between the boy and hydra.
Head popping fun!

I wish their was a Spinal Tap comic, and I had a copy CGC graded at 11.

Best Valiant book yet. Excellent writing with poignancy, insight and juxtaposition...
The art is gorgeous. I would have been happy to see this one black and white. The flashbacks are stunning. Really works wells with the writing.
Love.

Weak issue. Could have done without the darpan oil story. I was hoping that the issue would focus on haradas origin. While it does I would have liked to see more of it in a 0 issue. 5 /10

I was also a little diappointed in this issue as I would of liked to have seen more of Haradas origin or at least some more info on the bleeding monk but I guess that will be later as for the art it was amazing.Bubba wrote:Weak issue. I agree as well (except for the "weak" part). Still a very enjoyable issue, but so much revolved around the Syrian Oil deal, which doesn't have much bearing on the main story. It serves as an example of how far Harada is willing to go, but that was already established through more subtle hints in other issues.tated250 wrote:I was also a little diappointed in this issue as I would of liked to have seen more of Haradas origin or at least some more info on the bleeding monk but I guess that will be later as for the art it was amazing.Bubba wrote:Weak issue. Still a very enjoyable read, but I was hoping to see a bit more of Harada between Hiroshima and the present day.

I think a lot of the point behind the story was the oil. The wars then as now are fought for the same thing.BugsySig wrote:I agree as well (except for the "weak" part). I suppose I can understand people wanting to see more of Harada, he is a compelling character after all, but what more could have been offered that wasn't?
Bleeding Monk - I like that there is mystery surrounding him and I think his origin might come around from another titles 0 issue (Rai anyone?)
Loved it. 5/5

I'm glad the book was just not a flashback only story.
To me, it just shows Josh's talent to work in the back story
While forwarding the main story.
I'm thinking the takeover will play a role in thesis story.
It was not a throw away divise to tell the origin.
Darpan is awesome!

Don't get me wrong, I liked the story, I just don't know if it was a true "Zero" issue the way it looks like Shadowman and A&A will be.
I did appreciate the "wars over oil" theme, and the insight into Harada's relationship with Darpan--truly cares for him, but uses him as a weapon not only for his own means but to groom him as his successor.
Just a personal opinion that they could have cut back the Syria stuff a little and given us a glimpse at Harada growing his empire beyond the camps.

Ok, just read this a second time.
Young Toyo is looking for his father, right?
Looking for his father again... can't find him.
The Bleeding Monk appears to him and says "Find Me."
So... guess who I'm NOW thinking the Bleeding Monk is...

Re: Harbinger #0 Discussion
I thought this was a great insight on what makes Toyo Harada tick.
Like most comic villains - He wants money and power but what makes him interesting and complex is that he wants those things for what he believes to be a noble purpose. And in the case of this issue, he saved many lives, by helping to put an end to a deadly conflict in Syria. At the same time he increased his power by making a deal on the oil reserves. He is helping the world and at the same time consolidating his power. Not very different from what the U.S has done at times .. in their pursuit of supporting regime changes in the middle east and around the world.
How many other world conflicts and Wars has Toyo Harada and his foundation resolved through the years since World War 2? How many lives has he saved through these many years?
I'm sure Harada believes all this good he has done outweigh's the bad he has had to do in order to consolidate and amass his great power.
If I was to say he saved 100 times more innocent lives then he has killed ... by Stopping World War 3 ... Stopping Genocide's ... etc ... would the world really be better off without him?
I don't like to see anyone innocent die. But maybe hippy ideals are not how the world works - it's not a practical viewpoint. When you see your city burn to the ground and your love ones decay before your eyes ... when you are faced with those extremes of what man is capable of in terms of death and destruction - maybe that shapes your morals and your perspective on the price of power and life.

It was mentioned that his mother was Buhdist.
However "seizing power from those unfit to wield it" is not a very Buhdist ideal.
Also reminds me of Nietzche "seek not to fight monsters lest you become one" or something like that.
Harada indentified this "cause of evil" at an early age and now he seeks to control it, but in doing so is he any less of a monster then those he seeks to opposse?

The best villians tend to be those that do not truly see themselves as villians and can justify to themselves the reasons for why they do, what they do.BugsySig wrote:Don't get me wrong, I liked the story, I just don't know if it was a true "Zero" issue the way it looks like Shadowman and A&A will be.

Toyo saw the true horrors and repercussions of war, he learned at a young age what it was all over (oil) and even as an adult, when he has amassed so much wealth, he is seeking to change the world, free the oil and recreate the order of the world.
He sees in Darpan himself and is doing what he feels is right to give Darpan a focus and a chance that he never had for himself. He wanted the same for Pete.
I love this title.

Thought it was a great issue, though as some others have implied I think this easily could have just been another issue in the series. Still, I am happy that I get two Harbinger issues this month so I don't mind in the least!
can't wait to read the next issue!

On a side note.
This issue seems to be very popular (unless it was just under ordered?)
I bought the last 2 on the rack (pull box and regular) at my normal LCS
I went to a different LCS ... and they didn't have any on the rack but they had one available and it was the pull box version and they were selling it for 8 buck's
Considering this is the first day it was released ... pretty good sign that it's selling well..
