I assume it would be based on New, only because I imagine the movies would draw some new readers and it would make sense to have it be easy to get new people hooked if it was same/similar. Not that I know anything, but thats what I'd do.

Where are we going and why am I in this hand-basket?

Wow, that's more info than the original article had. So the rights for the movie actually defaulted back to VEI! Too cool if they are able to pull off financing and get it going via their own studio ala Marvel! It's been no secret that the long term plan for Valiant Entertainment has been to emulate the licensing and film success seen over the past decade by Marvel Comics. But today, the upstart publisher took a step closer to Marvel Studios territory than many would have predicted.
Variety reports that the rights to Valiant's "Harbinger" series -- which had been optioned by Paramount in 2008 -- have returned to the company, and Valiant is moving forward on the film without studio involvement. Apparently, a new screenplay draft has been commissioned by "Texas Chainsaw 3D" writer Stephen Susco with hopes of keeping director Brett Ratner involved. Variety notes that complications in the wake of a Fox/Warner Bros. lawsuit over "Watchmen" kept "Harbinger" from bowing with the "X-Men: The Last Stand" director at the helm.
The move is a proactive one from Valiant who have already been pressing forward with more broad licenses for their characters such as sponsoring the U.S. luge team for the 2014 Winter Olympics. And while the company is unlikely to finance an entire blockbuster action movie on its own, drafting a screenplay without studio involvement is the first step towards a more independent media slate a-la Marvel's building of Marvel Studios.
Whether this version of "Harbinger" will make it to the big screen is a question whose answer is far off. Stay tuned to CBR News for more on this story as it develops.

I thought it was rushed aswell, had to read some parts twice as it wasn't clear.GGSAE wrote:Who wrote that article? Seems like it was done in thirty seconds....Phoenix8008 wrote:Geekscape has the story posted today!

Much like my writing

Wasn't the last attempt scared off by David laPham, wanting creator rights? Not spreading rummors, just recall that somewhere. I also recall jim shooters response to the situation (which I found funny)
Good luck, would enjoy watching it on the big screen.

Re: Valiant moving forward with Harbinger movie!
A while back I posted an article I found interviewing Jason Kothari and it was definitely implied that they were looking to fund their own studio. Looks like that plan is moving in the right direction, following the pattern of a comics guy with Hollywood credentials tapped to write (JMS with Shadowman, now Susco).Phoenix8008 wrote:http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page ... e&id=43529

That's great news!
Re: Valiant moving forward with Harbinger movie!
This is cool but I find it hard to believe Valiant can do this on their own, let alone with less than one or multiple groups backing the film. Its make or bust for movies these days without major fiscal backing. I'll believe this when it goes into production.

Cool. Love Harbinger. However, I think Harbinger works better as a TV show than a movie.

The studio didn't move on it, so VEI brought in the writer of a movie that's been panned, and this great news to people?

Re: Valiant moving forward with Harbinger movie!
Shows commitment.
A good move? I have no idea - I just watch movies, have no idea how they get made.
If they write the script, and get backers - I am sure a movie production company will be far more interested. Finding financial backers for anything is the hard part. If valiant can do that for a movie, it's must be a big step forward.
As always, as fans, we get to chat about the possibilities, and maybe one day get invited to the movie release party
I mean get to watch it.

Re: Valiant moving forward with Harbinger movie!
From what I've understood, the studio couldn't move on it due to some lawsuit. So it's a good thing that the rights for the movie have reverted back to VEI so they can attempt to move forward with it in some other way. Also, when those rights were first optioned out and the movie was first talked about, there was nothing else known. That was like one of the first announcements by VEI after they won the lawsuit to have the Valiant IP's free and clear. Fast forward to now and we are looking at a growing universe of comics that will be 1 year old before long. We have new stories and a growing market share along with lots of praise from people across the industry for their product. I'd say that is in a better place than languishing at a studio that took the option before anything was known about it. As for the writer, well... I can't say. So the movie was panned by critics? I've never agreed with critics much anyway. And it was Texas Chainsaw Massacre I think? So it was a rewrite of an already told story. Maybe people just didn't want to hear that story again, or the way the director made the movie didn't appeal to people, or any of several other factors. I'll happily wait and see and hope for the best. When the status quo was nothing happening, I'd take any sign of forward movement as a positive.kjjohanson wrote:The studio didn't move on it, so VEI brought in the writer of a movie that's been panned, and this great news to people?

Re: Valiant moving forward with Harbinger movie!
Well said. Also, we often never know how many writers had their hands on a script. Many are brought in and never credited as such...including the directors themselves, who often make changes as they film. If anything, the director is most responsible for the movie's final product.Phoenix8008 wrote:From what I've understood, the studio couldn't move on it due to some lawsuit. It's funny because whenever an actor talks about one of those critically acclaimed films that I think are complete garbage, the first thing they say is what an "amazing script" it had. Meanwhile Joss Whedon and Sam Raime can't write for

I wonder, given what happened with Dark Key, if VEI isn't now relieved that Shooter bailed. Looks like they're way more than capable without him. I'd still like to see him return to contribute some stuff, however.jmatt wrote:I wonder if Jim Shooter still thinks abandoning VEI was a smart move.
As for the movie, I would love to see Valiant have the ability to have control over their own properties in movies. I think they've been doing an awesome job on the comic side and I would love to see just as much care put into the movies. It worked great with Marvel and I think it could work even better with characters I actually like to begin with. As for the Ratner hate, I don't get it. Last Stand was my favorite of the three X-Men movies.

I liked Last Stand, too--except for killing Cyclops, but that was as much about the actor's availability as anything from what I heard at the time.etos45 wrote:I wonder, given what happened with Dark Key, if VEI isn't now relieved that Shooter bailed. Besides, who's to say Ratner is even interested, or available anymore? It's been years since that was first announced. If anything, VEI may just be continuing to throw his name out as a well known director for PR benefit.
