With you on Planetary! And Myron, if you want an authentic reading experience, spread the 27 issues out over 10 years.xodacia81 wrote:Planetary is one of the best series I've read. Ellis is the hold up. Templesmith said he is waiting for Warren to write more.

Mind the Gap vol 1 - Much like Peter Panzerfaust, this definitely worked better for me as a trade. I'll check out the next one.
Detective 875 - Although it's part of a larger story, this issue is fantastic as a single.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
Planetary is in my top two all time favourite comic series, alongside Grendel. One of the most brilliant concepts I've ever read, and its what got me onto Cassaday as an amazing artist. It's a rewarding read, and even more so if you know all the 20th century comic/film/pulp-fiction pop cultural references that he takes and twists. It's Ellis's answer to Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, in a way.myron wrote:that's why i pick up floppies for collecting and TPBs for reading...so I don't have to wait so damn long...dbngaa wrote:With you on Planetary! I stumbled onto the first two trades in a library one day and was hooked. Checked the LCS and found #26 on the shelf... Tracked down the single issues in the couple years waiting for #27, then read it all at once. I can't imagine the agony suffered by any of you poor *SQUEE* who followed it from the day #1 was on the shelf...

Deadpool #1 - 2/5. If you like Deadpool, you'll like this. Don't buy it for the Tony Moore art alone because it's not as great as his normal stuff.
Iron Man #1 - 0/5. I didn't finish this. Terrible.
Thor #1 - 4/5. Good stuff, but not sure it's worth the $4 price tag.
Walking Dead #104 - 4/5. This is getting nuts.
Invincible #97 - 5/5. This issue ran me through several emotions. Confusion. Disgust. Laughter. Excitement. You know..... your typical issue of Invincible with many, many threads being moved along and an origin story squeezed in as well.
The Great Pacific #1 - 3.5/5. This was pretty good, but a bit vague. Not sure if I'll get the next one.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
In my opinion, most definitely. Over the last many years, it has been my favorite super hero book and at times, my favorite overall series. If you like super heroes, Invincible is how super heroes should be done. The only catch is that it took about a full hardcover (13 issues) to get going and the art was a bit rough at first.carter3175 wrote:....Dude let me ask you...Is Invincible that good? Invincible has deaths where the characters stay dead, many moving plot threads at one time always advanced forward, a large cast that is very easy to remember, family stuff, drama, and lots and lots of action and more gore than any other comic out there. Yeah, there are some lulls, but over the course of 100 issues, that's going to happen. The good far outweighs the average.
In short, it's perfect.

I'd recommend picking up the first hardcover. If you like it ok, keep going. It gets better after that. If the story points and delivery in the first HC aren't to your liking, it just may not be your thing.
If you just want a sample of how the writing is in the series, go ahead and pick up #97. You'll be lost and the story that's in it probably won't interest you, but it would show you a bit of the writing style throughout the series.

Invincible is awesome. It takes about the first 6 or 7 issues to really get into the groove though, so if you start reading it and it seems a little off, don't give up on it. Trust me, you'll love it.carter3175 wrote:Dude let me ask you...Is Invincible that good? I've been hearing about this series and I have never read an issue.

Spent most of the evening reading old DC Blue Ribbon Digests with my daughter. She plowed through a Supergirl and a New Teen Titans and I had Superman versus Aliens, Superman versus More Aliens, and a Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen.
Every year they did a Best of DC: Year's Best Comics Stories that complied the best single issues of that year picked by editors. Those are amazing!

It still makes me smile seeing how many of the "big recs" are non Marvel/DC and non-superhero/non-traditional superhero.
Chew, Fables, TWD, BPRD, Saga, Invincible, ect...there's some excellent work these days.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
Some of my favorite all time books mentioned in the last few pages: Planetary, Invincible, Fables.
I've been reading some varied stuff lately.
I started reading Lone Wolf and cub, and was LOVING IT.... but then got to the end and realized I was missing 2 books in the 40s, I thought I had them all.....
Then I tried some Batman Elseworld stuff...... really not good. I also read Moriarty 1-9, the 1st issue was brilliant, #2 just a shade lower..... then a slow climb down to above average. I did like the Lazarus Tree, it's just that issue #1 was a great book.
I've read some other stuff (but I've forgotten), right now I'm re-reading what got me started on the entire "comic book thing" after Valiant, Astro City. I started with #1 and right now I'm on #4 of Vol 2. Unfortunately, it's not as good as I remember.
Still good, but not great.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
I started re-reading Astro City yesterday as well. I've only read the first 4 issues of the first series so far. It's still really good stuff. For its time, it's the best of it, but comics are just sooooo much better today than they were even 10-15 years ago.Elveen wrote:I've read some other stuff (but I've forgotten), right now I'm re-reading what got me started on the entire "comic book thing" after Valiant, Astro City. I quickly realized that this series is great when you consider it an anthology rather than one linear story, because it's not. Therefore, I'm not going to rush to read this all in one chunk. I'm going to read an issue here and there when I feel like it. It truly was awesome one and dones. The thought box heaviness in this series gets too much when you try to read issue after issue. Unlike Claremont's writing, the thought boxes here all have purpose, but still it bogs down the reading pace.
Another thing I realized is how much coloring has advanced in the last 10 years. Aside from Valiant, all coloring throughout the 90s was just terrible. A part of the reason that I couldn't get into Starman was because of the bland coloring. This book, as well as all other 90s books, is the same.
Something that I really loved about this book back in the day was the easy-to-remember names of the heroes and villains. Today, that's one of the things that I love about Invincible.
Yeah, Marvels came before it, but I will always remember Astro City for being the book that opened things up for the super hero genre.

Seriously to all of the discussion about Invincible that followed it really is that good, and does take a little time to really get going maybe even 2 trades worth but it's so worth it as Kirkman creates a huge universe where all of the characters are just amazing. You know how great incidental characters are when month after month people write in to see more of minor characters (Battlebeast!!!). Can't wait for Levy's return, seriously hoping he's the major issue for 100!

If he is [and that would be cool!], that might be the key to getting around this whole death of everybody story - Angstrom may go on a killing spree of character versions from other dimensions...ian_house wrote:Invincible #97 - Really awesome issue. The origin and reaction's for Bulletproof were utterly insane and amazing. It's just a shame everyone is going to die in 3 issues400yrs wrote:Deadpool #1 - 2/5.
Not sure if I'll get the next one.![]()

I think I've said this already, but just to address the 'read two trades worth' bit people are saying - Anybody trying out Invincible HAS to give it a chance up to #12 before deciding if they do/don't like it. HAS to. BIG BIG story arc climax there.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
Yep. That is the first full hardcover or the first three trades. Twelve or thirteen issues in all.
