Have you read the most recent issue, #118? It takes on a new dimension of disturbing.xodacia81 wrote:Toyland? I've read the first 3 issues. Where it could go? If it's leading where I think, given the "prophecy" and all...it's even more frightening than first assumed. The Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye vol. 2 #1-3. I should love this series, but somehow I don't. Nick Roche's art in #1 is horrible and Miline's attempt to mix his style with Roche looks awkward. I find this series slow and some of the Autobots are downright stupid especially Rodimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, Ratchet, Red Alert, Whirl, and Drift. The characters Swerve, Skids, Chromedome, Brainstorm, Tailgate, Cyclonus, and Rewind are far more interesting than any other time in the franchise's history. There are a lot of plots going on and it feels like you need a scorecard to keep up with all the plots. Roberts' attempt at humor feels forced and I found a lot of the jokes more groan worthy than funny. It's got potentional but kind of a let down. 3.5 out 5.
The Transformers: Robots In Disguise #1-4 Not having read any of the Transformers LAMs that John Barber and Andrew Griffith have done, so I really was really surprised by this series, showing how the Autobots, Decepticons, and NAILs (neutral Transformers) trying to rebuild Cybertron. It's shocking and strangely relevant to our world. Griffith's art is much better than Roche/Miline. A real different take on The Transformers that is shocking a 4 out of 5.

Epic Kill #2 - Another stupid fun read. I'm out, but may check it out later.
Trueblood #2 - The first series was terrible, terrible, terrible. This one written by Ann Nocenti and drawn by Michael Gaydos is not bad at all. The story actually has some ties to the current TV season.

Just read walking dead 100 and am very happy. This was a great issue and no spoilers but it was awesome.
Pull List: I only buy TPB's, HC's and Hellboy comics
Re: What comics are you reading now?
Just read Revival #1 from Image and really liked it. A different spin so far on zombie-esque storylines. Sort of Whiteout meets Walking Dead maybe.
This post has been carefully constructed so as to add absolutely nothing to any discussion or topic.
Re: What comics are you reading now?
I'm not getting any Marvel at all these days. Is Avengers vs X-Men good at all? I'm debating getting the HC collection when it comes out.

I'm not really sure how I felt about it. I think I'm just getting numb to it.
I really hope that Invincible goes in the other direction for issue #100.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
I got advance spoiled about it. I'm not going to read the book anymore. I think I was caught up to volume 15. I won't be reading 16 or 17. I'm out. There's a time and a place for certain types of "dark" stories and right now there's enough crap in my real life that I don't need this, and besides...Kirkman's become rather predictble with TWD. I haven't had a "shock" since Rick and crew destroyed the cannibals and that wasn't a shock of it happening as much as that they showed that much detail. The last "real" shock? Lori and the baby.400yrs wrote:caxiotis wrote:Just read walking dead 100 and am very happy. This was a great issue and no spoilers but it was awesome.

I'm starting to lean that way on the book as well. I could be out soon or switch over to HCs only or something. Instead of doing alot of character work, Kirkman is kind of focusing on the shock and as you say, there's only so many times you can kill a person to be shocking no matter how you do it. The character stuff in this book has been missing for a while. Spoiler through issue 70 or so -----> Probably since guys like Hershel and Dale were killed off is when the good character work stopped. As far as my last shocking moment, that would be when Carl was nearly raped.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
My current pile from this week, aside from Valiant [read & re-read
]
Revival #1 - looks good, I felt the same as 400yrs about the preview, but I'm glad I grabbed it.
Planetoid #2 - looks like a bit more interesting stuff happening than in #1 after a glance through, looking forward to reading it.
Transformers:Regeneration #81 - pretty excited to read, I gotta be honest. I love the old Marvel run - I grew up with it.
TWD #100 - read it... shocked by the 'main' event [not that it happened, but the brutality of it], I'm not sure how I feel about everything else yet...
Batman #11 - glad this story is wrapping up - depending on how good it is, I may drop the Bats after this one.
Swamp Thing #11
Just feel I should note that I didn't get Ressurection Man #11, or Dial H #3... I was intending on staying with RM until the end, but passed on it. I may get it if its still on the shelf next week. Dial H - I want to like it, but I am just not feeling the vibes from it. I'd rather spend that money on Valiant.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
I just finished Batman Versus The Incredible Hulk.
It was a little silly as these things tend to be, and there wasn't a lot of plot, but it was awesome to see the Bat and The Hulk go toe-to-to and later team up to fight the Joker. The Shaper of Worlds was the big Marvel villain of the story, but I haven't really read anything with him and he seemed a little corny.
The art by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez was absolutely breathtaking, though.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
The world outside my window has more than enough darkness and violence and I am in no way compelled to bring even more of it into my life via my entertainment. I still read some comics that I think push the line on what I am prepared to see, but unless it is really special and I feel like I get enough out of it to outweigh how uncomfortable I am with it, I simply don't read / watch it.xodacia81 wrote:There's a time and a place for certain types of "dark" stories and right now there's enough crap in my real life that I don't need this...
Our culture is SATURATED with violence. It is at the very bottom of our way of life and while I used to enjoy things that glamourised and aestheticised violence when I was younger, but I suppose in my old age I have become empathetic to almost a fault. I loathe seeing people hurt in real life and by extension, I'm not terribly comfortable seeing it in fiction.
We're shocked when we see people chop each other up and mail the parts, or people chew people's faces off, but that kind of thing is NOT abberant behaviour. It's just the next logical step in the culture of violence. Scary.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
Sadly too true. I mean, I enjoy some "dark" tv shows like Boardwalk Empire, The Borgias and Breaking Bad, and have been a fan of things like BSG and The Sopranos. I consider The Godfather( as a trilogy) to be the greatest film ever made, but there are indeed limits. What bothers me the most is this growing idea that "no limits" and "total freedom" has given rise to a lack of creativity and a turn in large part away from any sort of balance between "light and dark", if you know what I mean. When it comes to comics, about the darkest I like is what tends to happen in a given issue of Chew or Fables. Maybe Saga, but that's it. TWD 100? Nope. I'm far from squeemish, but that is just the last straw for me with that book. I know what Kirkman is doing with it and I can sort of respect his reasoning but at the same time it's a symptom, I think, of something else going on within the "entertainment" industry at large.Tim wrote:The world outside my window has more than enough darkness and violence and I am in no way compelled to bring even more of it into my life via my entertainment. Read the Image series Dancer by Edmondson. Gotta say that this is a good story. Don't want to say much about the story as anything would be a spoiler, buy worth trying out. Reminds me of Near Death, except I like this story better.

I re-read Revival #1 and I really like this alot. I've tried alot of new series lately and none have stuck much aside from Saga. I'm definitely adding Revival to my pull list.
I also picked up Planetoid #2 and Danger Club #2 and #3 to give those series another go, but I haven't read them yet.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
The Transformers: Robots in Disguise #1-4 All excellent reads and with solid storytelling and with solid and great artwork. I think while Barber is good he's needs to focus more on the new Transformer government being lead by Metalhawk (a netural TF), Bumblebee and Starscream and all the conflicts with the various factions within the Autobots, Decepticons, and Nails.
The Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye vol. 2 #1-5 I thought the first 3 issues were slightly dull and while 4 and 5 showed the potentional for the series and little rushed at the end. The artwork for #1 sucked I don't like Roche's designs and his style if I want a bad Pat Lee wanna be I re-read the DW issues. The art for #2 and #3 felt awkward because of Miline attempts to merge his style with Roche's which don't work IMHO. The artwork for #4 and #5 were better because Miline is getting into the grove of the series.

I felt this way as well and sold my run back around 70 something issue, wish I would have waited due to the current prices. I do think Kirkman should cap this as a finite number of issues as the stories as mentioned are getting predictable.

With the new Marvel relaunch in the fall, i think I am done with Marvel as well, except Uncanny X-Force, as I've been getting Uncanny for nearly 20 years.
